Why can’t we do this? I thought we use to be able to mix different pieces together before the new outfit system came out and I don’t understand why they would remove this option.

Only the ones that are sold as “Outfits” aren’t mixable. Armor sets still are.
Example: “Noble Count Outfit” is an outfit, so is not mixable. The Aetherblade sets are armors sets, so you can mix them with anything else.

I am aware of this, but why can’t outfits be mixed? I’m pretty sure individual pieces of the pirate outfit used to be mixable for example.

They do that because making new outfits is WAY easier, so it demands less developing time, they don’t need to worry about clipping with other armor parts, neither with class armor weight, they only need to make 5 skins and done (1 for each race)
While armor skins you need to make 3 different armor weights and then all the 6 parts of each fit in the 5 races and reduce the clipping with other armors, so they need to worry about 3 * 6 * 5 = 90 parts to be able to release it.

Random, you are correct you use to be able to mix some aspects of outfits… However if I recall correctly there was only top + bottom + hat maybe+ toy/costumebrawl tool. You could not mix outfits with armor sets. Also many outfits tops were the majority of the outfit. So not alot of option for mix n match was available. (This is about outfits not about the parts that got turned into tonics)

If outfits were designed in separate pieces, like armour is, I’d totally agree with you.

However, outfits are designed in only two separate parts, the body and the head. This means that the outfit can be designed seamlessly- something that is truly fantastic because it means that the designers/developers can have free reign over how the outfit will look.

It also means that less development time has to be allotted to each outfit as devs don’t have to consider any clipping issues with other outfit/armour pieces. Subsequently, this means that outfits can be sold relatively cheaply and can be designed fast, ultimately leading in a larger variety of outfits for the players.

One day, I do hope that devs will allow mixing and matching of outfits. However, I will never get my hopes up because the amount of retroactive work that is required would be phenomenal, especially if you consider how frequently new outfits are released.

The least they could do is allow us to wear different headgear with our outfits, like what was possible in GW1. This is a reasonable request as it has fewer obstacles than total mix-and-match.

OP was correct about this, when the current outfits were “town clothes” parts of them could be mix n matched with other town clothes. However like I said be-for many of these were large chunks not individual pieces. Making the mix n match variety very low.

The original outfits, I’m sure, were created in a few different parts. I doubt that this is true for more recent outfits though.

Yea, most likely they are just head and then the entire body… I mean look at the balth outfit, hide your helmet and it’s pretty obvious mix n match isn’t intended xD.

Just felt it worth mention due to the large amount of the population that is still wishing town clothes tonics would get changed to be useable again.

Two major reasons:

1) Development: it’s easier two design a beautiful outfit if you don’t have to worry about clipping or the division between torso and legs especially.

2) Purpose. Outfits are meant to be worn over the armor. They require no transmutation charges. So they are meant to have more restrictions of course.

That being said, as a mainly pvp player, I have a lot of transmutation charges (also the whole “locked into HotM” situation drove me to spend plenty of them already), and I would like more armor sets to be added in the gem store, rather than outfits.
