I’d like to propose the removal or at least a big decrease in the restrictions in the musical instruments. There appear to be quite a few limitations (mentioned here in the “Instrument Quirks” section) and they are even different between instruments. Allow me to represent the thought of our dear ANet member Cody:

I think it’s generally a good thing to have more music in Tyria for people—performers and listeners alike—to enjoy, by whichever means is most desirable to the performer.

If so, then I can’t see why there would be such harsh restrictions on the in-game music that is played. If I may once again refer you to gw2mb, this time to the archive, you’ll notice that four of the top-five rated songs aren’t actually playable in-game. And the sad part is that most of them are really close to being playable, but the restriction is just a little too harsh.

Removing the restrictions would in my eyes just open up new possibilities for yet more enjoyable music, and wouldn’t force producers of the music to make special, in-game versions of songs, that are either very restricted or just slowed down to compensate.

I hope that at least it’s taken into serious consideration, and I’d love to get some discussion about this in case there are problems with removing the restrictions that I’ve overlooked.

PS. I’m sure this has been brought up before, but for some reason when using the search bar in the audio section, searching for “Harp” brings up literally nothing, even though I’m looking at three topics with “Harp” in the title when I remove the search…

If i understand correctly, music box runs commands that play scripted sons using your charachters instruments. Isnt tat botting? Is it even allowed?

The quote I used in my original post actually links to the exact topic there Anet confirmed macros for musical instruments is allowed. (Note: They are not allowed for anything that gives a player an unfair advantage of others!)

Also, this isn’t just an issue for instruments running macros but also for players playing by hand. Some instruments have a 1-second barrier between switching between pitches, meaning you can’t play a low note followed by a high note within a 1 second window. You also can’t play the same note twice within a one second period on other instruments. It varies a lot between instruments!

Oh, cool! Didnt know about that.

With instruments ive found that the lag i always find in pvp is also present in all aspects of the game. Playing a song is impossible unless you are not listening to it, or unless you have an uncanny talent to dissociate what you play from what you listen to. As ive played many other games and never found this to be a problem, i blame it on this game. Can somebody else confirm?

Lag does indeed cause some issues, but the main issues with most of these instruments are the cooldowns for certain actions. As I mentioned earlier, some instruments have cooldowns for changing the pitch. Instruments also have a cooldown for playing the same note in “quick” succession (~0.5-1s), but how long “quick” is varies between instruments. It’s easy to hit those limits by hand, especially with the worse instruments.
