Mount Idea
I’m pretty much against mounts, but if you want to get an overview of the opinions:
Regarding mounts please use this:
http://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/game/gw2/Mounts-merged
Listing 1600 posts of people somtimes for and mostly against mounts.
General consensus tends to be a minor amount of players wants mounts,
If so, they often, but not always, want speed buffs and sometimes combat options.
The majority is against, most of the time stating as COMMON reasons against mounts:
- Imagine -all- people getting a mount for an achievement….It would be horrid!
- Server lag, Servers lag down to single digt frame rates on high pop numbers as is.
- no need for clutter, People already frown at wings, now imagine placing winged horses griffons and other big beasts underneath them…
- lore violation, (only -enemies- in GW1 used to ride animals, they were used as pack animals however.)
- unfairness (P2W), ESPECIALLY with speedboosts/ combat enhancement /options if gem store.
- the problems with implementation of mounts (A moa for Asura? Then place a Charr on it…. don’t think so….)
Also the lack of neccesity for mounts due to:
- WP’s
- speed buffs/ perma speed/sigil speed
- gliding/ teleports and and so on, as alternative modes of travel
Is a fair point,
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.

Mounts should have been implemented at launch
Swiftness, mushrooms, signets, skill, traits, masteries, and so forth that give speed should never have existed and all the time and energy they wasted implementing systems to replace the mounts would have been better spent on other aspects of the game.
To little to late now though all people ever really wanted was an additional fantasy aspect of a matching mount to their cosmetic choices. As for myself I just wanted them to have a simple baseline speed function that doesn’t mess with my choice of skill, traits, or so forth on my bars but your stuck altering a perfectly good combat build in order to get any sense of speed since the launch of this game. A Mesmer needed travelers runes, focus, signet, or even becoming a chrono in order to get any sort of speed or movement. None of that would be an issue at all if we had a mount movement system early on.
Furthermore I don’t think TC is really beating a dead horse there are many new players and many vets who have left so to them its a new game and its a new horse and their repeating and asking for the same things people have asked for since the launch of this game. The outcome will be the same for these new players as it was for the older ones and the neglect will continue.

A.) it is a dead horse no matter if people are aware of past conversations. One short google search throws up the gw2 merged mount thread. People jut being lazy as usual.
B.) What you wanted (a baseline speedfinction) was specifically left out and introduced with value into the character build aspect of the game. Mounts never fit and are not needed in the GW universe. Then again, most people comming from WoW are used to classes getting dumbed down and streamlined to all play the same.
C.) Especially considering players comming from different MMOs, we get it, you had something in game xyz which you really liked and want this aspect to get copied to GW2. Why stop at mounts? Why not introduce item degradation, regular raids, cash shop only mounts, etc.? Let’s make this game a full copy of the game you came from. Then again, why not just go back to the game you came from? Seems so much easier.

Oh, so I’m lazy because I’ve never seen a mount thread before and replied to one on the forums before doing an exhaustive search for any potential “dead horses”?
Thank you for your judgment on WoW players. As a former WoW player, I feel right at home with the degree of rudeness you display to total strangers on the forum. Did you used to play as well?
And picking up on your disdain for players like myself…
Look, bud. I get that you think I’m encroaching on YOUR game, but drop the attitude. It’s unnecessary. I made a suggestion not realizing it was such an emotionally charged issue. I apologize for peeing in your cornflakes. Forget I said anything.
Sheesh! So sensitive around here!
This topic returns every other month it seems, and the result is always the same.
The result is just same up until the point ArenaNet decides otherwise, obviously =P
But to play devil’s advocate:
While waypoints do exist , and make up for a way better use to get around, this does obviously not mean mounts cannot co-exist next to the waypoint system. Basically like gliding really, it has no real place in all of Tyria, but in HoT it’s very powerful. So if a Mount system were to emerge during an expansion, then surely the system would function most optimal in maps created with it in mind.
But yeah a mount with a single boost to speed would probably be not as useful. Unless they were to give special abilities to them or something, which just could end up breaking alot of the game.
There’s is no real argument against mounts to be honest, with maybe the exception of performance issues.

Some people are just rude around here. Try not to let that shade your opinion on the community in general.
And if you did try to search the forums, you might have made the mistake (through no fault of your own) of using the in-forum search tool, which is broken crap. :P
See, what you needed to do was a Google search:
site:forum-en.guildwars2.com mounts
That would lead to the huge mount thread as the top link. It has reasons that range from “wah no WoW things in my GW2” to “concerns about execution and system balance”. It’s a wide range and a logical/emotional topic.
Personally, I don’t care for mounts in GW2, except maybe for the occasional toy item, but PvE could really benefit from some travel speed equalization. Then again, I’d lob money at a proper Charr road rover or Asuran hoverboard, so my position isn’t so immutable.

Let me tell you something, Aliam, that response was tame compared to my recent experiences with another poster. But that’s not to say all the posters around these parts are rude or obnoxious. Hardly. Quite frankly, these forums tend to be professional in the extreme. So much so, you often have to tiptoe on your responses . . . especially when someone kittens you off.
But yes, every forum will have its special flowers. That said, if you feel someone is disrespectful or rude, feel free to report it with that flag icon and an administrator will sort it out.
And back to the actual topic . . . no mounts thank you for the reason I already listed. On a side note, we do have ‘cosmetic’ mounts in the form of a flying carpet, a broom, and a Magento-like bubble.
But they don’t give an speed increase in case you’re wondering.
(edited by Ardenwolfe.8590)
So here’s an idea for starters:
Mounts grant +50% movement speed out of combat and may only be summoned out of combat. Upon entering combat, the speed boost drops to +25%.
So if you have a movement speed trait or access to swiftness, you aren’t gaining anything by staying on the mount in combat. But if you’re just passing through and you didn’t trait for foot speed, staying on the mount is the better option.
My thinking is to minimize/eliminate any potential combat advantages from mounts, instead using them to increase convenience and travel speed out of combat. This would also free up players who don’t necessarily need the foot speed in combat to trait as they like instead of feeling compelled to take speed traits due to the overall time reduction to the leveling process.
Opportunity cost in relation to character builds happens when players have to choose between taking one desirable option and another desirable option. “Freeing up players” so they don’t have to trait, etc. for speed would remove an opportunity cost from the build system.
While there may be some people who build for speed to have in combat, most build for speed to get where they’re going faster and avoid getting bogged down with fighting mobs. Players run past or through mobs constantly unless they’re looking to fight them. Speed boosts enable that. There is currently an opportunity cost for that ability. Your proposal would remove that cost.
Is that a bad thing? It seems to me that traits are most relevant in combat. I mean, you can just swap them at will outside of combat, right? So what is a trait for out-of-combat swiftness but an extra button to push for no reason? These are not permanent choices we make.
Do you WvW? As it is now, players built to generate speed do not pause to alter their builds any time they fight. They have to choose.
And yes, even in PvE, letting players have everything they want in a build is not a good thing for MMO’s. It tends to remove build diversity.
OOC speed is a convenience feature. Pausing before every single fight to alter one’s build is inconvenient. People, in my experience, are not doing this. Thus, they have to choose which they want — the best combat build or their movement build.

I apoligize, maybe you weren’t lazy. I simply assumed this thread was created due to one of the most common reasons people bring this topic up.
Then again if you were not lazy and aware of the code of conduct:
- Read the forum before asking a question. There’s a good chance your question has already been answered.
- Use the search function before posting. This will focus the discussion and facilitate a response.
paiered with the sticky right at the top of the forum:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Searching-the-Forums/first#post4701411
this does change things.
Now you were best case illinformed and worst case intentionally breaking forum rules.
This has nothing to do with rudeness. I was simply assuming you were posting according to forum rules and no, I won’t put a smily face or give you a hug after every single sentence. As far as the WoW crowd goes, you said it yourself, the people coming from that game are toxic and thus not well received (especially when breaking forum code and bringing up sensitive topics).
