[Merged]1year post launch. How Anet feel on Trinity?
Trinity sucks dude. You’ll find no sympathy here.

well thats 1 person. anybody else share this view, or disagree with it?
if so, explain how your view of the trinity changed 1 year after experiencing what Anet’s idea of the trinity-less system?
Now… the part which ANet partially have succeeded,
is to make bosses in dungeons that doesn’t require
the trinity setup …or at least add an aggro management
system, in such away we can more control who the boss attacks.
As someone that has spent 10+ years in trinity based MMORPGs, I have to agree with Chopps. Besides, there is no real reason to have it in this game, given the mechanics.

But what you’re missing is the combat beyond trinity. Trinity is limiting. In gw2, you support each other through unique profession buffs as well as boons like regeneration, might, fury, or conditions on the enemy like vulnerability, immobilize, or chill. This requires active teamplay via combo fields and finishers.
In gw2, there is a trinity in a way: damage / support / control. And that’s how you play. It’s more active, more intelligent, and more fun.
Antiquated system best left in old school MMOs.
Until bosses are improved so that builds besides berserker are viable, the Trinity still rules all. The Trinity is the best system at the moment, and Anet is proving that with their non-trinity system. When conditions/bunker/support builds become viable in PvE, only then will Anet’s combat system truly shine. As it stands now though, the combat system is the worst combat I’ve seen in a very long time.
One of two things will happen if Anet ever decides to do something about this.
1.) Anet will improve bosses so that berserkers alone cannot defeat it. They need support/bunker/condition builds in the group.
2.) Anet will add the trinity. (This is a lot less likely). (.0000008% chance less likely).
It’s just a matter of when Anet will improve the bosses, because time is ticking, and people that don’t use berserker gear are leaving or have already left.

I bet you can beat any boss in this game with five naked rangers with bears and longbows so long as you know what you’re doing. Any build is viable—just not for speed runs. Still, I bet 5 naked [rT] or [DnT] rangers could beat many bosses faster than many newcomer PUGs. They already did that with 5 naked rangers on arah path 4. Basically everything is viable.

I have never used full berzerker and never will and i am still here with nearly 10k of AP. Content doesn’t need to be done by zerkers only. I also know a large amount of people who are not using zerker gear and are not leaving. Your speculating too much. Guardians are used in dungeon runs as support (which is why they are brought not cause of their damage). Mesmers are brought in for support. All classes can control.
GW2 Trinity is: DPS/Control/Support. All classes are capable of doing all of these no matter what armour they are using. Warriors in those zerker runs are used for DPS. Guardians are used for Control and Support. Mesmers as well. This makes for a balanced team. Is it the only combination? No it is not but it is the one with the highest DPS via theory crafting (which doesn’t always make it so in practice). I have had mixed groups with my guild that achieved times on par with top zerker groups.

This here is my opinion too.
While I’m playing FF14: A Realm Reborn on the side and getting the Trinity there, it’s only reminding me why the hell I hate it. Tank screws up? The party wipes. The healer screws up? Party wipes. If DPS doesn’t kill things fast enough? The party wipes. If any ONE person screws up or doesn’t have the equipment or has min/max’d like they’re supposed to, it’s all over for the party. This is one problem I have with the system.
Second problem is the queue times for dungeons…30+ minutes to get into any single dungeon or instance with a party. While it’s instant for tanks and takes a few for healers, it’s still bad because it takes a while for the DPS, which 70%+ players play. That’s a huge inconvenience. Whereas here I can get a PUG dungeon party in less than 5 minutes and just go straight through the dungeon.

Incorrect, you need other profession buffs for max DPS. You are also speculating too much about some things. War/war/war/mes/guard is folklore advanced by strife, someone who not only never completely solved gw2 (that would happen months later), he also quit the game.
No doubt that ArenaNet needs to change encounters and bosses to better interact with the current system. That said, even the mention of implementing the Unholy Trinity would certainly mean the departure of this player.

Actually i never stated what was going to be in the party you assumed that. I only brought up 3 classes and never stated what I use. Your also stating that 1 person who determined your point of war/war/war/guard/mes party then quit the game which you would also be wrong cause more than one person has come to the same conclusion, and some before others. Your speculating far to much and assuming too much. Shall I point out all of what your assuming? Cause it is an awfully long list, and I just pointed out 4 assumptions you have made.
I been here since the very start of the game and played almost every day so I seen and read a lot of things. Hell I even knew about the first guy to lvl80 and how he used crafting to do it which then was quickly realized that crafting was the fastest way to level your character.

Yeah trinity sucks dude. Since you asked.
Next time you feel like a trinity group just sit in Lion’s Arch for half an hour first, reminding yourself what it’s like to be waiting for a healer.
I think it’s easy to miss the one vital point.
The trinity started out a very long time ago, so people have had the time to create stuff with the trinity. And it wasn’t just a handful of devs.
So when the trinity started, encounters were very very simple. Everything was essentially tank and spank. And as the trinity became more entrenched, more and more variety was added.
The trinity has had years to evolve. Literally years. And since everyone was doing it, it evolved faster.
I think it’s premature to expect a non-trinity system to be fully fleshed out in a year or two. So far, this game has given me more enjoyable fights than any trinity game I"ve played. I’ll never miss waiting for a tank or healer, and more importantly, I’ll never have to jump on my healer because my guildies are pestering me to play a character I’d rather not play.
But the trinity goes far beyond limiting players. The trinity also limits developer creativity. It hampers the progress of boss encounters.
It’s like the first games that come out for new consoles aren’t usually as good or polished as the ones that come out later. It takes time to learn to use a new resource. The trinity is one of the major limiting factors in most older MMOs. It should stay there.
Trinity sucks dude. You’ll find no sympathy here.

I think that depends on the game to some extent, back in DCUO (which has the trinity…actually it has more than that with tank/dps/heal/energy batter (I mean controller) was doing a raid and half the team wiped within 2 minutes of the final boss…..still won with 1 tank, 1 controller (me), 2 healers….IT WAS JUST THE MOST LONG AND PAINFUL BATTLE.
But fair point on things getting significantly more difficult for everyone else when someone messes up in trinity based games. At least here for the most part you can solo without any significant problems if you know what you’re doing
And spent hours again looking for monk? No way!
I think they did a pretty good job with breaking the trinity mold. Sure some encounters could use work but considering this is the first game to break the mold in a very long time there are gonna be some kinks that need worked out . I hope more games ditch the trinity in the future to be honest. It’s a passe model and the more games break the mold the better trinityless games will get .

Yep, exactly the point.
Trinity is for hardcore grouping. Non-trinity is for the casual, soloing gamer (where everyone is DPS).
Both models are fine. But GW2 is getting the reputation of how to do non-Trinity wrong. When EQN was announced as non-Trinity the devs had to reassure people it would not be like GW2.
Still, I think for any sort of depth in gameplay something like the Trinity is needed. I’m skeptical it can be done though in a game where everyone is DPS.
What does trinity mean? I keep hearing about this but have no clue what it means.
Oh wait does it mean grouping? A class group system? I miss it and so far dislike this about GW2. But I’m a new player and often bored inside GW2 with no feel or purpose.

DPS over everything else. Personally I find it extremely shallow.
PvE requires no healing and close to no support, only massive DPS.
I’d love to see content that actually makes it rewarding to play as a full cleric guardian, support ele, ranger or engineer, which doesn’t doesn’t slow down your team.
I miss risk, I miss failing, I miss team work, I miss coordination.
I hate – 1 1 1 1 1 1 . Combat may be more active but sure as hell is not anything special.

Healer/Tank/DPS
Healers heal everybody, tanks keep all the enemy’s aggro, DPS just kills the enemies.
That’s the trinity.

Right…..try taking that into a Teqatl fight see where it gets you.
Stack next to foot, spam DPS and occasional heal, zone res.
Real challenge right there.
I noticed a lot of people in GW2 have all the old shcool MMO definitions wrong. I met a really nice young guy who was helping me in GW2 by taking time to show me around and explain the system and kept using terms like CONTROL and UTILITY and it took me awhile that what he considers utility and control is different than what me and my old school MMO players meant by it. I tried to explain to him that I understood what all he meant though and explain that he is using utility in place of healing or support and control was not real control as he was referring to it as dodge and locking down a player or NPC in a fight. He was super excited about GW2 and assumed all other MMOs did not have these things and I can only guess he got his info from GW2 fanboys because he never played any other MMOs. I tried to assure him these things in GW2 are nothing new and that you have all these features minus the dodge in other MMOs and even more skill branching and customization. I don’t think he got it though. SO anyways I guess my point is that when Fanboys skew others perspective then it does not help them.

Sure you can do that…but you’re not winning the fight doing that. The fight is won by the people on the guns and the people protecting the people on the guns. Not that the DPS isn’t important in that fight, but it’s only one aspect of it.
Much like if you were DPSing in any game, you wouldn’t think necessarily about what the tank and healer are doing…but it doesn’t mean they’re not doing it.
This is what I know about the trinity:
tanks: spam taunt skills, put something heavy on the key mapped to that skill
healers: spam heal skills, put something heavy on the key mapped to that skill
dps; dps rotation
what do people like it so much?
If Tequati was instanced and had better rewards you’d see people regularly farming him effortlessly with no TS. That’s how easy he is.
I won him 3 times out of 4 during the release week, but due to awful rewards I lost all desire to play this event.

…Actually requires you to know your role?
…Whole team relies on you?
…If you fail, everyone fails?
Challenge? Coordination? Team work?
If UWsc was so easy as people claim it to be – why did exp teams require you to show Stones to enter? Why did most random pug teams fail? Why were pug teams slow?
I loved the trinity in other games myself. But I don`t think you can really blame its system more then you can blame the devs from past games limiting the way it was handled. Nobody wanted to play a healer class because only a certain kind of person enjoys that style of play and they were few and far between. They could have made the healer class more fun to play so it would appeal to more people but most games never did. So I don`t think the trinity was bad idea but the devs in past games never made you want to play a healer or a tank. And the investment required to be a good one limited what you could do outside your main role a lot.
Runes of magic had a really nice cross class system. I was a knight cleric and I could switch my primary to either to get the benefits of the class. I could go knight/cleric and tank in dungeons or I could go cleric/knight and main heal in dungeons. Each primary had its own gear set that was saved so you didn’t have to carry extra gear or juggle it around. Was probably one the best class systems in any game I ever played. They could have done something simaler here or had certain trait lines more dedicated to certain roles then they do now.
I do know from experience that the every man for himself type games do give the instant satisfaction faster then the trinity based games. But in the longrun the trinity type games rewards feel more gratifying.

you don’t have to have trinity to have those
My objection to the trinity, and I’ve said this before, is how artificial it is. How exciting would Lord of the Rings been if anyone only ever attacked Boromir while Gandalf healed him. I’m thinking not very. It’s a completely artificial construct that kills the drama in games. It adds a completely different game-like challenge, but for immersion or story telling, or just feeling like you’re actually part of an epic battle, it fails for me personally.
The idea that some super powerful megafoe is too stupid to attack the healer and he’s allowing himself to be taunted so he ignores everything but one guy just doesn’t feel right to me.
HA was intense with Infuse RC/Infuse Monks reuired 1/4 , 1/2 second reaction time.
It required good reflexes, mana management, weapon switching etc, it sure as hell wasn’t just standing in one place casting 2-3 heal skills again and again.
Im for or against trinity, there should be an evolution, sadly GW2 didn’t create one.
Holy Trinity was replaced with holy Zerging/DPS spam, occasional dodge and #5.

Common misconception. That’s what dps is in other trinity-based games. Tank stands in front and takes damage, healer stands behind and heals damage, dps just do their dps rotation and move out of damage.
Here you have damage mitigation and healing abilities as well as straight dps. The interactive nature of the combat makes it significantly more interesting, I can blast a water field laid by another person for a group AOE heal or cast a finisher through someone else’s fire field for a host of different effects depending on the combos.
Never going back to boring trinity games.

well, this we can agree on. Challenging content has been asked for but they are reluctant to make them, due to the amount of crying they get every time they make something that requires more than 11111.

No. Healer. Healers needed good reflexes otherwise you were spiked to death in less than 1 second. I enjoyed that kind of a gameplay.
The whole team depended on me.
GW2? 5 random pugs, doesn’t matter what profession, skill level, sure it may take a bit more time, few deaths but you still can finish everything, no risk, no failure, no wipe, no restart.
(edited by Nick.6972)
I wouldn’t even call Guild Wars 1 a trinity game...certainly not in PvE anyway. In all my years in Guild Wars 1 PvE, I cant’ remember ever using a tank. There’s certainly no taunt mechanic or any way to guarantee that you hold aggro.
Just about the only true tanking experience I can remember from Guild Wars 1 (at least tanking as people refer to it from other games) is a dual farm of the first groups in FoW, the shadow army.
We’d have a permasin go in and grab aggro and they stay alive, while an ele used AOE spells like meteorstorm back to back (didn’t draw aggro because they targeted an area not a foe), until all the shadow guys were dead. It was a way to farm obby shards back in the day, and though it was slowish, it worked.
Beyond that, I don’t consider Guild Wars 1 a trinity game at all.

I’m not sure I’ve read my other reply to your edit but again, that is an (imo) unfortunate consequence to making this game friendly to casual players
People get the concept of “holy trinity” and actual enemy mechanics crossed up and confused.
“Holy Trinity” isn’t what makes an enemy “dumb”, bad design does.
I like the idea of people not having to be locked into a responsibility.
What I don’t like is the bad enemy design that doesn’t challenge people to do anything other than dps. What purpose does snaring and slowing an enemy serve in GW2? What purpose does healing serve, when you can just get downed and dps yourself back to life with rally?
When it comes to actual combat, there is no teamwork involved outside of the shoehorned combo mechanic and no real reason to have any other build but one that increases damage and vitality.
I’d like to see people have a need to snare and slow, a reason for people to heal, and a reason for people to pull and hold agro against enemies. GW2 is way too dps focused.
No specific love for the trinity here. However, the game lacks meaningful combat roles. I think this is a problem given that humans generally approach objectives, in groups, through roles.
I guess I’m confused on what trinity actually is if GW2 doesn’t have it.
what would a GW2 with trinity look like?
From what I gather:
berserker’s or assassin’s would literally die from a grub in 1 hit, but kill a champ in under a min
soldier’s or sentinel’s would be able to survive one of those flowers exploding in SAB tribulation
cleric’s or giver’s or winter would be able to fully heal themselves or another player every 5 seconds.
like the major difference is that we have a base 700 or so of every stat, and gear can’t even double that number but just increase a few of them by a bit.
dodge, in particular, kinda throws kinks into that distribution.

Try out wvw sometime for you Trinity supports, Much more trinity in there then there ever will be in PvE.
Melee Train (Front Line): Tank and Aggro (Warr, Guard, Specialized Necro)
Back Line: DPS/Support (Eles, Necro, Engi)
Disruptor: Cause Chaos in back line (1-2 Thief/Ranger)
Also, I find PvP to be more enjoyable and challenging as all boss and dungeon mechanics can be memorized and learned. Making it extremely easy and simple. PvP (Large and Small Scale) You never know whats coming at you so it actually requires skill within your class and yourself.

Agro? Agro players? Come on, your opponents can’t be that bad.
Regardless of that, transfer to higher tier server and watch them all merge into one big blob, or watch the blob steamrolling over you.
The trinity is for noobs who can’t adapt to this style.

I think it is people who try to play the game in the trinity style who tend to claim that the trinity is good or needed; people who try to use tactics that work in a game that supports the trinity. I am thinking, for example, speed runs of any kind. But if you slow down, be more thoughtful of how you approach an encounter, then the dps/control/support scheme we have works very well. But if you have the farmer mentality and try to speed clear stuff, then it doesn’t work.
I enjoyed the trinity system when I played WoW, though I was a healer. I don’t have an issue with Anet trying out a different combat system with GW2, , but I feel it’s come short of what it was intended to be. Control roles feel very weak in PvE because of how short CC is and because just about every single boss has Defiance. Support feels okay if you’ve got enough tools to use (boon applications, combo fields, healing) but I don’t know if it’s as efficient as straight up DPSing things to kill them faster.

to be fair all Frodo did was fall down followed by Sam saying “mr Frodo !” the entire trilogy . As for Boromir well…he could of used a heal seeing as hes the only one who DIED.
