My previous PC had similar specs and played OK on medium settings. HoT meant I had to have it on lowest to be fully playable, but that’s to be expected on minimum spec set ups.

I think there’s a disclaimer with the Minimum Requirements that says one may need better specs to play additions to the game. Or something like that.

I played with those specs for the first year, or so. What I have now is not much better; a bit more RAM and a quad-core. /shrug

From HoT website,

Windows® XP Service Pack 3 or better
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, Core i3, AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 or better
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA® GeForce® 7800, ATI Radeon™ X1800, Intel HD 3000 or better (256MB of video RAM and shader model 3.0 or better)
35 GB available HDD space

Due to potential changes, system requirements may change over time, and you may be required to upgrade your current system (or obtain a new system) to continue to play the game.

Well they do say core i3, which is about as fast as a 7700K or 1800X in crapthreaded apps and if they state 256mb graphics I assume that works on lowest settings.

So whats the problem?

Fun fact: I once ran Morrowind on a Geforce 256 DDR 32mb (with a heatsink!!!).

Since when were you ever able to have a decent experience with the minimum?

Although I speak from experience when I say Gw2 will definitely run on a lot of weak specs. Yea, it will die during big events as such, but better computers also struggle. And really, who does this really affect? People suddenly dusting off 11 year old computers to play Gw2 if they haven’t broken already?

I mean think about it. Even if you changed these minimum requirements to require much better specs, It’s literally differentiating between the moldiness of the potatoes. My old comp had a HD 4670 which is way better than the minimum but gets rekt by the iGPU of a modern processor.

Also, the game only takes up 28gb, not 35gb. Future proofing brah!

tl;dr They could change it to “Potato, but not too moldy” but really not worth the time.

It does say Minimim requirements..That usually just means you can play the game, but on the lowest settings, and dont expect 60+fps.It just means u can “Run” the game.

Just the 2gb part seems a bit off now with the 64bit client, theres no way it can handle that.

You definitely can run with 2 gb of ram. Certainly don’t recommend it but any Oom crashes didn’t happen after a few hours and mostly WvW. And it wasn’t regular occurance. Now certainly there is no reason not to get more memory, of course.

Many ppl still play on low end laptops as thats all they have, and 2GB ram is still quite common.
Its certainly not ideal, but playable as long as you arnt in big groups.
If you simply cater to ppl with hi end computers, you lose most of your player base.
And lots of ppl still use XP.

It would, the question would still be why. Pretty much all reviews in the last 2 years have shown DX12 to either give equal or lower/considerably lower performance, for absolutely zero visual gains. Yet people keep dragging it up like its the second coming of Christ for graphics engines.

Well, it’s got a bigger number. But, seriously, DX12 actually changes the internal model in a way that is vastly superior for heavily multi-threaded (and, thus, multi-core) games. It should be equivalent for anything using a DX <= 11 model, and better for anything taking advantage of the newer features. (Performance-wise.)

Graphically, the DX version makes less difference than what the developers do with the engine. Crysis shipped on DX9, after all.

(If graphics performance is worse with DX12, that’s basically “developers screwed up porting to …”)

And again, DX 12 is Windows 10 only. Considering so many people still use 7 or 8, that’s not a smart move.

I would certainly want an expansion solely around rewriting the game engine. It’d be like paying for a new game, but doesn’t look like tha’ts going to happen.

Of course, it does seem a bit off to talk about dx 11/12 in a thread about minimum requirements lol.

So the thing about minimum specs are that they are the minimum specs. It means you can run the game, and that’s about it. Do anything super intensive (like scale the graphics up, participate in events with lots of people, zerg fight in WvW) and the minimum specs can’t handle it. That doesn’t necessarily mean they need to be updated.

One thing that ANet could do though is to also add a “recommended requirements” below/above the minimum requirements. These would probably be the specs to play on medium-high settings for the graphics, and being able to participate in world boss fights/zergs/other large scale events/fights. Not enough to have you always at 60fps, but enough to where you won’t be crashing.

Also, stop bringing up the DX crap. We have been told straight up that moving to DX11 won’t improve the performance of the game at all. If you refuse to believe that I don’t know what to tell you, but upgrading to DX11 won’t make the game run any better. It just won’t.

Sorry, that’s not a “low-end” spec list, though to be fair, it’s not even a list for any spec of anyone. Hint: A 7600k with that ram doesn’t even work.

Windows 10, lovely system, but why?

You mention 7600k and FX together. Sorry, lol. Those are not anything resembling equivalent nor do they fit together in a “low” end spec. Or even high end. You could at least mention the upcoming Ryzen 5s Why 7600k? Are you telling someone with a 4690k to ditch it and get kaby lake instead? What if someone sees, yo, I only have a 2500k, let me “upgrade” to a fx-8350.

GTX 970??? So people can buy a GPU fall asleep for Gw2? Now, I only have an old 1680 × 1050 monitor but my 1060 might occasionally approach 1/2 load in the most intensive WvW big fights. Either card is overkill and will always be until they rewrite the game engine. Pro Tip: Don’t buy a new 970

Why 16 GB of ram? Nice to have but Gw2 uses like 2-3. Also, I’m not sure why it is so specific.

You’re going to burn holes in casual players’ wallets. Please do some more research.

The point of recommended specs is to inform people rather if their old computer can play Gw2 and maintain a decent experience (30+ fps at 1080p). Nobody is going to go out and buy a new i3-2100 since anyone with 1 good eye will see they can buy the newer i3s for the same cost. However, they might see that their Core 2 Duo is too old and they can go improve their experience by getting a new i3-7100 or Pentium G4560 and enjoy a new experience for cheap. But someone with an i3-4160 is going to be like “oh, I guess I’ll hang on to this until it breaks”

200 gig space when Gw2 needs 30?

Likewise, someone with a GTX 460 or something is going to go out and pick up a nice little Rx 460 for $80 and enjoy a modern card that can play new games. But someone with a 950 or 1050 can stay put and wait before upgrading.

How does your list help anyone choose anything?

If you desire silky smooth 60 fps at ridiculously high resolutions, then sure get the latest and greatest, but why would Anet here or anyone else need to inform you of that? You’d do it anyways. Yes I know new AAA titles ridiculously bloat their recommended to get you to buy new computers, but this is a 5 year old MMO where accessibility is a priority

In all seriousness, allow me to revise this.

“Power Settings”
Windows 7 64 Bit or Higher
2nd generation Intel I5 or I7 Processor or newer or Ryzen
8 GB of ram
50 GB of Free space, SSD
GTX 760 or R9 270 or better

I mean you could do such a thing, but really, is it worth the effort?
