I’m just returning to the game and trying to decide what to play. If I remember correctly, melee used to have a much harder time in dungeons and higher levels than ranged. Is this still true? Thanks!

depends on what you mean by tough, but in general melee have to be more alert and focused then ranged. Generally ranged is a lot safer, unless the mob or boss is made of reflects.

Meanwhile, there are a lot of topics about how warriors focusing on melee are more powerful than everything else in the game…

Any boss can be hurt by a ranged weapon, but it’s very tough to kill bosses like The Shatterer or Gigantic Lupicus with a melee weapon. The fact that the former boss’s hitbox moves erratically makes it tough for melee to land all their hits. With the latter boss, the extreme aoe damage and single target ranged attacks it does are so devastating, you may not have time to get out of the way as a melee.

I wonder if Skritt would make good pets…

Obviously can’t comprehend the many hours of practice it takes to successfully solo a boss like Lupicus.

Going Melee may be a bit more difficult, but it also makes way more fun than standing on 1.500 range and just go pew pew (at least for me it does). You just have to get used to dodging the right attacks and positioning yourself.

EDIT: to the guys referring to the warrior who soloed lupi. This is way more difficult than you might think, try it yourselves

I would love to see if any other classes can do it with even double amount of practice.

Well, overall I think melee is a lot better for pve but not very good for pvp.

Just like how condi damage > direct damage in pvp and vice versa for pve.

this is only not as true because of how AI and Player targiting work in other MMO’s, more often than not if your tank is pulling agro right in other MMO’s its not hard to stay out of the way as a Melee DPS in other game’s

I play d/d ele, so that’s kind of melee. In my experience, it’s not really too much more difficult. Of course it’s safer with ranged, but once you learn to move around and run through enemies to avoid their attacks, you may find yourself better off since melee tends to hit harder. Plus it’s just a lot more fun.

It only really is if you go glass cannon melee. Balance some vit/toughness and learn how to use your defensive stills properly. It’s rather difficult in high lvl fractals though to melee some bosses.

Is there any reason you can’t go melee for open-world PVE, then switch to ranged for dungeons?

it’s so easy with full melee party or melee and support behind..
I have hard time only when I have 4 idiots players standing behind me but shooting and doing nothing else -_-. Oftentimes i just switch to full berserker+rifle(warrior) and see them grabbing aggro from me and pathetically falling flat.

It just depends on HOW you melee really. I couldn’t stand it as a Thief, but have really been enjoying it as a Necro! I’m usually Dagger/Focus, but sometimes switch to Dagger/Dagger and just stay in melee while using wells. It’s awesome watching a Thief get teared up in melee range, and feeling like you’re essentially a crazy wizard wearing a bath robe with a dagger and going “No no no…you don’t know how to use Daggers!!!”

The content isn’t easy with melee weapons, its easy with warriors and guardians because their warriors and guardians, and both classes usually still switch to easy range mode for bosses / hard enemies.

I have played through all PvE areas with my Thief, all as melee (dagger dagger) and have performed, survived and killed mobs better with my daggers than with pistols or shortbow. It’s all about what fits your playstyle. I have always found melee a more comfortable environment to play in, so I tend to build for melee and perform better there. That said, I do switch to ranged against certain bosses sometimes, but for the most part I swap between ranged and melee during a boss fight anyway, so I can stack bleeds-a-plenty on them then back off to safety while my ini recharges.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

in most situations it is harder. there’s some bosses with long range but overall as ranged you just stand at the back and shoot.

much easier and not nearly so much fun.

Playing a warrior in WoW was a sad experience, especially compared to an ice mage for example, at least when I stopped playing (other melee classes were way better though).
