Mesmer or Warrior - semi new player
Mesmer
I never get these “what should I play?” threads. It’s totally subjective.
Play the one you personally enjoy more….or play them all.
Good luck either way.
Short answer – roll both.
Long answer – it really comes down to what you want to be.
As a Warrior, your primary goal (in PvE) is dps. You are a train of damage and durability, but your support capabilities aren’t the best. Warriors have the highest weapon variety, though PvE meta tends to highlight only a few of these – and sword really isn’t one of them. As far as I’m aware, you’ll be a powerful force in most dungeons, but somewhat lacking in high end Fracs (I could be wrong there).
As a Mesmer, you serve a rather similar role to the Guardian (in dungeons). High dps coupled with reflects and/or stability and/or condition removal. Time Warp is an incredible elite skill for dungeons that turns bosses into paste. Trouble is, meta builds for the Mesmer are pretty one-dimensional in PvE (though they get a good bit more variety in PvP). Fortunately for you, their meta dungeon set is also Sword/Sword.
Mesmer can be a rough road to level up now with all the changes Anet made to the game. Having to wait so long for solid traits makes it harder for them vs the warrior.
Now I have been around since beta, so I level my alt via crafting, b-day level books and EOTM.
but as a newer player, you really should enjoy leveling up through the various zones and doing the hearts and events.
Both are fun to me. Mesmer is more involved and by the time you are like 60 level you are rolling fine. Just getting there can be a little rough vs the warrior

Mesmers are highly trait reliant, so this tends to be the case, but you can still roll a condition build for leveling to make things a bit easier.
Now, leveling an Engineer is kind of like repeatedly stabbing yourself in the groin. It’s pure torture and always has been.
Mesmer is my favorite profession and I loved leveling them under the old trait and leveling system, but under this new trait acquire system it could be a real pain. Part of the fun with mesmer for me was trying different builds – experimenting with traits, utility skills and weapons combos. Even leveling my third mesmer, whose traits were grandfathered in, under this new system seemed boring waiting for her to have access to some higher level traits.
I never thought I would enjoy playing a melee profession so didn’t try warrior until my 4th toon. Although not my favorite I still enjoy playing him and of course I play melee with all my mesmers most of the time although some situations are much better with other weapons. Guardians and mesmers can use almost as many weapons as a warrior and in fact I use more variety on my mesmer than on my warrior.

Perhaps this is the player base that the NPE addresses?
Both classes are well liked for Dungeons / end game.
However, in my opinion:
Mesmer was a real pain to level until bout lvl 65ish…. then became fun.
Warrior was easy and fun for all 80 levels.
Mesmer’s Utility is undeniable.
Warrior’s DPS is almost Trolly.
If your play style is in your face, come get some type of thing. Warrior.
If you prefer to sit back and lol as your opponent stands there wondering what the heck is happening right now… Mesmer.
So wait…I am confused.
Warrior is a DPS Train and is not really wanted in high end fracs….so then whats the point in having a warrior?
Or is Warrior more of a PvP fighter due to the damage?
Then when do I want a Mesmer over a Warrior?
Warriors are fine in high end fractals, they are the easiest class to manage and do fine in all game types. Mesmers are also good in all types (more roaming than zerg in wvw though).
Mesmers are also fine, less damage, and less survivability but in my opinion very fun. Their damage generally increases the longer the fight is so against bosses and in 1v1 they are very good.
Both bring very good support (most important part for dungeons), warrior gives buffs that increase damage a lot (but more than one warrior isn’t that great, still they can easily do a lot of damage and have very high health).
Mesmers have unique utilities like portals (painlessly get the group across puzzles etc.), condition removal, boon removal, reflects, phantasm defender, boon steal, time warp (increases party dps by around 50%), and some stealth.
Mesmer’s out of combat mobility is low though, they don’t have good access to swiftness or movement speed buffs like other classes. In combat they are very mobile with many teleports.
Also do you like purple? Even if you don’t you’ll grow to like it.
Tl;dr for your class choices based on HL content
Warrior : Damage and support in form of aoe boons (might, fury, swiftness) and powerups to your party (aoe Banners, Empowered trait).
Mesmer : Damage mitigation (reflection of projectiles), support (condition removal) and crowdcontrol (dazes, stuns, pulls)
tl;dr for High level content team setups.
You almost always take a warrior in your team, you don’t need more than one but several warriors is fine.
You take a mesmer and only one, ever, in your team. You can remplace the mesmer with a guardian, you can have both a mesmer and a guardian (overkill support) but you NEVER want two mesmers in your party.
Mesmer is easy to play if you don’t have third hand or 20 fingers. In PvE, you may stop and park your mesmer to suitable spot, spawn clones/phantasms, and be a winner.
PvP/WvW is another story.
For me mesmer all the way. Could not figure out this whole hard to play until thing before or after updates. Very smooth levelling, for me it was faster and smoother than guard.
