Whoever thought it would be a brilliant idea to have one of the legendary items needed for the Moot collection gated behind failing multiple events to get Giant Shark to spawn should seriously get their heads checked. On top of that even when you finally do get people in the map to listen and not finish the event it’s not even 100% guaranteed. They had to have known that it would cause people to argue over finishing or not finishing an event.

It’s very sad that one they implement something without even thinking; and two whats even more sad is they didn’t even bother to test their poorly thought out implementation.

Edit

I thought of something additional to add. Anet likes to advertise that they have the friendliest community around. However implementing content like this does not promote friendliness.

Wait, you need to fail events in order to get it to spawn? And this is specifically implemented by ANet?

Bwahahahahahahahaha

To be honest, i dont think they realised at all. They saw a shark event and prob didnt realise how the chain works. There is a similar situation with Twilight and Dwaynas Temple, however the temple runs regularly enough it is less of an issue.

I would report it as a bug

Actually, IIRC, you need to fail TWO consecutive events to get the spawn and the required item is NOT a 100% drop.

That’s the sort of asinine game mechanic Square Enix love in FFXI, from 13 years ago.

Kraggy you are indeed correct. I don’t like to lump everyone into one basket as for the most part the GW2 community is really good. It’s just some people don’t know any better, but then you get the occasional troll. Anyways yeah you are right.

This may be asking for way too much here, but this would be the perfect opportunity for a Dev who handles the legendary collections to chime in on the discussion. Was it an oversight to have one of the items tied behind consecutive failed events or was it intentional? Was it also intentional for the Giant Shark Tooth not to be 100% dropped from killing the Shark?

The two events being referenced are:

Prevent krait from kidnapping Okarinoo quaggan
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Prevent_krait_from_kidnapping_Okarinoo_quaggans

Upon failure

Rescue the kidnapped quaggans before they reach Sipedon Deeps
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Rescue_the_kidnapped_quaggans_before_they_reach_Sipedon_Deeps

Upon failure

Kill the giant shark in Sipedon Deeps
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Kill_the_giant_shark_in_Sipedon_Deeps

Possible Solutions:

1. Change the Giant Shark to have a respawn timer similar to the Champion Krait Witch
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Champion_Krait_Witch

2. Have the Giant Shark spawn upon success of the events
3. Have the Giant Shark spawn regardless of success or failure

I’m in favor of solution 1 since it would require the least amount resources to fix. This is all tied to the Tier 1 Legendary Moot Collection which is why I bring the issue to light.

Anet should really create a sticky or something for all the bugged items in the legendary collections or something, because there seems to be quite a few.

OH DANG. I can see how the atmosphere can turn really toxic really quick. Anet literally divided the goals for events. It’s not only for the moot either, I’ve been hearing things in my guild about how there’s a temple event you have to FAIL to get an item for precursor.

You do NOT need to do this event for the Giant Shark Tooth. The one in Southsun Coves works and I am 100% certain because I just got it from that 2 days ago. I haven’t been anywhere near the Timberline shark in months.

They took a bad situation and made it worse. There has been a conflict over temple defense/assault events, with the loot farmers wanting the defense events to fail, for a long time. But there was no reason to care about the many other branching events in the game (except for a couple of events discovered to be farmable, such as Coiled Watch, that were nerfed to prevent this). Events would succeed or fail depending on whether there was anyone in the area who cared, so the failures would happen naturally.

Now, however, not only do you need many events to fail to get the right branch for precursor collections, there is more pressure not to let ANY event fail created by the trains farming for the new map rewards. Because of the map rewards, every map now feels like a 24×7 daily event map. “Events? Events? Please call events!” Failure events that you used to see regularly, like the chicken swarm at Salah Bayt in Malchor’s, are now rarely seen, but also required for certain achievements. The quaggans in Timberline were often successfully kidnapped by the krait because the event is out-of-the-way and features the much-hated underwater combat, so it was often ignored. That’s no longer true.

Asking the event farmers to let an event fail is like asking them to poke out their left eye with a pointed stick. Of course this creates a toxic situation!

The sad part is that having people actually doing all these events should be a Good Thing, but it has been turned into a Bad Thing by the precursor collections. The map rewards have players doing exactly what the game was designed for players to do: find and complete events. Creating pressure for the success of events while simultaneously creating pressure for the failure of the same events is not a bright thing to do at any time. But it is very hard to understand how it could be done by devs who already had the temple events as a living example of the problem it causes and who had already had to nerf other events that were creating similar conflicts.

You have to let the Dwayna temple defense event fail in order to do the assault so you can get some items from it for Bolt, one of the GS and a non-legendary collection. You need to let the Lyssa defense fail to get one of the collection item(not legendary). You need the Melandru temple defense to fail for Meteorlogicus…

So, after hanging out in Timberline asking people to let the event fail (Always saying please, never asking more than once, and still several got upset) I have managed to kill that Shark 4 times without getting the tooth.

So I read the suggestion about the Shark in Southsun. Yep – it worked perfectly. I am not sure how often that event spawns but at least it’s not a must fail chain to get it to spawn. I got the tooth in just one attempt too (could be lucky I guess).

The event is named “Kill the reef Shark in Sawtooth Bay”.

It’s a Champion and you probably want a few friends to kill it. I asked in mapchat and there came 4-5 nice people helping.

Would be nice if they had an updated tooltip for the item in the collection. I’ll have to check it out since a couple now reported it working.

If the one in Southsun works, I wonder if that means the one in Bloodtide will work as well? Or any of the risen megalodons (Sparkfly, Straits, and Cursed Shore)?

They should totally call it megalodon shark tooth and not giant shark tooth you know. So missleading

Just to confirm, after killing Timberline Giant Shark 6 times and Giant Shark Tooth not dropping…

The Champion Shark event in Southsun Cove was a one kill drop for Giant Shark Tooth for me!

Thank you all for this thread as I spent 4 days trying to get this drop…

Bumped because I know I’m not the only one that doesnt realise this yet. A few guys in Southsun tried to convince me that it wasnt going to work when I tried asking for help.
