TLDR: Play smart, save up enough, to prevent feeling burnt up, avoid raging and disappointment and maybe your goal can be achieved. Have GW2 been a sub-to-play game, and P2W, I would have spent more than $100 for the year that I played this game.

Just want to share my “achievement” of getting my Legendary. I know some of you have made more than one, I have seen them myself, and that’s awesome. Well, I finally made mine. Some of info I’d like to share:

  • I don’t farm AP
  • I do Daily religiously, just 5 of PvE daily, I don’t do PvP daily. If I have accidentally done more than the minimum required, that’s a bonus
  • I do Monthly religiously, just the minimum. If I have accidentally done more than the minimum required, that’s a bonus
  • I don’t buy Gems with real money, I only bought two Bank Expansion tabs
  • I did convert my gold to Gems when I needed the Bank Expansion
  • I don’t stay in Frostgorge and farm all day, nor do I stay in Queensdale to do the same
  • I do jump from World Bosses to World Bosses, but only when Guildies are on. If not, I just do what I want to do, which is anything under the Tyrian sun.
  • I don’t grind dungeons, nor WvWvW. I join some if an opportunity present itself.
  • I don’t grind L.S., though I do some of them if I like the content, but totally ignore them if I don’t like it.
  • I have never felt forced using the Gem store to make me accomplish some tasks, whether PvE, PvP, or WvW.
  • The RNG god has never been kind to me, I bought my Precursor
  • I have tried my luck at the forge a lot of times too, and called Orr my home way back release till Anet released Lost Shore patch and nerfed Orr. I got robbed of my home, and become a wanderer. I stay either at Hoelbrak but mostly at Rata Sum.

One whole year.

Some will consider that a really long time (for those who got theirs 3mos of the game release), some short (for those who still can’t even see the light of the tunnel). But I find the “fun” with the journey, rather than just getting the reward. Now I look forward tp getting an Ascended Armor ^^ (if that ever comes to light) so I need to start saving up again

There’s nothing fun about making legendaries T_T

I understand some don’t like it, but I take my path in strides. In fact, I never planned to make a Legendary till Anet decided they’ll make it Ascended. That changed my mind, and I always think of saving up whenever I play, and focus on what I need and ignore my wants. So what I’m saying is, I played this game without being burnt out due to grind, disappointment, or rage (except on few patches I don’t agree) and only doing what I find fun to do…

TLDR: Play smart = farm as hard as you can before ANet nerfs it, or flip items on TP, or gamble via Mystic toilet.

Looking at your post history, I see you did a lot of Orr farming back in the days, which gave you 200g in some 2-3 months so I get a general feel for your playing habits (plus you enjoy farming). Not saying that there is anything wrong with that, just pointing it out there.
Sometimes, people just forgot how hard they farmed, and are now are in cruise control mode because of all their accumulated wealth.

In any case, congrats on your legendary.

Indeed, I did say that on my list, that I did called Orr my home. I did FARM Orr back in the days, but for me, it never felt farming. I loved the idea of the urgency with Orr events, always popping up and swarming with mobs (which many say are hard and/or annoying) and it felt more about socializing (people back then, talks a lot in map chat while doing event).

I lost my way when FotM was released, funneling players to FotM and leaving my beloved Orr barren. As far as accumulated wealth, well, I won’t say I never got any but I only earned what most people earned doing events back in the days and compared to Frostgorge/Dead Eye/Scarlet/SSC+settler buff farming, my earning will prove insignificant (my guildies makes 100g per day at Frostgorge)…

Congratulations!

Well, if you dont feel anything (bored, annoyed, elated, suprised, enraged, etc) then you simply ignore the post and move on to another. Isn’t that one of the reasons why a lot of posts have a lot of views and no replies?

The point of a game is to have fun while playing it. Do you have fun not spending money on cool things such as armor skins, new weapons, backpieces, and other cool miscellaneous items? Because I sure don’t. I don’t want to waste my time saving up money like I do in real life… I play games to escape from real life, not have another real life where I save up money for retirement. That’s why I decided I never wanted to make a legendary: or even start one for that matter.

I’m going to give the opposite response to your original post: Play games the way they were meant to be played. Play for fun.

Mine took like half a year. Didn’t really rush anything, just did daily stuff such as Dungeons (mainly CoF, and HoW), Orichalcum/Ancient wood runs and Dragons. Sometimes I farmed beast blood in frostgorge. This was before champ trains, dragon timers and such. I got a Precursor drop from chest though, which I sold and bought Spark for 150g. The good old days. I didn’t really work towards it at all till I got Precursor but I have a habit of hording everything I find. At this point I realized I have enough crap rotting in my bank to make another one without too much money needed. I’d recommend people to just do what they do and just save/horde stuff till you end up with a precursor somehow. XD

Great post OP and gratz on making your legendary. This is probably the best way to play this game. It’s certainly close to how I play it.

I think I got most of the stuff for my legendary not by getting achievements for myself but by helping guildies get their achievements.

  • I did convert my gold to Gems when I needed the Bank Expansion

This guy is like my twin. Everything except the second-last point, I refuse to buy a precursor.

I have been tempted many times, and could have bought one before the disequilibrium (while there were relatively cheap, by comparison), but I’m a person of principle, and refused to cheapen myself by going back on one. Buying something that was someone else’s good luck isn’t the way to earn part of a legendary item. I want to earn my legendary every step of the way, I have so far and some gifts I’ve had for quite a while (two of them for over a year now) and I’m waiting to see what the precursor crafting is going to be like on my resources.

Yeah, I have seen many posts about P2W or how they want only BiS (I showed in vid that I even use Lv78 zerker armor and starter underwater mask) to have fun. While fun is subjective for everyone, my TLDR is simple: I got my legendary, while having fun doing stuff that I want to do, without feeling burn out (though I rage from time to time, but not about the Legendary or grind or fluff).

snip

Gratz bro.

I wish you all the luck as well, yours isn’t so far behind. If anything, map completion was my easiest task (I have completed it with my Thief loooong ago)

snip

This guy is like my twin. Everything except the second-last point, I refuse to buy a precursor.

I have been tempted many times, and could have bought one before the disequilibrium (while there were relatively cheap, by comparison), but I’m a person of principle, and refused to cheapen myself by going back on one. I wish you all the luck mate. I have waited for the drop to come, and the more I waited the price went up. I did put a buy order about 60g cheaper than was listed and it came thru.

I am actually thinking of making a Twilight because I have enough Onyx Lodestones, enough karma, globs, coins, and I only need the precursor. So if it drops, or for some reason the price decrease, then I’ll probably make another and give it to my Warrior.

I didn’t use the word “fun” in my original post because that is easy to misinterpret. However, I did clarify that I do stuff that “I like”, even if it also subjective like the word “fun”, for me, it is clearer that what “I like may not be other’s like” . Also, in succeeding replies, I have clarified that I do/did have fun doing the stuff that I like.

As for skin, three reasons why I never bought skins:
a) Town-clothes only (for Town Clothers)
b) I never liked majority, except for Phalanx Heavy and Viper Medium
c) For the two skins that I finally liked, I only like “parts” of the armor. I can’t buy the full sets, pay the full price, for only one or a couple piece that I like in that set.

Also like you, I never decided to get the legendary at the early part of the game. However, my decision changed when Anet made the transition to Ascended. Having experienced how to make an Ascended weapon, if ever Anet decided to make a new tier, I at least am sure that my weapon will be always be BiS (I did explained this on my YT video description).

As for others’ well wishes, thanks guys

I’m like you OP, playing at my own pace. Unfortunately, I am also an altoholic and have 8 characters, 4 of them at 80. And I didn’t get my first 80 until at least 4-5 months after I started playing (BWE 2). I enjoy playing all professions & creating new characters. Since I don’t always play my main, but often goof around on level 40s, I’m not making nearly the gold I could be. I’m not poor but have no Ascended or Legendaries. I’ve often thought about investing some time into grinding away toward one, but then I get sidetracked having fun actually playing and I can’t bring myself to do it. Meh….

Congrats on your legendary!

For mine, I actually got a different precursor (The Chosen) than the one I wanted (Storm). So I sold the shield and bought Storm.

Other than that the only other thing I purchased on the BLT was was 60ish Powerful Bloods and 30 some Elaborate Totems.

Like you, I enjoyed the journey toward my legendary. I did grind for some of it at times, but it was because I wanted to. It didn’t feel like work.

I just got Rodgort’s Flame out of the toilet and will work slowly toward Rodgort. It may take years, but that is OK, it will be fun when I finally get it.

Great advice, and always remember you are on your own time schedule, no need to feel rushed- but that doesn’t mean procrastinate!
Get on do what you can and you will achieve your goal.
Im nearly done with my second legendary and Im going at my own pace, doing my daily everyday including my pvp daily, and I do many steps listed above in the OP.
I don’t plan on getting any more after this though, 2 is enough for me.
I bought my second precursor since it is listed for under 100g -The Bard. The first one I planned on farming for the gold but luckily my sister made it in the MF and that helped me out a bit- she wasn’t even after The Legend.

Currently working on my second legendary, must say that precursor is a pain, specially since Im now going for the most expensive one (750-800 gold , been up to 850). Im sure the prices will drop after scavenger comes, (i hope). It is a pain, but with the new rewards to dungeons and champion bags, I must say I feel it a lot less, since I can legitimately ‘farm’ my way there while feeling im getting somewhere (I hate RNG)

I think the OP is saying that people don’t really have to “farm/grind” for a Legendary. That you can still get it by just playing and enjoying the game anyway you want to. I don’t own a legendary but I do own several expensive exotic weapons/skins and I’ve made 6 Lv80s in full Exo/Asc gear..plus the mini pets like Tequatl, Molten Firestorm, etc.

All of those I’ve obtained from August 2012~November 2012 (barely); August 2013~present.

Since I’ve been playing my Guardian alt a lot I decided to buy the Torch Precursor since it’s cheap and the coolest looking legendary for the Scepter/Torch build I’m using. Now I can just keep hording stuff like I been doing till then while using the Precursor in battle.

I don’t usually use Torch on my Guardian, but now the you put it that way, I’m considering it too

Your story is exactly the same as mine, except I bought a few gems for toon slots and bank space.
Grats on the legendary.

Tnx. Good for you, I always wanted to buy gems but unfortunately, only few items in the store made me wanna buy. However, I do want to support the game, so I’ll probably buy a character slot. Problem is, it’s probably cheaper to just buy another copy of game (in terms of support) to use as char slot/bank than a character slot in-game ^^…

Meh….

Yeah, it’s those “other stuff” that gets your attention away, which is actually kinda good since you dont get burned out. But man, 8 chars, that’s a lot.

Well done, could you share the exact “/age” of your character(s)? I feel like im far behind with my 927 hours of gameplay since release, seeing so many people with their legendaries, but im not even half way done getting my bolt…

My play time is north of 2.8k hrs played (~6hrs/day). But I’d say that about 20% – 40% of that time, I am afk while watching my favorite shows (night news, Walking Dead, Grimm, Person of Interest, Big Bang Theory, The Voice, America’s Got Talent, Haven, etc). TV shows compete for my gaming time A LOT of times, I would be logged in, but AFK. However, in the morning, I’ll be playing about an hour before going to work. Then after going home and dinner, I’d be logged in around 6:00pm till about 10pm, or 12am when Friday. I also play about 6hrs on weekends intermittently, in between chores and meals, groceries and what nots.

Good luck man, you are so lucky to get it. I saw one owner of that Legendary and it looks awesome.

Why do others get so lucky to get a pre haha. Gz though mate, two legendary is an enormous achievement.

Going for the Staff? I look forward to hunt too, but I doubt it’ll be anywhere near “cheap”, you know how Anet is

just got my 1st precursor today with 2 rare weapons and 2 rare equipments

and its the colossu the hammer one. guess i can finally see a light of me holding one legendary after 1 year.

But, if you get the Juggernaut, what will happen to your precious dye?

One year?
Found a precursor 4 months ago, sold it on TP.
Then spent 2.5 months farming and selling ingots and planks = Legendary BOUGHT and obtained without the year long grief.

Lucky for you, you found a precursor. Like I said, RNG is not good for me. And my year long journey is not a grief

edit: I have to -snip- other reply, since forum won’t let me
