Hello. My name is Aleks and this is just a little ramble about my first two days in guild wars 2. this will proberly not interest old players whove seen it all and done it all but if youre sitting wondering if you should try this game out this might help or it might not. all in all i needed to get it off my chest hahah. Please dont read on if you cant handle gramatic mistakes beacuse there is going to be alot of them..

So lets start. i was sitting in SWTOR and just lost a pvp game outta rage i wanted something else and i remmberd i had looked at gw2 a few years ago but never given it a shot to my suprise it aperently went free to play so i made an acc and started downloading. while it downloaded i checked various youtube videos to figure out what class i wanted. ive always enjoyed being the bad and evil guy so necromancer was a no brainer. but it downloaded. i looked trough the races and i sat for 1 hour deciding what to do as they all looked cool i wasent much a fan of the midgets but the rest looked awesome but i went with human as i figured what the hell first char and all that. so i went in and imediatly i hated it. i wasent a big fan of the art style and the questing was brutal and i hated evry second of it. so i went a bit around did some hearts. and all that tought to myself screw it back to swtor. so that was my first day kinda sad isnt it? so on my second day i tought what the hell Aleks youre gonna push trough it go trough the first area and you can judge it by there. so i did queensdale was not my cub of tea and if i have to escort one more cow dude i swear. but i did it and after awhile i was overleveld and evrything went smoothly like just a nice flow of things i started to stop up and look at the landscape and im gonna feel so nerdy for comming clean with this. i even sat on a cliff for 30 minutes just looking at the world while i drank my morning coffe so i went on and i started getting the hang of the questing do hearts explore and events pop up son you drop evrything you have and you go do that quest. so i reached lvl 10 did my story wich so far is the part i disliked the most for the sheer reason that im a diciple of the god of death who practices the dark arts of Necromancy. but hey i sure do care about peoples feelings. so went trough it got the full map completion great went on to the next area. and imeditaley just started exploring.

And this is now the part if youre still reading with me to this point where i knew guild wars 2 was the coolest game ive ever played.

I found a toxic queen event or something like that tought why not ive soloed a few events before i did not notice the fact it said champion before the moment i attacked so spoiler alert i got downed instatly and im laying there spamming my one trying to get back up

And here it comes.

as i laid there dying out of nowhere this wolf guy charr i think its called jumps over my dying corpse and attacks this lady and i tought yea good luck dude youre dead. as per watching a necromancer vid i saw a bloodwell comming under him and tought okay he has backup within 30 seconds of this happing all the sudden 30 guys jump over me and goes to town on this lady a nice norn woman gets me up and i look around and i swear theres 40 people here we all attack it a few went down some guy yells

‘’GIVE HER NOTHING. TAKE FROM HER EVRYTHING’’ another one yells ‘’FOR TYRIA’’ and im sitting here laughing my kitten off and we fight for a good 10 minutes and finnaly get this lady down. and we all sit around and talk i made some freinds and all that as soon as we all disbanded i went directly to the shop and bought the game. and played for the rest of the day until 6 am this morning and that 40 man event happend alot more times than i expected so all in all.

Im 18 ive played games since i was 6 years old ive done em all wow swtor skyrim morrowind final fantasy dark souls ive done it all. but this experience is something that ive never ever had and im gonna stay here the learning curve scares me reaching lvl 80 scares me but im staying.

Now a few things for new guys reading this im gonna give you some of my own tips on how to play this game.

First off dont rush it please dont just stop once in awhile look around and i promise you 9/10 times youre gonna go uuuh whats over there ive always hated exploring and never seen what people see in it but in this game i find myself doing it all the time.

dont worry your head about the endgame enjoy the now.

when it comes to classes as i said i played wow and a couple other top mmos and theres always these guys ‘’OH YOU GOTTA PLAY THIS ’’Sniffles’’ THIS HAS TOP DPS’’ I dont care i couldnt give less of a singlekitten* do you. do the class you enjoy do the thing that looks coolest to you. you can have your top dps and you can have your heals and you can have your builds. im gonna do me. beacuse this is a game that wants you to do exactly that.

and thats all i can ramble about today beacuse im afraid this is gonna be one long kitten post. but thats how it is im in love with this game and im on lvl 27 i have yet to do a dungeon i have yet to do wvw and i havent looked at crafting yet but kitten i love it.

Thanks for your time reading and i hope it helps you new guys like me or just a vet feeling nostalgeic.

-Aleks

It’s excellent you’re enjoying yourself. The main thing that interests me here though is your belief that Necromancers and Grenth are evil. Because neither are in the Guild Wars lore. There’s nothing stopping you from roleplaying as an evil Necromancer but unlike other games it’s not really the default assumption.

As for doing dungeons…

Profession viability in dungeons isn’t quite what I was referring to there. Dungeon rewards were nerfed into the ground so hard that it’s exceptionally difficult to find groups that still run them. And the people who still do run them are generally people trying to farm tokens for legendary gifts so they want experienced level 80s who can get them done quickly and without fuss. Just an entire segment of gameplay content essentially nerfed out of the game because Anet wanted to move its rewards to their new and shiny content.

I’m still a little dirty about the entire way that panned out and I wasn’t an enthusiastic dungeon runner at the best of times. In any event, if you’re interested in doing dungeons your best bet is to find a guild that’s either close-knit or dedicated to teaching players how to run content rather than, say, trying to find a pick-up group. If you join a large, disparate guild it’s highly likely that most of its members will be focused on their own, more profitable interests. Smaller, close-knit guilds tend to be more actively social and are more likely to do less rewarding content because one person wants to experience it. Even beyond dungeons, finding a guild you like will positively affect your entire perception of the game. This has generally been my experience in any case.

I’m happy to hear you are enjoying the game, I’ve been playing for years, originally I looked at it and decided it wasn’t for me- but my brother insisted I should try it out, he even bought it for me. It started out a little slow like most MMOs, but I was enjoying the story right from the start and as I kept going, of course, things got a little more exciting in higher level maps. :P

I really prefer the open world events to the boring quest lines some other MMOs have.

Glad to hear you are enjoying it and thanks for sharing your experience. I have been playing for years but a lot of things changed and the first impression that you got may be different from what I got.

And I tell you, you did well for not giving up. There are a lot more to see and explore (despite a lot of broken mechanics and stuff :P) and I believe you will enjoy it more. The surface may be intimidating and boring (yay NPE) but its depths can be fun and enjoyable xD.

I’m not going to spoil or what not but I tell you that things were a bit more fun at early levels than what it’s now. I don’t want to ruin your experience but if you want to know more about the game, what changed, how things works, how things were, etc take a look at the Wiki, as well these forums. Also, anytime you need help just ask in game or come to the forums, there always will be someone up to help

Again, glad to hear you are enjoying and a late welcome to Guild Wars 2.

Welcome to Tyria, Aleks.

I am glad you grew to love the game. My first character turned three years old the other day so I have been around for a while but I still find much to enjoy and much I haven’t yet done. It’s a great game and the community is mostly a fantastic one. Enjoy your time here and I hope you stick around.

I started playing the game on a friends account because they didn’t want to. I bought the game a week later. I’ve been playing for 2months or so, maybe 3 now, I lose track of time after a while. Welcome to the game. its not like other MMO’s as questing is centered around the heart system and exploration is as much a part of the game as anything else.
Dungeons, fractals, wvw, the mists, theres a lot to see in GW2. I get annoyed with certain elements of it but its a good game even if it does sometimes leave me wondering if theres any spot on a map I can stand that doesn’t have 100 other people too. lol.

yeah, one thing gw2 doesn’t have is choice between good and evil. would be nice if there was a heart event of rounding up their chickens, but you innately had the option to kill the chickens instead, which awarded more gold but negative karma. something like that would be nice.

OP sounds like you are the kind of person that will appreciate what GW has to offer. My tips for you are classic stuff, enjoy the journey, enjoy the full map and resist the temptation to rush to max level. As an aside if you have never played GW1 I recommend it, one of the all time classic pc games. It has hundreds of hours of content and backing story for GW2 and also provides rewards that ultimately contribute towards to GW2 rewards – google hall of monuments. happy hunting

This game does have an exceptional new player experience.

However like every single game in existence it does have an exhaustible supply of content and you will eventually get it all done. Then it falls to grinding repeat content for end game.

Take your time OP and enjoy the experience while you’re new. Glad your having fun and welcome to the game.

Good point too. I love the way they put those little details. There are a lot of fun talk or even lore related stuff on those dialogs around the world. To quote one: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Stay_near_the_Crush_cubs_and_keep_the_ghosts_away#Dialogue (this one happens during an event, but there are funny others with those stationary NPCs around there)

This game does have an exceptional new player experience.

Hmm I tend to disagree with parts of it.. but let’s leave it to another discussion (for any interested see my signature :P)

Take your time OP and enjoy the experience while you’re new. Glad your having fun and welcome to the game.

Now this I agree, take your time and enjoy it, no reason to rush just to reach more content. There are a lot at the lower levels too.

Dearest OP,

As a Necromancer, you may sometimes be overcome with the urge to animate any number of dead things in order to re-enact well known Seinfeld bits. I understand, we all do sometimes. However, “Newman’s” family would very much like to bury Grandpa and not have him living a horrible unlife as an obese mailman in an unholy marionette show. Please return him to his grave or nearest available shallow ditch. Time is something of a factor here. Thank you in advance for your compliance in this delicate matter.

Welcome to Tyria! I get enormous vicarious thrills out of seeing others have fun discovering things. It refreshes my memory to when I was new and everywhere I turned there was something else cool to find.

If you want help with dungeons you may want to post in Players Helping Players. I bet you’ll find a few folks willing to go through the story and explorable paths without skipping the cinematics (if you’re on NA, I’m willing to be one of them depending on your play times).

Welcome to the game.
Few tips/guidelines:

The game has a lot of world bosses. Starting from level 15 up to 80. Each on a timer. http://dulfy.net/2014/04/23/event-timer/ will show you the name and the waypoint of the boss. A lot of players gather for these bosses, so maybe you will enjoy them aswell

Never ever get depressed if you read bad stuff about the game on the forum. I almost never started the game because of it. Took me, and I kid you not, 2 weeks of reading the forums before I started the game. When I did, I realized that most of the posts(a very small part were true) were made by either bitter people, or players who had absolutely no idea how to play the game; hence, the trashposting.

Don’t rush to hit level 80. Enjoy the story. Enjoy the areas. They’re worth it. Especially the story. I played a lot of games with generic storylines that I never cared about(including WoW after Arthas died, RIFT, SRO, KAL, Aion,RoM,Tera, and many other trash games). The only game that made me love the story, was, Lord of the Rings Online, because I’m a huge Tolkien fan. And that made me cold to any other “mmorpg generic storyline”. And then I started GW2, and I gotta admit, I love it. There’s story characters that feel like family. Please take your time with the story, it’s really really awesome.

If by any chance, you’re on EU, feel free to add me, I’m more than happy to help new players

Beloved OP,

It’s me again, the good and trustworthy Orbital Butt, friend to all and extremely important person. In this game you have chosen, Guild Wars 2, you may in your travels encounter large structures, ruins, outcroppings, mountains, heaps, piles, mounds, or other such interesting looking blobs of landscape. You should immediately and without hesitation fling yourself face first into these aforementioned blobs, as they may be Jumping Puzzles in disguise.

Jumping Puzzles are an important and vital part of the Guild Wars 2 experience, and by hurling your fragile body from ridiculously high places you can reap amazing rewards! Pitch your delicate bone-filled body headfirst from the nearest terrifyingly tall object and find out if it was indeed a Jumping Puzzle or just a regular old cliff. Also be on the lookout for diving platforms, which remove all your clothes so that when you are obliterated after plunging like a naked, screaming meteor into a heap of boulders, you will not ruin your outfit.

Good luck!

Yours in Friendship,

The Honorable

That is an awesome story Scarecrow and thank you for posting it. It reminds me very much of the excitement that I think a lot of us had when we were playing the betas all those years ago and then the day it was finally released.

We need more posts like this as I think a lot of threads are from people who have played a long time (possibly/probably burnt out or need a break) or who just forget the basics of the game and just how lucky we are in general.

I also agree with your statement about playing the class/builds that work for you. I am still to this day an Engi main even tho for years many ppl said things like “they suck” or “they are boring”. But really, tbh it was just that THEY sucked at playing the class or it was too much for them to handle.

I wish you MANY years with the game and lots of fun!

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

I understand the default impression of necro being evil, but it drives me nuts. So death is your chosen profession, have fun enjoy it. Don’t hide behind emo clothes and dark outfits appearing to be miserable. Instead, prance about in bright colorful happiness that can only come from the power of reanimating corpses.

I would certainly suggest to new players, the content is limited and easily exhaustible, however the best (and possibly worst) part of this game is the other players. Find a good guild or group of people to chill with and no matter what your doing (and how often its been done) there could be some fun left in this game. And to that note, contact me in game if you need help/advice a guild or just some one to run with.

Welcome fellow SWTOR transfer! I have also just arrived in the past couple of weeks from SWTOR, joining the fun with over a half dozen friends from our guild. We’re really excited to be here and appreciative of having a game that highly encourages grouped content. This game has a lot of really well thought out features and I hope ArenaNet continues to support the player base for years to come.

Well, a thing we could brag about here is the community. It’s true that there are toxic players here as well can be on any other game, but one of the highlights of GW2 is the community, most of it are friendly and stuff as you can even see here.

About adding someone: Click the Contacts icon at the top left of your screen (second icon if I recall right) and on the Contacts panel you will find a Search/Add field at the top. Just type the username (the same one as showed in front our posts here) or name of any char they can have and hit Enter. It will add that player to your friend list.

If you want to add someone you just met in game: right-click their name in chat or select them in world and right-click their icon at the top of screen, then choose Add to Friend (or Contacts, can’t recall properly).

However a thing to note: adding someone to your list doesn’t make you their friend, you will become their Follower and you will show up in their Followers list (2nd tab on the Contacts panel). So if someone adds you they won’t be in your list until you add them, and vice-versa. Maybe you can even whisper someone who you added to let them know you did, or just let it be and if they are used to check Followers they may add you.

P.S.: Feel free to add me as well if you need some help or stuff

OP:

In regards to necromancers and good vs evil; necromancy in this game setting isnt necessarily evil. Grimdark is a better definition of them, but evil, not at all. Necromancers all the time in this world are on the side of good.

In fact, there really is no evil vs good choices that the characters make; its civilization vs the forces that would destroy civilization… and the world (queue dramatic sounds here). The story revolves around the Elder Dragons trying to destroy the world, and, so far, out of the six, we can now kill two of them.

In the meantime, though, each race also has an “evil” subculture that each race also has to deal with, and several species hostile to our own.

for example, humans have to deal with bandits, hostile noblemen, centaurs, and, at one point, charr. Charr have to deal with flame legion charr and some humans who oppose the peace treaty. Etc etc.

Essentially its less about good vs evil, and more about Civilization vs Destruction. Its the whole “we must fight together, or fall alone.” So, yeah, you “get” to be a hero/good guy lest you see the world destroyed and all the peoples of the world slain.

But you can be a grimdark one at least, esp if you get your hands on armor and weapon skins that sell the whole grimdark attitude
