Ok so I’m waiting for LS S2 and have nothing to do so i decided to get as close as I can to the Guild Wars 2 Copies Sold.

So what I did is gather up all NCsoft’s Earning reports for GW2
Q2 2012 25,800,000
Q3 2012 22,900,000
Q4 2012 107,000,000
Q1 2013 32,800,000
Q2 2013 25,800,000
Q3 2013 22,900,000
Q4 2013 32,000,000
Q1 2014 24,500,000

So the last number of copies sold ArenaNet has given us was the anniversary of the game last year in august. That number was 3.5 Million. August is around the end of Q2 of last year. I added up all the revenue they made up to Q2 and divided that number until I got 3.5 million. That number was $60.

So what that means is each person spends around $60 on the game. Which make sense because People always need extra character slots and all that stuff.

Now to get my final result I added up all the numbers of the earning reports. Divided that number by 60 and got 4,895,000 copies sold.

Now this is a prediction but it makes sense because were almost to the second anniversary bash and according to the results almost to 5 million copies. So maybe they want to release that number there. Because they announce 3.5 million I mean why would they announce 4 million. Second I see a lot of new players and the game seems to have a stable population so it would have to see more than 4 million. Plus they said 3.5 million+ copies

Idk guys what do you think? It was kinda interesting to me and made a lot of sense.

Can’t wait until Season 2 gonna be awesome.

You completely forgot china where the game just released. I’m sure they sold at least a million boxes there. However the boxes sell there for like $5 so their profits from that are much lower, however they tend to spend more in the gem shop so the profits there are higher.

It is probably safe to assume they will announce it when they hit 5 million sales, so we can probably say they are still under 5 million.

I’m not sure you can take total revenue and divide it by 60 to get the number of copies sold. I’m sure some of that revenue is from Gem sales….

How on Earth did you conclude, just like Inculpatus cedo mentions, that to receive the number of boxes/virtual copies sold is to divide the total revenue by 60 dollars?

They mentioned it on many occassions in 2013 reports that since 2013, the vast majority of revenue was from gem sales, not box/virtual game sales.

The conclusion is wrong, I’m afraid.

To give you a more logical finding, China sold approx. 500.000 copies + 3.5 mln copies in 2013’s anniversary in the West. These are the only safe numbers ( which don’t include incorrect asumptions as the one you’ve taken above ). Therefore, the number of copies sold is presumably around 4 – 4.2 mln copies ( as some reports say there were more than 500.000 copies sold in China, possibly 600-650.000 ).

These were the approximate dates and estimated numbers they released.
25/08/12: 1 mil – Preorder numbers announced
11/09/12: 2 mil – Press release
15/01/13: 3 mil – Press release
28/08/13: 3.5+ mil – 1 year anniversary

Plot a graph and tell me what you think.
Above excludes the Chinese release, though.

Demonts, look at the income numbers from quarter to quarter and year to year as published by NCSoft in 2014.

You will see that income dropped dramatically from 2013 to 2014 by almost 80 per cent ( includes copies sold + gems, which make for approx. 75 percent of income for GW2 ).

Yes, it means the game is dying, which is pretty much what most of the people feel like about the game from late 2013 until now.

The quarterly numbers the OP used give a total of 155.7m for 2013 and 113.5m for 2014. That’s not even close to an 80% drop. So where are you getting these numbers?

Also, where are you getting the 75% figure? And what is the other 25%? And why would income somehow not count towards the profits?

Yes, it means the game is dying, which is pretty much what most of the people feel like about the game from late 2013 until now.

Oh come on. If you look at the numbers the OP presented, the largest one is due to the release of the game. After that, it’s been pretty consistent. If the game was dying, you’d see a constant decrease in the numbers. Instead, you can clearly see that they fit nicely between 22m and 33m. In fact, the median is 25.8m.

Maybe it’s because I’m not real good at math like some people but to me,
Q1 2013 32,800,000
Q2 2013 25,800,000
Q3 2013 22,900,000
Q4 2013 32,000,000
Total for 2013: 113,500,000 is definitely above dying. Excerpt for Q4 in 2102, there is a steady 22 to 32 million per quarter. It’s fluctuating around those numbers. If it was dying, wouldn’t it be decreasing?
