OK, so first the tl;dr version:

Enjoying it so far. A few things are a little janky or annoying, but overall I’m much more pleased than not.

Now for the deets, good and bad:

Bad:
Cost of Identification:
Simply put, the cost is too high. If I’m going to get charged about 14 silver to ID just 8 items, and then have most of them still just be crappy greens, I’m now operating at a loss. Simply selling them is not optimal as there might be necessary things in there and same goes for salvaging without ID. I don’t mind there being a cost, but as of right now 50 copper per would be way easier of a pill to swallow than the 1.7 silver. That adds up way too fast and i don’t think its fair to expect people to need to grind gold to find out they are holding into mostly junk items.

Mount control:
Maybe it was intentional, but getting the mount to move/turn easily is a bit of a pain and frankly it gets to be a bigger pain when trying to run it up some ramp which it then gets itself stuck on the top lip of because it can’t seem to lift its feet?

Opening Sequence:
Neat, but at points can be a little brutal. While i am all for this being level 80 content that is meant to challenge, we also know that there will be brand new players that don’t have a clue that will jump right into PoF. Tone down that first instance a little bit or your brand new players might hang it up before ever getting into the story.

The Good:

The Hydra
Totally a personal thing, but I was so giddy to fight a Hydra and then was both giddy and kinda salty (in a good way) when just as I remember from gw1 a few of his hydra friends ninja’d up behind me and started to roll me. I got away, but the fight was crazy fun.

Organic/Reflexive Happening:
Another fun thing I experienced was by the refugee camp. An event started and me and 3 other people that where there (without saying a word) popped up on our mounts to literally leap into combat. It was nice seeing that unfold in that way and the event itself felt well balanced, but maybe have the enemies come from 3 directions instead of two very visible and predictable ones.

Other:
Now while I was hoping for a bit more of a “wow this feels familiar” kind of like when I first saw certain places in core tyria, I do find that I like some of the call backs to some things from Nightfall. I’m hoping for more familiar areas later on, and I’m also hoping for more “vabbi-esque” armor. I’m sure I’ll have more feedback the more I play.

Also, regarding the ID mechanic:

Why? I mean, ultimately why not just let us have stacked unknowns until we got back to someplace and could open them and see them for ourselves if they are just going to be normal loot anyway. I mean ultimately aren’t you just making us pay way too much to discover that we have junk anyway with an occasional “yes you might need or want this”? Seems a little mean to stick such a costly barrier on something we’ve had for free all these years the more i think about it.

Ugh, I loathe paying huge sums to find junk. I was rather surprised at the silver for a kit myself. It made me not want to buy the kit just for that alone. If we could get the kit in other ways like exploring or whatever, sure, but pure hatred of paying for junk just isn’t something I would consider.

Just like HoT I won’t play much new content in BETA/Demo mode. I like to explore with my own characters and learn at release. I went in for about an hour and enjoyed it so far. Graphics pretty nice. Raptor mount is pretty slick (I really loathed adding mounts but becoming sold on it so far). I cannot wait for release to play the whole thing. Looting the greens and such is interesting. Alot of fire laying around so take your sunscreen :P

identification:

a) those items are pretty much ONLY to salvage. there is apperently a chance to get rare skins out of it if you identify them. but salvaging them gives you A LOT of materials. so I dont agree at all with your point.

b) i am pretty sure the mount control is intentional. It should not feel like controlling our character. You are riding a mount. I never rode a horse, but I am pretty sure it is not exactly like just moving faster than walking/running myself.

c) not sure what you are talking about the first story instance. what exactly is hard about this instance? the trash mobs before the boss? the boss itself that you dont even have to kill, but just have to survive and its only skill is a extremely long shown skill that will teach new players that its effect on the ground means danger to yourself?

I expected a MUCH harder boss when the herald turned up. compared to some of the ls3 bosses this one is a joke.

That’s how it designed. it adds weight to the control[s], most people I find in game and on reddit like it this way. The animation is quite smooth and crisp actually.

I’m in agreement with him. They actually feel like mounts; not some typical mmo super speed skin.

In regards to the raptor getting stuck, you need to hold space longer for the mount to jump farther. I was having the same issue initially when I was just tapping space instead of holding it for the first minute I used the mount.

For me the opening sequence and all mobs in the demo including the hydra felt way too easy. One could argue the opening sequence being fine as it’s for people getting into the game for the first time. I picked a class I’ve never played and spammed skills off cd and cleared it just fine. However, if it’s made any easier then we’re going to get the same degree of difficulty as the level 1 introductory story instance. Something too easy is a big of a turn off, just as something that’s too hard is for some players.

One criticism I have is the rule breaker debuff. It does absolutely nothing. Perhaps it’s not available in the preview but if that’s not the case then this should be addressed so mounts aren’t allowed in areas where they shouldn’t be. I’ve already seen something similar that disables mounts outright in places such as Noran’s Safe Room. If I had to guess there may be some fun interaction with the debuff that anet wants to save for the actual release. I hope this is the case.

the turn controls I can live with but it getting stuck at the top of a ramp because there is a one inch lip at the top is broken a pathing issue. not a learn to jump one. We’re talking walking up a slope.

And no, the unidentified stuff isn’t just for salvaging as there are collection specific items that you can only get from identifying it from one of those caches. Furthermore, it still doesn’t address the very real fact that we are being charged in game silver for something that we could just do the moment we had something in hand before. If they insist on the mechanic being in the game then the least they can do is tweak it so I’m not bleeding coins just to complete a spec collection.

As for the first story step, yes yes, many of us vets can deal with it just fine. But we’ve also been playing for a while and have developed certain kinds of muscle memory and reactions to certain tells. New players literally jumping right into PoF have not, and I promise you that fight will be very frustrating for them. Core game mechanics can still vex them at times.

The mount needs emotes, especially /dance and /sit (They even have the animation for /sit. they just need to tie it to an emote instead of just being an idle animation)

Love: The Hydra. Having the heads flop around bleeding out was inspired. I smile every time I kill one. Only possible improvemnt I can think of their is that the heads grow a new body instead of eventually dying. But it’s a quibble.

Hate: Mount size for the bigger races needs tuning. Not a single Charr or Norn on a raptor that I saw looked proportional.

Mob difficulty: Veterans, outside of the Forged Colonnade (or was it Cannonade) seemed adequately dangerous. Trash mobs are still trash mobs. The forged mob I just mentioned was far to slow and clumsy to be any threat to my thief. That being said the only times I’ve downed were on the angry quaggan champ and on purpose in the quicksand.

Positive: The map is lovely, full of things to see and hear, what I played was big and fun with events and fights.
The major positive is the music, I love it and how it changes into real battle music when things get intense, it matches the mood and really pulls me into what’s happening.
The mount is great, I love how it controls and the ease of use it has. I can’t wait to try out the other ones when it releases.
Negative: Performance seems to suffer randomly and overall feels a bit “slower” than the rest of the game. It is a beta so I suspect that will cleaned up a bit before release, at least I hope so.

I imagine the rule breaker could eventually tie into some sort of jail system like what is in Rata Sum. Well I hope that at least as its much more immersive that way.

As to identification, I didn’t try that out (mainly just rode around on the raptor for a bit and logged off), but if it is 1.7 silver each, that is a bit steep. Maybe 1 silver would be a good price though?

And the first instance was pretty easy, just rather long compared to other instances we’ve had. I didn’t even bother to change the default mesmer build for it, completed it no problem.

Very fun so far, just done the opening instance, was not hard at all but fun, and liked the different mount animations, and the speed you dismount and mount, other games its so slow.

Performance is great so far too.

Since money spent in the Demo is recovered, I identified about 15 (or so) Unidentifed whatever-they-are-calleds, and acquired 8 of the weapons for the collection. Didn’t seem too bad, as far as that collection went.

I believe Magic Find plays a part in indentification, so maybe using boosters, food, etc. would be helpful.

I enjoyed my time in the map. Crashed several times at first, but later, not at all. I’m looking forward to release; hopefully I can scrounge up the cash needed to purchase.

Thanks, Dev Team, for all your hard work.

To be fair, getting gold these days is really easy and with the amount of new gold-sources added they just need some gold-sinks i guess. Just through doing the dailies you get enough gold to identify over 100 pieces of equipment. Doing daily t4s gives you gold for another 2 stacks to identify at least, and thats just the average raw gold you get there.

I think they also did this to reduce inventory clutter a bit. Instead of having tons of single equipment pieces after playing for an hour, they now stack up nicely. You can also directly salvage then and wont have you inventory cluttered with green sigils and runes, although you might probably identify them since they can give new skins aswell.

It took me about 10 minutes of trying various things to get how the mount worked. Once I did, it’s fine. It’s those 10 minutes of frustration in the demo that need cleaning up. A quick tutorial message, hey, dummy, use the space bar, would be immensely helpful.

I have my doubts about the opening fight sequences as well. My demo character was decked out, in a way my regular characters aren’t and probably never will be. I can’t imagine doing that fight on any of my level 80 characters as they stand now.

If you mean that opening fight to be a discriminating gateway, you’ve succeeded. There’s no point in buying the expansion when I know I could never get through that gate and on to the rest of the content.

So, in that regard, the Demo was very helpful in helping me make up my mind.

If by decked out you mean in exotics gear then you can already get that within a reasonable time frame of casual play. Lets say you’re a new player who bought POF and didn’t have the time to get exotics. When you purchase POF you get a level 80 boost. When you confirm the boost on a character in addition to the auto level and waypoints, you also receive a full set of exotic gear. That includes accessories, back piece, amulet and rings that are slotted as well.

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Level-80_Boost

Yes it’s not marauders stats but for new players you’ll have better survivability with the set of Soldier’s gear (Rabid if necro, Valkyrie if thief).

I’m very confused by this statement. Exotics are baseline gear for level 80s. As in by the time you hit 80 you should have a decent set of gear that crafting can easily top off to level 80 exotics, or enough gold to simply buy level 80 exotics off the trading post. Neither the gear nor the runes or sigils are terribly expensive even for a fresh 80.

Ascended is nice and all but isn’t really necessary to do anything in this game, other than higher level fractals. I found the opening instance fights to be pretty standard fare.

Parrish if you really are struggling with the game that much, feel free to message/mail me in game I’ll glady lend you any help I can. I’m fairly casual these days, playing mostly on the weekends.

One more small gripe, and admittedly it could have just been horribly bad timing, but I think maybe it wasn’t has something to do with the respawn rate of some of the mobs and some of their pathing.

I was out by the hp challenge in the mid-north section of desert sand and found myself fighting a roaming band of forged, two hydra and frankly ungodly amount of sand sharks and a pack of those dog things that are invulnerable half the time. Thankfully I have a good amount of kiting and stealth on the thief I was using, but I came close to getting downed a few times at this point on the map. Prior to that I was caught out there by the champ hell hyena creature that laughs at your attempts to kite him while also trying to fend off a similar cache of mobs.

I think a few eels jumped in a t one point and ultimately I just kept dodging and randomly hitting things hoping not to die, but yeah. Seemed a bit over abundant in that one spot enemy wise.
