I have a 19 thief and a 15 mesmer…. I like both but I can’t get away from my thief just because of the 25% movement speed passive. Why can’t all classes have a travel skill?

Just make them not work in combat… That is why MMO’s offer mounts, faster movement. I understand there is instant travel, which is nice… But I am addicted to moving at 25% speed and grinding monsters.

25%? The current cap is at 33%. I wouldn’t mind if Anet boosted the cap for PvE. there are times in combat and exploration where it feels like 25-33% doesn’t do much to me.

its not that I mind the 33% movement speed, its that only certain classes can get it…..or any passive increases.

I think all classes should have access to it, its just too great an advantage in PvP and WvWvW. and just as a quality of life thing.

All classes should have equal access to such a fundamentally powerful speed increase.

Are there ways outside of skills and cash shop potions to get movement speed?

Movement speed is a key element to RPG’s…. Diablo 3 is an example… Base character speed is soooo slow…

GW2, same logic applies…. All characters feel sluggish unless you have a speed boon OR you are a thief/hunter…. Hunter gets 10% passive and thief get 25% passive…. IT’s TOO good…

I don’t even like my thief, but since he moves so fast, I can grind so much faster and it’s more relaxing. My mesmer, is soooooo slow not only in combat, but movement compared to my thief.

Elementalists can get a 33% speed buff with air. One with the staff and one with a heal slot skill. You can stay at 33% for roughly 25 seconds with a 5 second cd to start the cycle all over again. And that’s not even going into the air trait line which has constant speed buffs.

World of Warcraft isn’t the only game with fast movement speed.

Everquest 2 has very fast mounts AND flying mounts.

Diablo 2, introduced a patch to increase base movement speed at one point because they realized players didn’t like moving slow. (Common sense)

GW2, offers speed boons in town… Why? Because towns are so large and it’s convienient. I’m just asking we get more of that convienience in the overall game not just the city. A mount system, an out of combat movement system of some sort that everyone can get…. Maybe sell mounts for gems… Make some money. Why not?

Dual dagger. Get the 10% from air. Then the one that can give you up to 25% in air. Then the 15% in arcane for having a dagger equipped, then the 10% passive from signet of air. And then have a dagger offhand for ride the lightning and updraft (updraft gives swiftness. However it rolls you away from the direction you are facing, OR your targeted enemy/neutral, you can use things like bunnies to roll you in the right direction, or bind a key to about face, while running press it, then 5 then press it again and voila, you’re running in swiftness without having to roll the wrong way)+

I’m glad I’m not the only one annoyed by the slowness of the base movement speed. My Elementalist has air traits constantly so I can switch to it to get around faster. My Thief has Signet of Shadows on the bar constantly. My Guardian has Retreat and Save Yourselves! on his bar so he can juggle those for swiftness. I’d like to have those trait points and/or utility bar spaces for something else, but it just detracts from my gaming experience too much to be moving around at a glacial pace. I’ve even taken to calling combat mode “Molasses Mode” because of the slowness of the movement.

There’s an optical illusion that makes it worse for larger races. Running around at base speed on my Asura seems much faster than it is, but running around at base speed on my Norn and Charr just feels painfully slow.

I’d like to see some mounts too. There may be fast travel via waypoints, but GW2 is much like Skyrim. In both games, I didn’t like to fast travel that much because there are always interesting things happening along the way. There are other parallels. Skyrim has fast travel, we have fast travel. Skyrim has sprinting to get around short-term, we have speed boons. Skyrim has horses for getting around longer-term, we have… nothing.*

*Here’s where the trolls are reaching for the reply button to tell me that I should go play Skyrim instead. Please, try and restrain yourselves.

Warriors and engineers can get perma swiftness without giving up too much of other things.

Only class I really feel slow as is when playing the mesmer. They have to give up alot to obtain perma swiftness or decent speed in general. I’ve tried speccing for reduced focus CD, but you just give up way too much, add runes on that and you do even worse.

Guardian is fine without perma swiftness, they have a 4 second gap where they move at normal speed.

Every class should get a utility skill that gives 25% movemnt boost, it would be a choise for each player.

i find it really annoying running around as my norn guardian, its my main toon now and it just feels so kitten slow, theres a few speed boons but nothing that lasts long.

I too believe it’s a flaw to make some classes not have a permanent or so speed increase, or make it so the speed increase is reliant on spamming certain buttons.
One main reason I don’t play my Guardian is I don’t want to spam staff skill just for speed.

Never played the game. Perhaps your people need to get out of dismissing everyone as being WoWheads. I love the passive boost on my thief. I HATE crawling around with my guard. And spare me the staff boost. 8 seconds of swift is kitten. And barely a reason to lug the kitten staff around. Movement is kitten when it feels like you are crawling through molasses.

Makes grouping up so much more fun not having people go at comparable speeds. Either the slow person gets left behind, or the zippy one has to constantly wait around, negating the speed buff in the first kitten place.

Well I guess if you are new to these things and aren’t too quick on the uptake, then you might consider it stupid, because you clearly don’t realize that things like the amount of swiftness a class has access to is part of class balacne as much as any other boon or any other skill.

You also obviously don’t do any PvP, if you think that mobility is just there “to get round a little quicker”.

easy permanent swiftness + 4 Movement skills

There seems to be a fair amount of confusion regarding movement speed, the different buffs, and so on. So let me explain.

Ele, Necro, Ranger, and Thief all have signets that grant a passive 25% speed boost (outside combat, I’ll get to that) all the time.

Now, Swiftness is not the same thing, they are completely different animals.
For one, Swiftness isn’t taken away when you enter combat, but it’s temporary (unless you specifically build around making it last longer) and capped at 33%
The passive is on all the time meaning you don’t have to equip certain gear/waste trait points to get it, but you lose it when in combat (when it would be most useful) and capped (I think) at 25%

So making the argument that the other four classes shouldn’t get a passive speed boost because X class can maintain 100% uptime on swiftness is an invalid one.
Because those have to be built to do it, traited to do it, and/or geared for it while those first four merely trade one. single. utility slot. to get it.

I don’t think it’s asking too much for the rest to be given a signet with a passive, it wouldn’t require much if any balance, doesn’t take away your ability to build a 100% uptime swiftness build or waste some of your trait points and a weapon set to do so, but would make half my characters considerably less painful to play.
I love my Guardian but playing her is an exercise in frustration. It’s a miracle I got her to 80. My other 80s? Ele, Ranger, and Thief.

I dislike feeling like I’m a turtle wading through peanut butter.
I dislike having to build my entire character around not moving so slow.

Now, the loss of the passive movement speed when in combat. This is at least as annoying not getting any at all. And the only reason anyone that I’ve talked to has been able to come up with is “fairness in PvP”
Okay, well, if everyone had the option of choosing whether to move 25% faster or take a different skill, there’d be no reason to take it away at all.
There’s not truly a non-idiotic reason even now to be honest though, I chose to trade a utility for speed, but when I get into combat you take that away. Does a random one of my opponents utilities become unusable in combat? That would be “fair”.

I agree the other classes need a passive (preferably via a signet so you don’t have to spend a bunch of trait points to get it) I’d rather they not take it away in combat, as it’s a *tactical choice * I shouldn’t be punished for making.

It’s all about choices, taking Knight gear or Zerker gear for example.
Imagine if the toughness from Knight gear turned off in combat.
That’d be pretty stupid wouldn’t you say?

It’s almost exactly the same thing with the speed boost.
I traded another skill, and thereby WEAKENED myself to get it
And yet my tactical choice is rendered worthless.

If you think through other games in or near the genre, movement speed is usually key for all classes both in and out of combat. Try to sell a pair of boots in D3 for any class without % movement speed and good luck. As things are, there are professions where movement speed is no problem and ones where you don’t feel like playing them because of the lack of speed buffs. Perhaps part of the problem lies in not viewing movement speed as universally necessary, again, both in and out of combat.

Many of you know me as a fanboi who loves this game, but I agree with the OP on this. It’s annoying to travel in a group with everyone moving at different speeds. It doesn’t lend itself to playing with your friends. It’s an oversight on Anet’s part and it should be corrected.

This has nothing to do with mounts or how things are handled in any other game. It’s just silly to have to wait for one straggler, or always be chasing up the tail of a group, losing out on rewards because the event is over before you can catch up. It’s just bad design.

Actually, I don’t like the choice to have a passive 25% skill blocking a skill slot either… After all, out of combat speed is mostly convenience, and personally I don’t like to spend build resources on mere convenience features.

It’s not like we had an overabundance of awesome tactical options in fights even with those slots though…

Each class having a moment buff is not game breaking. It’s a nice thing to have and aids in traveling. Many more MMO’s than WoW incorporate it….all the way back to the original Everquest.

@wintermute
Fair enough, but would you rather have to spend 10-20 trait points into a triat-line you wouldn’t otherwise use for your build, or use a single utility slot?
I’d rather have the traits completely in line with my build instead of spending them to alleviate the tediousness of movement and sacrifice a utility slot, as I find most utilities worthless anyway (at least, the ones that don’t give passive effects)
For me it mostly comes down to most of them being emergency use type stuff, stun breaks and so on, and taking my hand away from movement controls and having to look at the keyboard to find the right key takes too long, as I can only reach 6 possibly 7 without breaking contact with the default hand position (it only takes a second to look and get centered again, but that second is an awfully long time when everything is hitting the fan).
That’s just me and my personal tastes in skills though.

Optimally they could have each class have both options, a signet and a trait, non stacking, so you can use the one that most suites your build tastes. Heck, on my guardian I’d use my elite slot for a signet for a passive speed boost if I could.

This is why i use the elite banner, pick it up, and use the 3 slot skill to give swiftness for 30-45 seconds at a time(cant remember length). Banner last long enough to do this three times and then you have a 30 second cooldown till you can cast banner again.

Sure its hard to fight with the banner but i mostly use this for quick transport and dont bother figting the mobs, they cant catch you anyways. And you can always put it down and then pick it up again.

It applies to party as well so useful in dungeons for skipping mobs on way to boss fights.
