Mike O’Brien on Account Security
I saw what you did there… LOL, so will ArenaNet!
The just need to ban the url of goldsellers… are always the same. I don’t know why ANET do nothing with that. It’s too simple.
did what ? aha i get ya, but no pun intended at all there on my part !
i Read what Mike O’brien Wrote about security and i agree with what was said but on the two step authentication i have a problem i don’t own a cell phone and seriously don’t want one will this mean that to play GW2 i will need one or will you offer authenticators for those who don’t have cell phones?
^Two factor authentication is good because it prevents hacking in the situation of a keylogger. But it is not extremely necessary if you follow the other tips. It’s a good article in my opinion.

Google Authenticator also has a phone in feature, that will call you with the code or something similar. You don’t need to have a cell phone necessarily, an iPod Touch will suffice or an iPad if you have one. iPod Touch these days are relatively inexpensive, doesn’t even have to be a new one. Any apple device running iOS 3.1.3 or newer, according to the google support pages for it.
Honestly if all these companies were that serious about security they would stop making us use email addresses as log in names. This way even if they have my username and password, they don’t know what my email is, so they can’t try and hack that to get around the email verification. It’s also a bit harder to send phishing attempts. I get tired of having to create and keep track of a new email for every game I play.
While I appreciate that Anet wants to help us make our accounts more secure, they shouldn’t force us into buying extra products ( I don’t have any apple devices) for account authentication… unless of course they want to buy it for me. Mobile Authenticators et al should be optional, not mandatory.

Before we start getting all uppity. You can also download the Google Authenticator as an application directly to your PC, entirely for free, believe it’s called gauth4win. Google links to it directly from the Google Authenticator installation pages.
Which is funny because you’d think people would investigate their options on the Google Authenticator by searching for it using Google.
Google.
Hmm, tried that. They don’t list a PC version.

Unless I’m just not looking for the right thing… looks like it’s all mobile applications.
gauth4win is your PC version. It just resides in the system tray.
Aha! Thank you. I’m going to bookmark the page so that when they do implement it, I can then download and install it. =)
I went and changed my password just to be double extra sure it wasn’t on the list of ones being tried by the scammers (I’m old and pedantic and refuse to call them hackers). One type of double authentication that I hadn’t seen before was the number pad in Hellgate Global where the numbers appeared in random order on the buttons. You had a 4 digit code to type in, but because the numbers were never in the same location it was tough to snag with a keylogger.
I don’t know how effective it was, but it certainly was much simpler than hooking up a token authenticator. I don’t mind those either though, I buy the devices for any game I play that offers them. I much prefer them over a mobile or desktop app.
He might start thinking he knows what’s right for you.
