My first few days
Enjoy it man, it’s a great game for sure. Just keep in mind that it won’t be like that other game you played so always keep an open mind. Also, if you feel like you’re getting burnt out, don’t be afraid to take a few days or a week off, I’ve done it many times and its always a refreshing experience the next time I pick up the game.

I remember helping out a newbie level for a while, next thing I know I’m showing him the way to the Hall of Monuments to collect his GW1 legacy.
I smiled when I got the following question: “All this stuff is mine?!!!!!” Indeed it is friend.

GW2 evolves the more you play it. Also the different professions have markedly different playing styles. Once you get to 80, you will see that your priorities change and that the game feels completely different. I do suggest having at least one of each profession with heavy/medium/light armor. Elementalist may have the highest learning curve but it is extremely dynamic and fun to play (double dagger).
As far as experienced players helping beginners, I have a guild dedicated to that and, the good thing about it, is that you never feel you are wasting your time. Say that someone wants to level a lower level character. You can also take one of yours along and both level up at the same time. So, there is not much waste. You also accumulate guild influence by doing stuff with beginners in your guild.
Very we thought out game. If anything, be wary of trolls and people who want to provoke you, as anet are very trigger happy in the suspension department, this being a non-subscription game.
FYI you can name “that other MMO” and any other game you want and no one will mind. Some of the developers even worked on it, or the preceding RTS’s.
From what I’ve heard (I haven’t played another MMO for years) the community is one of the best things about this game. The forum can get somewhat negative at times but in-game almost everyone’s friendly and helpful.
Of course the players deserve a lot of credit for that but I think the way the game is set up helps a lot too – things like down-levelling, everyone who does enough damage getting loot and XP from a kill and even everyone being able to resurrect with no cost beyond a few seconds of your time actively encourages cooperative and friendly play and the general mood of the community follows.
I have to say it contrasts sharply with my experience of “that other MMO” from when I did a free trial. What I picked up from other players in that game in my first (and only) 8 hours is that you shouldn’t speak to other players unless you’re selling something valuable or looking for a group for end-game content, shouldn’t even play near them in case you tag a kill they were camping/farming and shouldn’t even think about joining a guild until you can persuade them you would be a benefit to them.
If that’s an accurate representation then I know which game I’d rather be playing.
