Developers did a GREAT job making GW2 a friendly game (no competition for resources, cooperation with killing tough enemies, achievements for healing downed people etc.). But is there a way to make guilds even more friendly and involving? Because there are people in every guild who are too shy to talk in guild chat, and other people, who only join guilds for some benefits.

Guilds tend to take on the quality of it’s leader. The leader sets the tone for the guild and if he/she is good at what they do, they’ll attract/recruit people that share their vision of what a guild should be.

Anet can’t do anything to make guilds more “friendly”. But there are people out there who have friendly, fun guilds.

It just takes work on the part of the leaders.

You also need to look at the guild par of this forum. There are plenty of great guilds out there. You don’t want to join the ones who spam recruiting in map chat – most of them are about size not involvement.

Agreed. This is something I took far too long to learn.

In GW1 I’d just join whatever guild happened to be spamming chat when I was looking (later on I narrowed it down to one from the right faction) and I just thought it was a weird coincidence that I never found a guild where people were actually friends or where I could get to know anyone properly. They usually had a very high rate of people leaving, and sooner or later would fall apart due to some stupid drama, or the leader would suddenly change the rules and ruin it. (For example one guild was a great casual, chatty guild for 4 months, then the leader decided they wanted to control a town so everyone had to farm 10k faction points a day or be kicked. A week later it was almost dead.)

I’m not saying you can’t find good guilds that way, you can. It’s just less likely.

I’ve since learned that an important first step in finding a good guild is to get a clear idea of what you want from them. Then go looking for that specifically.

But ultimately a guild, in any game, is a group of people so it’s going to be defined by the people in it. No game can force everyone to talk in guild chat or to be a genuinely dedicated member. They can make it extremely inconvenient to not do those things, but all that would do is put those people off joining a guild at all. Likewise you will always get some guilds with a lot of drama, and some which are more hardcore or more casual. All you can do is try to find one that’s right for you.

As somebody who runs a “friendly and involved” guild, I’m always somewhat baffled by these claims.

Guess what, guys. We’re out there. We tend to be small because you can’t have 500 members without drama. You probably don’t know about us because we don’t spam mapchat looking for members.

Most of us do want more members, though! We tend to recruit by doing content with other players. Ever run a dungeon with two or three people from the same guild and have a good time? Well… ask about their guild! Ever see a WvW havoc wearing the same tag? You know, that guild you’ve seen before, but you don’t know much about them? Well… ask about their guild!

Small, community-oriented guilds are usually careful about how quickly they add members. My guild, for example, would never add more than a couple new members in a week. Why? Well, we don’t want to dilute ourselves. We have an attitude and a style that we all like. New players need time to adjust (or to realize they don’t fit and leave) and we don’t want to throw off the balance while they do.

Anyway, sorry for the mini-rant.

tl;dr Those guilds exist, you’re just ignoring them or don’t realize they’re around.

What made me leave many guild in this game is the guilds who makes it a REQUIREMENT to participate in guild missions/events/meetings and so on.

It’s not a job, it’s a kitten game.

Sure I could have asked more about the guilds before I joined, I do that now. But I just don’t understand their mentality.

I used to run my own guild. It had no requirements other than beeing nice to eachother. It worked out really well.
I had to take a break from the game though, and when I came back 6 months later most people had found another guild.
But that was ofc on me for not staying and keeping the guild going.
A good guild depends on good leaders as mentioned above.

No competition…All competition is removed from game beside PvP where the classes are unbalanced…

On-topic:Many players join guilds only for guild events and the boosts,in my guild there’s 500 members from which 50-80 plays actively and only 10-15 are able to talk, and we speak the same language.
