Hey

So I’m about to start playing the game and I’m not sure what race/profession to start with.

I’m leaning towards making a Human Female, most probably Warrior, but I keep reading that Warrior is kinda broken right now.

What professions are fun to level and play in general? I’m leaning more towards a melee character but I’m not sure what to go with.

Also, is leveling a Human fun or are there more fun leveling areas for different races?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi there and welcome the guild wars!

Warrior is a great class to start with as they tend to have a forgiving hp pool and easy skill rotations. I would say the polar opposite would be elementalist which is a bit overwhelming with the multiple attunements and keybindings required.

Race rarely makes a difference except for an awkward period of time where norn transformations were used as a fiery greatsword replacement. All the starter areas are pretty cool, my personal favorite being the slyvari. I however am bias as I love tattoos and norns are the only race with tattoos.

As for melee, every class generally has close and far range combats and both will be useful. Some melee focused classes carry a spare range weapon for safe tagging of world bosses and some range focus classes opt for melee weapons for dungeon runs because of the higher damage.

This question is kind of impossible to answer. What is “fun” is far too subjective. I’d personally say engineer (more specifically scrapper, since you were interested in melee. Hammer scrapper is kittening amazing), but judging by the fact that it is the least played profession, I’m in the minority.

You can level in any area as any race. The only difference is the first part of the personal story, but I don’t know if I’d base my choice of race on that.

Good luck!

Since ‘fun’ is entirely a personal view not sure how others can tell you whether your view of ‘fun’ coincides with theirs.

Personally I much prefer non-human races in most games, often I love the ‘halfling’ races like Asura in this one, or beasts like Charr. I find humans generally boringinly rendered, at times embarrassingly so, and many seem to play female humans in this game then give them movie-star hairdos and wear the skimpiest of clothing possible .. I guess it shows a large demographic the game appeals to.

Racial skills are entirely ignoreable, Anet deliberately made them less potent that skills chosen/earned while playing.

No idea if Warrior is ‘broken’ or not, it’s not a class I often play in MMOs, I prefer ranged .. eZmode Ranger FTW! .. or casters and in GW2 I love the Mesmer as it’s a play-style I’ve not really found in any other RPG, MMO or offline.

Welcome to the game!

Most classes have a “viable” melee option, so just go with your gut. If it helps, read up a little bit about each class (and possibly their elite specialisations) on the GW2 Wiki http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page

Fun is absolutely a matter of play-style. If you’ve played other RPGs, I recommend listing what you’ve enjoyed before because I’m sure somebody will be able to compare GW2 professions to them for you

Here’s a quick breakdown of what I think classes are about (mainly from their profession mechanic):

-Elementalist: Master of elements, requires good skill management/memory for skills. They have 5 different weapon skills for each attunement (fire, air, water, earth).
-Mesmer: Illusionist, uses clones to deceive.
-Necromancer: User of death magic, minion master, has a second health pool when using the F1 skill death shroud.
-Ranger: Archer, hunter, pet master.
-Engineer: Alchemist, uses tool-kits which give a variety of alternate weapon skills.
-Thief: Stealth, high burst class
-Warrior: Weapons master with a generous helping of burst
-Guardian: Supporty/utility class, but still strong in the DPS department
-Revenant: (not super familiar with this one yet) but seems to be DPS-y with a good amount of support. Heal, Elite and Utility skills are changed depending on which hero you are channeling (possible to change between 2 out of a choice of 4).

As for race, it changes personal story, overall aesthetic (often considered the most important), starter map and a few (underpowered) racial skills. Once again, maybe using the wiki to find a bit of lore will give you a better feel about the races.

Good luck!

They’re all fun, and all classes have the ability to go melee or ranged. All classes can heal, tank and dps.

That’s what I love about GW2, is the diversity of the classes. (Of course, some classes heal better than others, but all classes have the ability to heal).

Just choose the one that is most appealing to you.

I mean in MMO, I usually like to play healer, but I kind of hate healing on GW2 lol… not gonna lie. It’s more challenging to heal in GW2.

Warrior and revenants are fun, but you don’t have to think most of the times. If you want a class where you need to think and be on your feet, mesmer and elementalists are my choice.

Please nerf bag types instead of class skills!

I’d recommend going for one of the simpler classes to start with, even the easiest ones are harder to play well than in a lot of other MMOs.

Warrior and revenant are both good, I personally found revenant more fun.

As in any MMO, classes go through phases where they’re better or worse in PVE/PVP. Pick the race and class that you like most, if it’s powerful now in your preferred game mode it won’t be in 6 months, and vice versa.

I’d recommend ranger which is easy class to lvl up with with pet and good damage. You could take Greatsword for melee damage. At the end game/PVP you can specialize to druid which is good damage / support class. Race does not matter.
