This is a ‘little’ bit of a bummer, for sure, no reason they couldn’t be like pets, and maybe as time goes on and they introduce the axe and sickle they will change it, but I went ahead and got it. I put it on what I consider my ‘main’, even though the smart choice might have been the Ranger, as she has a much easier time gathering. But oh well. My main gets all the ascended stuff as well, and my Ranger doesn’t too.

Well, it depends on how you play, honestly.

I play a ‘lot’, yet compared to a lot of people, I probably don’t have all that much money, and the money I do have was acquired from a ‘few’ lucky drops at dragon chests that sold on the trade post.

I don’t play fractals or dungeons, so the money I get is whatever you can get out in the world. I’m a crafter and pack rat, so I only sell materials once I hit 250 crafted and raw and my collectibles is full.

On the other hand, I buy $10 worth of gems every month, like clockwork, on the 20th. I decided when this game came out that it was worth spending $10/mo to support it. So I buy the occassional sleeveless shirt, witch outfit, transmutation crystals, extra bags, etc.

So it just kinda depends.

If it was an account upgrade that made all of your characters permanently not need a pick (though perhaps still being able to use Master/BL picks for increased rare drops, not that its noticeable anyway) then maybe.

I personally buy all my gems with gold anyway. There really is no good reason for me to buy gems with cash, given how much gold I have. (I still do not have enough that 6400 gems is insignificant, obviously.) Of course I know that some people will probably be of the opinion that ArenaNet really could not care less if I buy the stuff or not, then, but actually, the way the gem exchange is set up with the relationship between people buying gems with gold and people buying gems with real money, that’s not entirely true. They want gems to be bought and spent one way or another. (Then again, they technically could change the exchange rates however they want and nobody would really know.)

I’m not saying I would be opposed to paying $10 for one that is account wide. It’s just that it would be pointless for me to do that instead of using my gold. Soulbound, though, I’m not interested in it, either way, for 800 gems.

Therefore we proceed to write a sig.

The pick is more of a collector’s item than something you would buy to get value out of. Eventually, new, higher level nodes will be added, so it’s only a matter of time before the pick becomes obsolete, assuming you stick to current content.

I guess, in the interest of disclosure, I should perhaps point out that I bought a Permanent Black Lion Merchant Contract on the trading post, and thus that renders this item a bit more frivolous for me than it would be for most people. I don’t think that really had any bearing on my decision, though.

A week at the least. If it was any less, they would probably be showing the counter on the item.

Since it’s flame and frost themed, it’ll probably last at least until April 30th when the next event occurs. It may even last up until the end of that event, which would mean somewhere near the end of May.

This seems somewhat counter-productive in regards to getting rid of botting.

Not to sound like some kind of conspiracy theorist, but perhaps it’s a really good counter-measure.

Let’s pretend that Anet has a whole subroutine of logging coded into the Picks that track usage to the degree that through some algorithm can readily identify botters.

Combine that with the recouping of funds from the purchase of the Pick, and I could imagine it a pretty good anti-botting tool.

But that’s just a thought…

Then why wouldn’t they be able to implement that with regular tools?
Also, bots won’t waste their time on this because it’s unlikely they will last long enough for the molten pick to pay for itself.
Especially when you consider that they’ll use the cheapest tool they can for the gathering they’re doing, which makes it take even more swings to pay for than it does comparing it to Ori picks.

Completely valid. Was just a random thought I had w/o much analysis. No intention of defending. But, no reason at all for them not to implement it in all tools for that matter

I suspect that the gem exchange has a lot to do with the price point. ~15g is a pittance for an effect such as this, even if I’d never purchase gems with cash for this item.

Edit: That’s a shame too, since I look for any excuse to purchase gems to support the game. I can’t justify it at that price point though…

I doubt that. They’d probably bump of the effective quality of it if they added higher level nodes.

Not even sure they’d have to adjust it. The mouse over in the store specifically has a reference to ‘even Orichi’, like that’s all the further they thought about it, but the mouse-over for the actual item just says: “Used to mine all metals. Unlimited use. Soulbound.”

I hope they change their minds down the road and make it account bound and adjust existing items accordingly, but I’m fine with it the way it is too.

Not going to bother with this one. Wasting $10/20gold on a soulbound item when I can just get (accountbound) ori picks for karma/4silver.

I’m all for convenience items, but not when they expect me to pay $80/160gold just to supply my characters with a mining pick when I still need to visit a vendor for the axes and sickles anyway. I can just as well buy a new mining pick because I’m already at the vendor right?

Now if it was a full set (pick+axe+sickle) it might have been worth the $10/20gold.

/shrug 10 bucks is 10 bucks to me. And Idk about the fanboy comment. I spent around 800 dollars over the last 2 months on the game because it was fun, and I could. I support games that I enjoy. If I’m a fanboy for that, then ok. Again, it is 10 bucks, people at mcdonalds minimum wage in cali make that in an hour. As for gold – gems, takes me a day to make 20g. So kinda lost on the problem here. But to each their own I guess.

You are also missing the gold sink economical issue account bound versions would cause over time. But whatevs.. I have one, mining ori and mithril with lava feels pretty epic with my fused bow, 2 daggers, and greatsword.

Honestly, I don’t know what the price of it is, but for the quality of life improvement, I’ll probably be getting it.

I have to keep an ori pick, a mithril pick (I’m guess I’m just stingy and dont want to use ori on those lesser scummy metals) and I keep a whole row of ori pickaxes in my bank. I would finally stop swapping out pickaxes and free up about 15 slots of bank/inventory space. Seems like it would be worth it to me.
