Well, the title is basically my question:
Why did the prices for mithril ore and ingots went up this much since 19/20th december? Did I miss any fancy new recipe or use for them?
Or is there some kind of inside-trading going on again because mithril will get important with a new update?

Cheap snowflake mats make creating rare Givers weapons to throw into the mystic toilet for precursor attempts very cheap to do in massive bulk.

I suspect mithril had been being vacuumed up by many trying to get cheap precursors.

Or maybe the aliens are stealing all our mithril, and the next living story chapter will be all about Mordremoth’s alliance with the mithril-stealing aliens (who shall, for reasons of brand loyalty, be sylvari colored silver) in a bid to take over the world.

Ah, that’s actually a good explanation! Really didn’t think about that. But I guess it makes sense since it should be cheaper to craft this than buying weapons on the TP or crafting other weapons. Thanks for your help!

If you check elder wood, it rose at the same time, even though not that fast because there are huge stockpiles from foxfire farming.

Around the 19th of December, Anet adjusted the droptables of Giant Wintersdays gifts to give less essences of luck but more snowflakes. That pushed t5 flakes below 2s.
The other t5 mats (bones, fangs etc.) followed suit soon after.
