This may be a noob question… I admit it, sometimes I can be a total noob… but I have to ask.

For my sanity’s sake, I am taking a break from the Season 2 storyline. I’ll get back to it… eventually. Currently I am just laying back and trying to earn a little gold. I don’t craft, so I am just harvesting, mining, logging, and farming materials and selling them. In the course of doing this, I’m also working on map completion.

My question:
Is total map completion just the PvE area’s, or does it also include PvP, and WvW area’s? Because I do not do PvP nor WvW and the last time I went into the Mist’s… to get my wolf companion, I was viciously attacked. All I wanted was the wolf, I didn’t want to fight. After 2 defeats, in which I did not even fight back and my pet was on heel – (to those who attacked me, I hope you found me satisfactorily challenging >_>,) – I finally shouted that I was there for the wolf only and that I had no intentions of fighting back if attacked. I got my wolf, but I really do not relish the thought of trying to get map completion in those area’s with so many viciously kill-happy people in the area’s. I know that is what those area’s are for, but seriously… pummel a non-violent person who doesn’t even defend themself… how is that either challenging or sporting? I mean, really? It’s like sicking my wolf on a mouse.

Seriously…

WvW is required for map completion.

Map completion does require WvW.

Yes, you will be attacked. The enemy thinks you’re a roamer or a scout for your server. Or you died and are running back to the zerg. They also can’t hear anything you say. You got lucky when you got your wolf.

But! It’s not as hard as you think.

Just run to what you have. Don’t go deep into enemy territory if you don’t feel comfortable doing it. Goodness knows I didn’t.

My strategy for dealing with me being in an environment I wasn’t too comfortable in was:

Spend 30 minutes in WvW or however long it takes to get 1% of the map complete (just that individual map) a day. Whichever comes first. 1% isn’t a lot.

My only caveat was that until I had Stonemist Castle, I had to periodically check to see if my server held it. It tends to flip often so if your server has it, get everything in it. You may already even have 1% due to getting your wolf. And you’ll have all the waypoints just by hopping into the map.

Just to clarify Seera’s good advice (since you haven’t done WvW before), you don’t have to focus on getting all of a given area at one time because we randomly get assigned a borderlands on a weekly basis. So if you’re red one week, focus on getting everything that’s easily accessible in the areas available to the red world. About 90% of the time you’ll be able to run to any tower or camp that your world has claimed without any problems. It may take a couple of months (or less, if your luck is good) to get all the areas, but you will eventually get them all.

Do work on it in case the following doesn’t pan out, but there is speculation just now that maybe, just maybe, WvW will be removed from the completion requirements in HoT. I think it’s based on shots of the UI in the HoT demo.

The thing that always irked me is that the Borderlands are all the exact same map. Having to do all three seems stupid. Like everyone said, it may take some cycles, but your server will eventually be the color you need and will hold SMC and you’ll be able to get it done.

This should help you.

Guide for WvW map completion

Method 1: (only for active servers)
actively follow the commander around the map as they take things

Method 2: (any server)
transfer to an active server and follow method 1

Method 3: (most popular method for lower tier servers)
Run to objectives on reset night to get exploration quickly (before your server loses things). WvW matchup resets 1 hour and ~5 minutes after the daily reset on Friday night (currently 5:05 PM PST for NA servers)
When the matchup resets, your server has a claim over all the keeps and towers in their Borderland and the keep and 4 towers for your corner in Eternal Battlegrounds.

When reset occurs go to your BL and run like crazy (bring swiftness!) to the 2 souternmost keeps (Bay and Hills) get all the POIs and vistas there. Then move north from them visiting towers, camps, and the garrison. You should have the 3 keeps and all the towers and camps north of Bay/Hills (dont worry if it takes more than 1 week). If your server still has stuff in EB, then go there and pick up your keep, 4 towers and the 2 camps on your side (will likely need more than one week for this and BL). to get the stuff in the south, you have to wait until your color is NOT the same as the BL (go to BLs that are “not your server name borderlands”)(unless you are really fast and can get to that southernmost tower before the enemy gets it). You will need 4 friends. You can activate the commander NPC (seigerazor/siegecrusher) if he is there. He will help you take the tower closest to your spawn. You can also take the 2 camps nearest to your spawn and get the south skill point/vistas.

Stonemist Castle will probably be your biggest issue if your world never takes it. The best way i can see to do it is to follow an enemy zerg into it (be careful they will see you as an easy target). Stealth is your best friend (if youre a mes or thief just equip your stealths and carefully fun around the perimiter picking up the POIs, otherwise bring a freind who can stealth you). You have to follow your enemy through the inner gate as well in order to get the skill point (this should be done after most of them leave).

Tips:
*Be patient, this is a PvP map and it might take some time to do if your server has 0 presence
*Always avoid enemies when you can. Anyone that sees you will tell their 50 “freinds” in map chat and generally try to engage you
*Stealth, speed boosts, and even invulnerability skills are very helpful
*non-peak times can also be helpful if you are against servers where people actually get some sleep

Good Luck with your exploration. If you mention what server you are on, you might find someone here that will help you as well.

Also dont wait until the end to do WvW map completion! it will take more than a few weeks!! You are early enough in your completion that it wont affect you as much, but some people wait on WvW until it is the last thing and are critically annoyed about it.

You stating you’re in the wvw for a wolf pet was pointless. You didn’t have to say that in map chat, just run to that area and take it. I’ve done it couple of times on my ranger, then again I only leveled my ranger in wvw.
Do exactly what Gobble said, just follow the commander around on an active server and you’ll most likely get everything in EB. WvW map completion is simple, and easy. The only hard part that comes with it is that you could get killed and depending on your server they may shame you for just being in wvw for MC. Do not let them know you’re only there for map completion. Just ask if they’ll be able to take the POI.
I hate PVE map completion as some of the hearts are boring and tedious.
Also be inconspicuous, if you go into a tower and you see siege just hop on them make it look like you’re refreshing them.

Actually, my being in WvW for the wolf WAS THE POINT for my having been there in that instance. So it wasn’t pointless to say that. You need to pay a little more attention to what you are reading. I WAS trying to ‘just’ run to that area and take it, but I was attacked on my first 2 attempts. I shouted, and because the third time I was left alone, I assumed my shout was seen by the enemy players. I know nothing about WvW or PvP because I have no interest in them, therefore, never bothered with learning any of it. That includes who can and cannot see what I say in chat. Someone, higher up in this thread, informed me already that my shout would have no effect on enemy players. So my conclusion is this: In this instance, I did not fight back and my pet was on heel, so the enemy players figured it out on their own and left me alone the third time. I know they saw me, because I could see them, even though I gave as wide a berth around their camp as I could. I got my wolf and promptly left WvW. But I still need to go back for map completion and already said I was going to do it the way that was suggested above, by another poster.

Naw, they won’t leave you alone. You are a loot bag and a possible spy, even if you are running around transformed by a tonic and can’t fight back.

Assume everyone will kill you. One thing you can do is put a waypoint in chat then turn chat off so it stays there. Then if you see an enemy coming toward you, you can waypoint out from chat without having to open up the map and look.

If you have any guildies or friends on, see if they need the areas also. You are more likely to be attacked if you are solo.

The other teams won’t see what you’re saying in chat, even in Say chat. You’d have to whisper an enemy player for them to know what you’re saying.

And yes, this will happen sometimes. It can be frustrating, but if you’re careful you can usually avoid getting jumped. And as others have suggested, joining up with your server’s groups on busy nights (especially on wvw reset nights) would probably be a good way to get a bunch of completion done.

Punkit Im talking about you getting attacked in map chat for saying all you wanted was the wolf pet. You didn’t have to say that in map chat at all, that attack could have been avoided if you just kept to yourself.

Saying anything at all to the enemy in say chat is pointless. You could insult the other team in say chat until your fingers fall off. The enemy will not see what you are typing at all. The only ones who see it are the ones on your side.

In WvW there is no talking to the entire enemy army at once. You have to WHISPER to an enemy for them to see it.

I’ll apologize now, because I had a great big LMBO when I read this…. at your expense.
You still haven’t paid attention to what I said.

Let me see if I can simplify:

-I went into WvW.
-I did NOT say anything in any kind of chat whatsoever.
-I was making my way to wolf area.
-I got attacked and defeated. (Neither I nor my pet fought back)
-I made a second attempt.
-I got attacked and defeated. (Neither I nor my pet fought back)
-Before my THIRD attempt, I shouted. (did not know at that time that enemy players could not see anything I say)
-Made my way to wolf area WITHOUT getting attacked.
-Got my wolf.
-Left WvW.

After learning on here that enemy player’s cannot see my chat, I concluded that they figured out on their own what I was doing and left me alone the third time.

Understand now?

I have no doubt that going in for map completion is going to be a whole different story.

Exactly! No verbal abuse.

No one, in-game, has ever spoken to me in an ill tone. Probably because I don’t do PvP or WvW, which I am pretty sure I’d suck at. >.<
