Moldy Bags
I think cotton scraps and piles of foul essence are the reason. Cotton scraps cost 4 – 5 silver each and you get 1 -3 of them per bag and the piles 25 silver each.
Also keep in mind that they can only be acquired through loot boxes in the reward track.

But you only get like, 1 or 2. The price hike puts retail to shame. For the same amount of coin you could buy half a stack of cotton instead of 1 random chance to get maybe 8 silver worth.
unfortunately, that’s how it works…
There are only 353 Moldy Bags available for sale, and those only because they were listed 3 years ago at too high of a price.
Moldy Bags effectively DO NOT drop in the game any longer so what you see on the market today is not indicative of any aspect of supply, demand, or “scalping”.

As an aside, how can one tell how long an item has been listed? I know I can see how long my items have been listed but I didn’t know we could see how old other people’s listings were. That information could prove quite handy, not only for buying but for future listings, as well.

We can’t actually see it, but if you go to a site that charts pricing history you can see if it has been very static at the price and volume to get an idea as to how active the market is.
In the case of these bags, someone bought out nearly the entire stock last October leaving only the most expensive ones from ancient times on the market. Because the market is nearly dead, those ancient expensive items appeared to be the “current” price and people started listing any they found at or below those prices.
Since nothing in those bags justifies those prices today and because the drop rate of the bags is nearly non-existent, it will likely take a very long time (years) for the market to accurately match the value.

Ah, I see. Thank you — I didn’t even know something like that existed.

Looks to me like the price only really started to spike about a year ago.
There’s a couple of bizarre spikes in “Sell” listings, but the “Buy” listings have stayed much more steady. Not sure why they’ve gone as high as they have in the past year, though, just the same.

That price spike appears to be related to someone trying to corner the market by buying up the entire stock and relisting at an absurd price point. Since there is no reason to actually buy these bags, I’m sure they lost a lot of money in the attempt.

Except that didn’t happen, not the relisting part. The price dropped within a hour back to near it’s previous range (the June 23rd spike). That was just exposing the preexisting outrageously priced items that are in the supply. The 7g 11s one shown on the GW2TP chart is still for sale. If you can’t control the flow of new supply, or other players pulling if from their own inventory, it’s impossible to pull a stunt like that and make it profitable.
