So we’ve probably all seen multiple sets of armors which are… well, you’d expect to see them on a street corner rather than a battlefield. That’s fine by me; if you play a character and want hulking abs shown or lady/manly bits almost showing its up to you. What I, personally, would like to see is the ability to make the armors slightly less revealing.

Let’s take some examples!

Tier 3 human cultural armor (Assassin’s Armor):
The chest piece has a fair bit of underboob showing. I’m not opposed to having that but I’d love to see a leather worker be able to add a little bit of material to cover that up. Maybe just have the bottom moved a little bit down? Again, completely optional, only effects your character if you choose to do that!

Arah Dungeon Leggings
As with the above its a lovely piece of armor — one of my favorites, truth be told! The one thing that gets me is that the female variant has a TON of pelvis showing… to the point where I think it’d be marked NSFW in most jobs. Again, fine if you want that, but I’d love a variant added (crafted by an armorsmith?) that has, say, some chain-mail pants like the male one.

I feel I can’t say this enough but this would be optional and no one would be forced into having a different armor skin than the one you want. It would also give those of us who aren’t 14 year old boys more good armor choices (yes that’s a joke. Take is as one. :P) I’m no artist/modeler but what I’m thinking of would be minor changes that shouldn’t take too long to design and wouldn’t alter the general feel of the armor pieces. This also wouldn’t just be some kind of texture/model replacement mod. This would allow you to show off your characters personality better whilst allowing others to do the same.

There are skins I could never ever buy knowing that in real combat I’d be all over the place as a female character.

I want the choice of the cool skins without the underboob and pelvis action that I keep seeing.

Just one question – did any woman do any of the armor art? If so, who did which ones that are so uncovered?

Please don’t take this as “prudish” – I can’t see any charr wearing some of the armors; this has to do with the character’s character, they’d never wear half of what is available.

Or maybe you could take your pick of the dozens of trench coats that are available for medium armor.

Or you could pick any of the dozens of heavy leg armor that is fully covered.

You know… instead of the hyperbole maybe take a look at your wardrobe and realize that there are way more “modest” armor pieces than skimpy and then use those.

I agree, the first time I saw the Winged Armor on my necromancer my first reaction was “wtf wat is dis?”. Then I checked the male version of the same armor and, well… it’s incredibly prude compared to female Winged Armors. I was so, so disappointed :’(

I won’t lie, I’m not bothered about revealing armor for the most part (and I’m guilty of liking some of them! And that there’s heavy armor that actually looks like it does the job), but I feel that some armor is just… ridiculous. How has my necromancer not exhausted herself from using magic just to keep herself warm in Frostgorge Sound? :P (for what it’s worth, my necro is wearing “prudish” armor. Cabalist and something else)

But I’m pleased with the variety of armors and modesty (or lack thereof) in the GW2 wardrobe. Sometimes it’s nice to run around baring your midriffs ^^

Please don’t take this as “prudish” – I can’t see any charr wearing some of the armors; this has to do with the character’s character, they’d never wear half of what is available.

This: While I’ll have no problem running around in a Winged set as a mesmer or elementalist, I’d assume that necromancers would be much more prudish – there’s nothing horrifying about a hawt strippah chick in the flesh (fresh flesh I may add; if it was rotting or ectoplasmic flesh that would be different), even if she’s raining death on your head.

On the other hand (and where the OP and I may differ), I’d like to see more revealing armor for male characters, like you know, Lich-level revealing. I would totally drop cash for it

Heh, I’m actually okay with revealing armor (which is why I stressed the optional bit so much). I don’t mind seeing it. Even male armor too… to each their own and if you want male eye-candy go for it! I just don’t see why my female characters can’t put on some pants under an armored thong :P

Yes there is a huge list of clothes which aren’t revealing in the slightest. But are there any that look like Arah’s armor? The Assassin’s armor? No.

Arena Net did a lot better than most other companies do with balancing the armor selection between revealing and modesty. I would just love to see variants for existing armors with small alterations or layers added.

If you really think there is more revealing armor than “nun” armor, you have not spent very much time in your wardrobe. Even light armors only have about 10% of their total armors as revealing. No, I do not consider open arms/legs areas to be revealing. That was done on purpose even in real life in order to increase mobility. Its called LIGHT ARMOR for a reason, and its not just because its made of cloth or whatever.

Whenever I try to dress up my characters, I am constantly annoyed at having to pick from one of four “revealing” heavy sets, all of which look pretty bad, while the rest of the armors leave me looking like some kind of faceless metal box.

You making sound like this is a new thing. Most of the time armours in fantasy games are always not made to be pratical which is usually affect the female characters!

Honestly what bothers me is that they seen to be bias toward Light armours character especially toward female light armours (well except for female charr and asuan). Their crafted and lower tier armours are quite imaginative but when you look at the heavy armours, they all look similar and plain! I mean heck, the crafted scale and reinforce scale armours are the same as each other but with different texture! None of the light armours have a “reinforce” version.

Also yes I know the whole trench armors for mediam armour character aswel.

You want more modest armors???

Go play Forsaken World then. It is the only MMO that I know which has progressively increased covering armor as you level up. You want skimpy armor in that game, you’ll be paying upwards around $50 for the skins.

Level 0 = Skimpy School girl
Level 80 = 10 tons of fabric

I believe ANet already stated that women helped in designing the armors, so the “Did a woman help…” line won’t work.

Sex sells and ANet knows it just like every other MMO out there.

The key word everyone seems to be missing from the OP is “optional”. The OP isn’t suggesting that they stop making skimpy armors, just that they give the option to make them less revealing. Optional, not forced on everyone. And telling everyone to find a different outfit is ignoring the point here. I like trench-coats well enough, but in the medium armor class it feels like most of the options are overly bulky and for awhile the “sleek” and tail-less options were skimpy. I will say though that arenanet has done a nice job adding in more to the medium armors that are a nice balance between less bulk and skimpy.

And the issue here isn’t just about being afraid of looking sexy, some people want to look like they are wearing battle-appropriate attire.

I don’t expect Arenanet to redo any of the older skins to fit the suggested idea, but I wouldn’t mind some newer ones having this format. I get the argument about resources and taking too much time to develop, but the “if you don’t like it, don’t wear it” attitude seems ridiculous when what the OP suggested would be optional. Also, you’d be flipping tables if you were in a thread suggesting “more skimpies!” and people showed up and started giving that response.

Make an armor skin is already hard (that is why many outfits is released but not a single armor skin in a while), make one that can be changed on demand in game is something that I can’t imagine being done.

Remember that every skin they make they need to make 10 skins (male and female of every race) and make sure that the 6 pieces doesn’t clip too bad among them and among the other skins, imagine if they also had to make an extra look for every skin for a non skimpy options, it is just madness. In the end they would need to create 120 armor parts for every skin …

I agree that more armor sets need to find a middle ground in their design. Many times there are female armor sets that would be nice if they were closer to the male version, and those same male versions could stand to lose a few layers and buckles to be closer to the female version.

There is nothing that says even full plate can’t be made to look a bit more feminine while also being plausible/functional.

Even more for all of the medium armor out there. (Everything doesn’t need a trench coat or copious amounts of skin showing. There really IS a middle ground here folks.

You can’t POSSIBLY think that’s true. There are two versions (gender). And in most cases the female version only shows up on the Human/Norn/Sylvarii. Everything that comes after is a matter of stretching the same assets to hook to different skeletons, plus a few cutouts built into the basic boot/glove so Charr fingers/toes can poke through. Which is why the only boots that actually acknowledge the shape of Asura feet are the racial armors. And why Tixx is perfectly happy to wear human racial armor despite being an Asura – no they didn’t make 6 new pieces just for him.

and make sure that the 6 pieces doesn’t clip too bad among them and among the other skins

you have the option to dress your character any way you want. You don’t need to wear the single underboob top that is in the game. So there isn’t a problem, unless you want to start dictating what OTHER players dress their characters with, which at that point you’re just a SJW.

Now on point. It is a good idea, I agree. Everyone has their own preference, which is completely fine. The only problem is that…the time & resources spent doing that could be better use in providing other future content. Look at HoT production right now, they are all so focused on that – leaving us high and dry on any content for months! If, and ONLY if, they have spare resources to focuses on such optional features, then yes they should do it. But I rather have them spend time on more content.

I’ve never seen a great deal of disparity between modest and skimpy armors, but there’s definitely a great deal of disparity in stylish choice. If you want a Kratos or a Tolkien ranger getup, you’re SOL – but if you want to look like a playboy model or a massive juggernaut with too many spikes, there’s plenty of options in the game.

In my opinion, less is more. There’s no need to throw on a bunch of extra kitten just to make armor stylish. Human heavy T3 is a perfect example.

Already in game. You can make a modest character as simply as you can make a risque character, or a silly one at that.

You cite the most obvious examples of the more risque choices for your case and ignore the dozens and dozens of simple and modest options which exist.

The depth of armor choices in game is enormous. If you want a particular look, you can in all likelihood make it happen.

That you should fail to utilize that to your advantage is a problem with you. Perhaps you need the assistance of GW2 Fashion or something.

Because half naked women when their counterpart in said armor is fully covered isn’t as or more insulting?

Sorry, but the truth of the matter is many of the skimpy female armor skins in this and other games ARE pandering to an assumed audience demographic of teen/young adult male and can be very off putting to some female players and even some male players (like me).

While it might be fine for a good many people, personally I can’t stand the underboob armor, or more importantly, I love the armor but I HATE the underboob and because of that i will never get it. For me, it is highly impractical and only serves one purpose. As armor it is a horrible design, and that really isn’t the only one like that.

As a contrast, I really love the Krytan armor skin for female medium armor. It is both feminine AND functional while keeping with it being in a fantasy world.

Just one question – did any woman do any of the armor art?

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Kristen_Perry

This is something that I see way too often posted often insisting that the revealing nature of female armor in video games and media comes from the perversion of male artists and designers.

While this definitely exists in some franchises, and mostly in Asian ones -> (Soul Calibur), most of the games released from western markets have substantial female influences in the design of what is worn by female characters.

Now, is this a tactic used to sell copies of a game due to sex appeal? That’s uncertain for some – we definitely know it exists – I mean look at the slew of low-quality mobile/browser games marketing naked/half-naked female models as protagonists in their advertisements, but ultimately many of the designs come from female artists. To make claims that women have no voice in the production of these aesthetics, though, is totally false and is complete misinformation bordering on subtly pushing an anti-male agenda.

I’m all for diversity, though, especially for what is the medium armor in GW2; it’s pretty much either all trench coats, or totally impractical/ridiculous.

Everyone is doing a BEAUTIFUL job of missing both the part where I said OPTIONAL

Nobody missed it, they’re just pointing out that the option already exists via different armor sets. If you think a particular armor set should be changed, then that is your problem with that design – not a thematic observation. Cherrypick any example you want, but there are modest and skimpy, no need to waste development resources on something so arbitrary.

If you really, really, really can’t find a modest set you thematically like as much as the skimpy, then you might be like me and just really picky. In which case, it’s time to hang up your hat and try something else.

Just give me this and I’ll be happy with medium armor. GW1 felt so much more…sensible?

I don’t foresee the changes to the wardrobe system to make this possible ever happening. Few and far between are games where you can customize individual pieces of gear to taste in terms of adding or taking away cloth.
