Megaservers, TC, and Capital Cities

I’d like to start by saying that I appreciate the idea behind the megaservers. I look forward to doing Tequatl again and to trying to kill the Great Jungle Wurm for the first time. Seeing more people out and about in the world will allow us to do more small-scale group events.

However, I am concerned about the implementation of the megaservers in capital cities. I come from Tarnished Coast, one of the unofficial RP servers. I and most of my RP friends are very concerned about being separated from other RPers and about being trolled while we are in-character.

I don’t, however, think this is an RP-specific concern. Many people are very attached to their home servers, particularly for but not restricted to their WvW prowess. In addition, it was nice to go to places like The Grove or the Black Citadel as a break from Lion’s Arch or Gendarran Fields, where map chat and emote spam is sometimes overwhelming. It’s also nice to be able to do crafting without having to wait on long load times or wade through seas of blue text names.

Keeping the capital cities server-specific will keep the relative “tranquility” (while leaving Gendarran and other zones that the Living Story might make popular with the bustling “city” feel).

In my server’s case (Piken, too, I believe is an unofficial server, and there may be more — apologies if I’m missing some), it will segregate roleplayers from non-roleplayers. While Tarnished Coast has many people who do not RP, there are not (in my experience) as many trolls as one might expect; non-RPers on TCstill understand that if they wander into Divinity’s Reach, for instance, they’ll go through IC emote spam. If we leave home cities server-specific, it will go a long way to keeping RPer and non-RPers apart — and if I had to guess, I would say non-RPers don’t feel like putting up with in-character emote spam. It would be beneficial for both parties.

I can’t speak for all RPers, but my opinion is this. As an RPer, I don’t expect special treatment. I don’t need official sanctioning or extra consideration when reporting harassment. All I want is an opportunity to RP with people — new people who I’ve never met before, who joined Tarnished Coast because they want the same. Taking megaservers out of capital cities would accomplish this without interfering with what I feel the true drive of the megaservers is trying to accomplish — increased player activity out in the open world. Please consider this as you go forward in the next couple weeks.

Edited to add: At the time of this posting, Rata Sum, The Grove, and The Black Citadel are on megaservers, while Hoelbrak and Divinity’s Reach are not.

Agreed.

There’s really little reason to implement megaservers in cities anyway. The largest purpose of the megaservers is more people to do events and quests and such with, but cities are devoid of any of that anyway.

Of course I agree, since none of the suggestions from RPers were actually taken into consideration from the devs, at the very least they could disable megaservers for cities until they figure something out.

Well, according to the patch notes, they haven’t enabled any map (including cities) except for the PvP Lobby for MegaServer use.

So, perhaps, they are considering alternatives. =)

I agree, on a different grounds, that being that so many people swarmed around vendors, crafting stations, etc causes serious lag for those of us with slower graphics cards. Even with characters detail and numbers at the lowest settings its causing me serious frame loss. Like 50% reduction.

This is perfectly reasonable, and it’s something I had wanted to emphasize. Yes, I am an RPer, and yes, it is my primary reason for playing this game. But non-RPers stand to benefit greatly from what I’ve suggested too.

I do hope you are correct! Unfortunately, it has definitely been implemented in my game; Rata Sum and Black Citadel are packed with guilds I have never seen before.

Perhaps it was an oversight. Here’s hoping. X)

I actually lack of things to say at this moment, if the cities were in fact merged then.. well, I am very disappointed…

Sadly no. They did implement the megaserver into cities as when asking map chat I got many responses such as FA and Crystal Desert. I do hope this post gets the attention it deserves both as an RPer and nonRPer. There are certain feels to the cities that are just too much when you find it populated so much more so than before.

Megaserver for cities is unnecessary. People want this for open world maps which have become ghost towns. We need someplace where it can just be our own server. No, not just WvW.

Agreed to all of the above. Megaservers are not needed in capital cities. All this does is split playerbases apart, not merge them together as intended.
