So I bought GW2 just about a month ago, and just wanted to share my feelings on it so far. I havnt played many mmo’s but played enough of them to know most have things i don’t care for like subscription fees, and screwy charactor build setups ect, so this isn’t my first go on an mmo.
Easily said, game looks great, and plays tight. Gathering a group in the open world or dungeons can be a bit of a chore at times, but i expected that coming in late, and doing lower end content. First couple weeks on the game were a blast, leveling progressoin felt good, discover new areas, do “quests”, replace old gear with new, and I was happy with the speed of my progression.i focused on Str and Def traits, with mostly healing and condition dmg on my gear, while using regens to keep me well more than alive as I leveled, it allmost felt too easy.
By week 3 I had pretty much decided I will NOT, on part of my refusal, be getting 100% map completion, simply because i cannot be asked to run around these maps looking for that one way up to these special little Vista locations. WTF is this Crackdown on xbox!? I’ve been told that you need 100% map to make Legendary weapons, if thats the case… pfft. Chasing these vistas Not Fun.
Week 4 and I have hit level 75. Still have lots to uncover as far as the map goes, and stil have plenty of quests to go back to, which is good. Though my build seems to have crashed out, no longer can i stand toe to toe with 3+ mobs attacking me and survive, even though these mobs are 15-20 levels below mine. I understand the level scaling, but somthing changed when i hit 75, my build jsut wanst cutting it anymore, Ive repect and regeard so much jsut today trying to figure out WTF, but ive only gone broke. months worth of coin collecting gone.
This seems to happen alot with games i really enjoy early on. For jsut a few small reasons the fun disapears that much faster.(L2P right? dont, I use /wiki..)

The problem with a lot of the newer MMOs is the fact that… Well, they are not MMOs. This path of sticking a single player game (with others and friends) isn’t working. This is what they get for trying to get console players into MMOs, cheap arcade games that start dropping players, money & staff after a month.
Here’s hoping the “good ’ole days” return, and return soon©BW (Sorry, had to add the swtor pun as someone is going to same way!).

We’ll stop to sleep when the game is the best possible game we think it can be.
We’ve been awake since March 2007! Please help!

I for one know exactly what you are talking about nutbuter I’ve been going through it for the past two months now. Every major build that comes down the digital pipeline has had nothing but nerfs over and over again, and I’m sorry but the tiny benefit we get from sigils doesn’t justify it. I also have disdain for having to completely rebuild and completely relearn my class every patch all in the name of pvp balance. I don’t pvp so why are pvp balance actions affecting my gameplay at all? that’s right they shouldn’t be. I had high hopes because the interviews i read about this title stated they would be separating pve and pvp code behaviors so that pve players would never ever be affected by pvp balancing. That’s not been the case the entire time for me.

As far as map completion is concerned my only gripe about that is the requirement to go into a pvp zone to complete the world map. If the pvp zone is not considered an open pvp zone (meaning we can run from pve to pvp without a portal or extra teleport) then why do I have to run thru there to complete the map? I’ve seen and heard horror stories of griefers who are allowed to keep people from completing the map with siege weapons and large gangs of players on the jump puzzles and vistas. I’m afraid I’ll have to say to the map completion what I said to games like Aion that forced me into pvp situations, no thanks.

When you said “plays tight”, I instantly thought of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjCo2I3ooK0

You’ll be disappointed to hear that vistas were not originally part of the game. They were added after the first open beta test had finished, back when map completion wasn’t as great of a chore. I’m still not sure why they added vistas except to drag out map completion a bit further. The panning camera shots are beautiful, but let’s be honest, pretty unnecessary.

And to be fair to you, the later portions of the game ramp up in difficulty quickly compared to the early portions. You have to get really good with the game’s mechanics and you’ll generally find that the tactics you used in the early game no longer cut it. You’ll get the hang of it eventually. Orr itself is another learning experience, too.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

The first two things I have are:

1. You are concerned a bit with server population. You didn’t mention what server, would you mind sharing?

2. You say hitting 75 you hit a wall and even downleveling you can’t take on a bunch a trash mobs at once. What profession are you playing? I hadn’t noticed that and have asked for deeper penalties in downscalling as I’ve grown too strong. I’ve passed 75 and didn’t notice what you are experiencing.

I have found new fun, meaning something that doesn’t happen until you hit Orr in terms of end game runs (you can call them GW2 Raids I suppose) on the Cathedrals of 10-40 players, at least on the Magumma server, which I would call it a middle road pop server. Good fun there at least for a while.

By the way I love vista’s and all the map completion points. Brilliant, yeah some are challenging, worst case go to youtube. But that is ok, lets have a little challenge, map completion is a big deal. And I do agree map completion withing PvP area’s is controversial.

One could counter, it gives pause to the talented artists at Anet, to sit back and focus on “hell yah that is a cool looking place they created there”. I have a screen shot of every vista I’ve ever triggered, to me they deserve it. That is one reason I’m fairly adamant about only having open world PvE gaming in GW2. Give these lands the respect they deserve, by using their assets over and over, the gfx are just too good to see them just once for a split second. With a strong system (and sweet fx) this is the best looking mmo imo bar zero.

Did read it, I still feel it gives pause. If you can’t do it, then don’t. If you don’t want to do it, then don’t. The rewards are not that great, you can achieve them by hitting something else instead.

Something that seems to have carried over from GW1 to an extent: Once you hit max level and max gear, things can still get harder which forces you to learn to play better.

That’s not meant to be an L2P comment, but it is one of the things I enjoy the most about games…. I have to figure it out, because it can be done.

I know you don’t want to /wiki, but I highly recomend it. Don’t sweat the meta, don’t worry about what builds other people are running. Take a look at the raw data for yourself and build around that. In older days, the game would have a printed manual that we could refer to for skills and their stats, but in the current world, skills get adjusted for balance and functionality frequently enough that a printed manual would be out of date within a few months.

A-net has a strong record of forking PvE and PvP skills when needed so they can balance the two, but A-net also wants us to have characters that play the same way in PvE and PvP so that there’s no shock when moving from one realm to the other: “WTF? But I was always able to stay alive using this skill before… wait, why is the cool down lasting so long? And it doesn’t do X as much either…. oh kitten, forget this PvP thing!”

It’s a great game, simple to play, tough to master with the depth to keep you challenged for a while. I hope you enjoy it for many months to come!

Personally I’m still having a blast and I have been here since beta, there is tons to do other than the idiodic gear grind that WoW is so infamous for, the community is excellent now since most of the D-bag GW2 Zealots have left, it’s one of the most mature and friendly communities I have ever seen.

You don’t need a spreadsheet or even a wiki to play the game and have fun, you’re character is viable even if it’s not the “right build.” Basement dwellers whine how causal it is, but to me it’s accessible fun and that is why myself and a couple million more people enjoy this game.
