After playing since the 3 day head start, I finally got my first precursor dropped from killing an enemy. It’s not a great one (Rage), but it was cool to finally get one to drop without having to use the toilet. The funny thing is, after all the time I spent in Orr and other level 80 areas, the drop occurred from killing the Cave Troll in Queensdale (a Vet now, not even a champ). So, it goes to show, it can happen anywhere, any time.

BTW, my magic find was at 337% at the time, so that may have figured into it.

I only got The Howler once, but sold it immediately. Must have made someone happy heh

I’m sure it did! I’m still waiting for a Dusk drop… I made Sunrise last year, and have been waiting forever because I want to make Eternity (my main character uses a GS). I have a Gift of Fortune and Gift of Mastery, so I could make the Legendary now, but I think I’ll wait in the hopes that the RNG Gods smile on me.

I have yet to see a precursor, myself, and I’ve been playing since official opening day.

Let’s say, for the sake of argument, the drop chance on a precursor is .0000001 now we factor in that massive magic find of ~300%. You just upped your chance to .0000003 Grats!

This is what people don’t understand about these MMO/RPG magic find systems, your massive chance increases result in a puny difference.

I won’t go into how horribly bad the loot system is in this game, it’s all Toil based. You have to work to get anything since your odds of anything useful and meaningful dropping are terribly, horribly out of whack and greatly unsatisfying.

Gratz on your precursor. Time does not tell you how active player are when they are on. The drop rate for precursor will always be low but if you are doing mob style events often you have a increase chance of getting one. Gotten 4 precursors to drop in ~5000 hours. In wvw you can kill ~100 mobs/people a hour(havoc mostly camps), when orr was active ~50mobs per event and in pve ~30mobs per dungeon. With a drop rate under 1% the more mobs you kill the more chances you get.

Then you are lucky. 2+ years, more playtime then you i think (6600 hours – some afk of course), 0 precursors.

The real reason I posted though was to let everyone know it can happen ANYWHERE at ANY TIME. I guess it’s like getting the Golden Ticket to Willy Wonka’s factory.

If I get a free range exotic (as opposed to high level map completion exotics) I feel like it must be due to a bug.

Congratulations! They do, indeed, drop anywhere. I got Dusk off a level 6 Raptor Hatchling in Metrica some time ago. Should have waited to sell it until today, lol! Oh, well. Got Energizer off a Boss, though.

Congrats! That’s wonderful. I’ve yet to get any precursor drop in nearly 2 years (have my gifts ready) , but this shows there is hope anywhere in game. Glad to hear that you did tho!

Whats a precursor? Are they not a myth?
