Multiple characters useless
One char per world boss still gives the large chest, just not the guaranteed-rare chest. I rotate alts on mark II if ever starved for dragonite.
But I pretty much only use a char for a given purpose too. World boss commanding/Jumping puzzles (to free-port others with), Mesmer. WvW commanding, Guardian. Dungeons/living story/world boss zerging/general pve, Thief. Fractals, Elementalist. Condi Wurming, Ranger/Necro. Some dungeons/farms, Bomb Engi. WvW Roaming/WvW Zerging/Triple Wurm zerging, Warrior.
Wouldn’t use my thief to command WvW or bring my Guardian into a dungeon, it makes no sense.
Gold’s easy enough to earn already without abusing alts to go around timegates. Maybe your problem is that all of your classes have identical specs (I will guess Zerkeverythinglulz) and are shoehorned into the same purpose, which would obviously mean that all except the one best suited to the role would be redundant. If the usual ‘easily survivable damage dealer’ that gets photocopied across the meta, then it would be necessarily a warrior.
Why would you expect otherwise, if they’re all identical in purpose. If you had a toolbox with 8 hammers of varying quality, you’re not going to do anything else but use the best hammer. If you have a hammer, a screwdriver, a power drill, a wire cutter…

Are you just finding out about this now?
I’ve no problem with it….good luck with your new game. =)
I also have 8 lvl 80’s, and farm nodes is just fantastic.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
Simply put: Arenanet doesn’t want rolling more characters to have too great a mechanical advantage, as it would really unbalance the game and essentially require everyone to have a full sheet of 80s to keep up with the economy.
This was a problem when boss chests first came out, and they changed some things to fix it, in order to ensure that people don’t feel like they have to roll and gear several characters just to enjoy the game and afford basic stuff on the AH.

I have 10 80s, have deleted 5 fully exotic geared 80s, currently working on a new 80.
Since I started doing PvP, I no longer have issues grappling with the limitations of PvE on multiple characters.
Now granted I could have stuck with the initial 5 slots and just made pvp trash alts I could delete any time but I wasn’t into GW2s pvp at the time.
smack..Wut?…smack…smack…
Yeah, this game is very alt-unfriendly despite all the account-bound changes that have been happening.
Of my many issues with GW2, this is not one. One use for alts is to use them for different game modes. I have bunkers and zerkers and would rather have different characters for those types of play than carrying multiple sets of armor.
I agree the nerf to dungeon chests was not fun. Coupled with the champion train nerfs, it herded people into the path of least resistance, commonly known as EotM (which was originally designed as WvW and is now nothing but a PvE karma/loot train in a WvW zone.)
However, I’ve found that my 52 alts are quite useful for farming. 29 are level 80 in at least exotics, and working on my 3rd and 4th set of full ascended.
Well, sort of. Because mostly I’m playing Wildstar for PvE, and logging on GW2 for an hour to farm/do daily and then trying to enjoy what is left of WvW, until that gets to the point where it’s been driven into the dirt and my guild finally realizes it’s time to move on.

I get what you’re saying… I have a mesmer for spvp… cause that’s all I can really use it for since I mainly run wvw on my other characters….
It kinda sucks… But it’s definitely cheaper save transmute stones for looking good in matches.
I have 8 lvl 80’s also… with the cd’s on crafting ascended mats they should all be geared in ascended weapons and armor by next century sometime.
You only need 3 sets of ascended, one per armour class
it really killed my joy with the game with alts.
9 80s and 10th slot for keys.
I used to run cof 1 and 2 7 times a day. then if really felt like farming do another dungeon like ac or se.
but now I barely log on anymore.
You can run the dungeons again and again with different characters in the same day. You’re just not getting any extra reward. So should you get extra reward for using different characters compared to someone who has only one character? Not necessarily. The game could give you that but there’s no particular reason why it should or it shouldn’t. There’s a perfectly reasonable argument that someone with one character should have the same rewards as someone with lots of characters. If you think that you deserve something for leveling up and gearing lots of characters then that’s only your expectation and you might be disappointed.
The game also works better if players spread their attention to different activities rather than maximizing loot from a single repeated activity, even if players don’t realize that.

That person put in more time and effort for their extra characters though. They should be rewarded for that. If Anet wants to make everyone equal in certain aspects of the game, that’s a very slippery slope indeed. Where does it stop then?

I have 13 80s .. and also farm the heck out of all those rich platinum and iron ores
I just hate Mordremoth now because of what he did to “Thistlereed Waypoint”
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.
I also have 8 level 80s. I find I play pretty much 2. My PvE/PvP character, and my WvW character.
Now, having said that, I’m thinking back to every MMO I’ve ever played, and honestly, I played 1 main character and 1 alt. Any other characters I had were strictly for leveling up so I could have that class maxed, and then I would go back to my main.
In fact, I would claim that practically every MMO player does this. I’ve never met anyone who consistently played 8 characters regularly (after all are at level cap). You level all classes to max, then you pick your main and secondary and focus on those. You’d go crazy otherwise.
I find GW2 is in line with every other MMO out there in terms of alts. If anything one notch higher because of all of the account-bound features.
So you can’t farm the same dungeon 8 times. Whatever…
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
A lot of people say harvesting is boring .. but beside the nice money i make with it
i also simply like the fact that it really brings me to play all of my characters nearly
every day for a while ^^

I have 9 characters at 80. 1 Main and 2 alts. The rest is just to store items on i don´t use often.
Main used for dungeons/world bosses/WvW/PvP
Alts used for Dungeons if my main class is not asked for but my alt class is.
and for PvP so i dont Always play 1 class.
It is a bit of a waste but its a game.
I guess it depends on what your favorite in-game activities are. I love experimenting with builds, seeing what this profession or that can do in different situations, and exploring. So I’m a confirmed alt-aholic.

I have 9 level 80s. One is retired now and is acting as a mule, but I try to play a different profession every day, which means I don’t play the same char more often than once every 8 days, except my guardian who is my char for dungeons.
I find that frequent swapping changes up the gameplay enough to keep it more interesting.
I have 25 characters. 17 of them are 80 (soon to be 18) and I enjoy having alts. Right now I have four of those alts just hanging around with gathering boosters around the trees in Malchors. I log in to them a few times a day and try for a few foxfire clusters. I have a couple at jumping puzzle chests. I used to keep low level characters there to try to get silver doubloons.
And I enjoy playing a ranger of characters with a range of looks.
