Is there anyone out there besides me that find the mentor title in chat annoying? Lately some mentors are acting like know it alls, and I have been blocking them. Wish that the title could be removed from chat.

I dunno. I tend to not like jerks regardless of whatever prefix/suffix they’re sporting.

Though I think mentor/tag abuse could be a thing that is punished, and perhaps suspended.

The tag doesn’t seem to have lived up to its name but other than that how is it any worse than the usual stuff in chat?

I like it ‘cause when I say “x on my tag” people know to look for a mentor tag – I’d actually like if the commander tag got chat titles as well: Green Commander, Blue Commander, Red Commander, etc, so on a map with 6 tags I don’t have to sit there in the map screen trying to figure who’s who.

I wish the mentor tag was removed altogether. Most people just shamelessly abuse it to draw attention to themselves without having to obtain a proper commander tag. Since HoT release I’ve seen maybe 2 people, who used the tag the intended way and actually tried to help/mentor people. But in 99% of the cases they just use it as a cheap substitute of an actual tag.

Not sure how you can believe Anet thought everyone who got it would be a mentor. It’s called a mentor tag, but that’s just a label. You had to know Anet thought it would be used as a cheap commander tag.

In most cases that’s the only practical way to use it.

What I’d consider actual mentoring – teaching someone how to play – involves a lot of talking to each other, which doesn’t require a portable map marker (which is all a commander/mentor tag is) and does require a dedicated chat channel, so either forming a party or whispering. And if you form a party you can see where each other are anyway.

A mentor tag, like a commander tag, is for making a location. I’ve used it for things like when the ley lines events were new I’d find one, turn the tag on and then say “ley line event on my tag”, or if someone asks where the entrance to a jumping puzzle is I’ll go there and turn the tag on, then guide them to the exact spot because it’s quicker and easier than trying to describe it.

I realise some people think I should have to buy a commander tag to be allowed to do that, but even when it only cost 100g it was more than I felt it was worth for something I use for about 30 seconds at a time once a week or so.

Definately! Personally I find it quicker to hold down shift and click on the nearest WP but whatever people can type faster.

It gets used for the TD meta and DS as well.

Are training people in the event or organizing it? If they are not just using it for a vanity tag, that and other bosses are a good use for a commander tag in PVE.

One of the things I like about Second Life: everyone shows up as a dot on the map. Want to know where the big event is? Look for where the dots are clustered.

I tried using the mentor tag the way it’s supposed to be used. But everyone just assumes it’s a commander tag and starts following me for no reason or ask why I’m not leading events.

I like the concept of a mentoring system, but the implementation is less than ideal.

Yes, I would like to see a mentor system too. If a new person (or someone new to the event) sees an indication of a mentor that person should be both approachable and knowledgeable (or at least know how to find out the information they need).

It certainly needs a rework. When I get on a low-level map (and I will be there longer than it takes me to do a daily) I will act like a mentor: greet new people in /map, give tips I wish I knew starting out, party up with new people who are completely lost. From the reactions I get in map chat from knowitalls I am guessing that is unusual.
