My opinion about GW2
Seems like you need to return to a holy trinity game.
Changes are coming to PvP and its gear, but other than that I wouldn’t expect most of what you posed to change. And their are good reasons for some of the things you can’t do that you listed.

A lot of comments really sounds like you didn’t tak time to read hat the game is like before buying it. Especially the no trinity parts and the lack of vertical progression in PvP.
I agree with there being too much focus on damage and not enough on defence though. Although some end-game content has a lot of focus on defence, we just don’t have enough of them.
Did you try World vs. World? It resolves many of your " What i didn’t like……" concerns. Not all of them though.
Some of your concerns really didn’t make any sense to me (example: “boon duration is usually less than 5 seconds” and “can’t refund skills”) since they simply aren’t true. Others are by design, such as the lack of a trinity.
At any rate, good luck with your next game.
I can deal with tank and healer not being required for group play. But the fact that all classes are DPS and you cant even play a defensive or healing class is lame. Even if there where tanks and healers, not being able to earn better PVP gear is my biggest gripe. Putting in time for skins is not exciting.
Boons only last a few seconds. It felt silly to spec for something that last a few seconds with long cooldown when i can spec for permanent stat boosts. You can refund trait points. But you can not refund skills you purchased.
(edited by misterDEAN.3027)
A lot of what you say is a con is what makes GW2 great (in the opinion of some, myself included). To each his own. It takes getting use to that’s for sure.

My guardian is built around taking damage and supporting others. When others go down, I’m there to pick them up. It’s a subtle role, but I’m far from a DPS guardian.
That’s actually not a bad list, it covers what most people have complained about the game since release really. They have acknowledged some of these as mistakes/bugs, but I wouldn’t hold your breath for a return of strategy to group play or defensive based characters or anything like that.
Try WvW, you are pretty much forced to build defensively unless you like dying.
As far as PvP progression goes…well…They were far to focused on making it an eSport to worry about rewarding people for time spent imo. It hurt the focus of PvP.
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.

I disagree about the “reading what the game is like” part.
Some people say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and a video is worth a thousand pictures.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35BPhT-KI1E
This is the video that absolutely and successfully describes GW2 in its entirety correctly, and this is the reason why I bought the game. Just watching this video brings tears back to my eyes.
I would swap some of your likes and dis-likes into some different order, but, I will say that on the whole I love this game regardless. I do find that spending real money on gems for gold to get the really good stuff is getting old. I built three out of 5 characters to level 80 and decided that I will now play only one (the main) character from now on. I like WvW and do feel a sense of accomplishment building ascended items and gear. However, I fear that the costs players incur in GW2 that they did not incur in GW1 might eventually (maybe soon; who knows) cost this franchise a grievous loss of love that players had in GW1. Unfortunately, if that happens … I will see my beloved games demise. It all boils down to the world’s REAL economy, not the game’s. When I saw a tax on buying gems and the tax in selling items in the Lion’s store, my heart went backward in time to the Boston tea tax revolt. I pray ArenaNet will come to understand this and reverse the trend. As of a couple of months ago it became impossible for me to convince friends to join me by purchasing GW2. Bad news travels at the speed of the Internet as would good news if the taxing trend is reversed. Hey, they make a lot of money anyway on Gem purchases alone. The idea of tax being a reality of life, so why not in game, should not apply in a virtual world I enter to escape my real world woes. I’m not casting dispersions on ArenaNet. If they want to levy a virtual tax system (making it real when buying gems — 1$ for a 100.00 purchase, for example) then they certainly have that right.
May Guild Wars 2 find a way to live forever!
Ya i am quieting but i still paid for the game and i do have the right to post in the forum.
Everybody must put on a happy face and praise the game? Nobody is allowed to voice their opinions or constructive criticism? Thats terrible. I can see deleting post for profanity, violence, hatred, or just plain being rude and nasty. But my post did not fall in to any of those categories. I am truly in shock. Forum staff members here are like gestapo’s from kitten germany. Comply or we will deal with you.
Yep, there’s absolutely no threads critisising the game on the forums. Every single thread is positive.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
I will watch this thread to see if anything positive comes of it.
Thanks, fellow players.
The list does not seem to be available any longer, although, I remember it … for the most part. This game does evolve and I have my hopes for its future. In my experience, if you tell your boss information that your boss can somehow turn to make it his/her idea for a breathtaking company advancement, you may not get the credit … but the company benefits and so does the one that whispers into the ear of the boss.

I see the list now. Thanks.
I agree with most of the list and after a few months break from the game had been trying to get back into playing but get bored after an hour or so.

Hello,
Due to a large number of post not following our Code of Conduct, we had to moderate this thread.
Please note that any further infraction to the forum rules may result in this thread being locked.
Thank you for your understanding.
I won’t comment on pros/cons listed that I personally disagree with since most of that is a matter of preference, so I’ll just stick with the correcting the fallacious entries
PVE / PVP gear is locked to PVE / PVP
PVP gear is free
cant earn better PVP gear
rewards for PVP are skins
cant use certain abilities in PVP
This could all be summed up in one response. PvP was envisioned as balanced playground denying anyone any sort of advantage outside of their skill, situational awareness and build choice. To put it simply: this is by design.
As for rewards, I was with you on that one, until the last patch that added bunch of other stuff, goldz and more AP’s.
all classes are DPS
all classes can heal
no tank or healing class / spec
shields dont passively block melee attacks
shields overall seem useless
healing power scales poorly
This can also be easily summed up with pointing out your lack of experience. Shields are very useful, and all classes that can use them have viable builds for them. They also do provide passive defensive bonuses, if one traits for those. As for healing power/tanking/DPS issues, you are simply wrong, and the fact that teams always roll at least one tank guardian in PvP, while spirit rangers, decap engies, MM necros and some warriors can serve as back up tanks should be enough to refute everything you mentioned.
As for healing, without dedicated healer it is an imperative to provide every class with a way to regenerate lost HP during combat.
cant salvage karma gear
By design to prevent exploits.
boon duration is usually less than 5 seconds
Flat out wrong. Signet of rage is the first thing that comes to mind, it has a cooldown of 60 seconds (untraited) and gives 3 boons for 30 seconds. With adequate bonuses you can have those three boons up non-stop.
cant refund skills
Don’t understand this one. Why would you refund skills ?
level scaling - This one I don’t get, do you think you should retain your stats in lower level zones ? or do you think you should be denied skills/utilities that people in that range shouldn’t have access to ? I’ve seen people advocating both sides.
(edited by Moderator)
(This is a loooong post. Had to break it into two. Sorry ’bout that)
Here’s a more lengthy reply to some of the items you didn’t like. I didn’t have time earlier to address your concerns.
PVE / PVP gear is locked to PVE / PVP
PVP gear is free
cant earn better PVP gear
rewards for PVP are skins
cant use certain abilities in PVP
I mentioned this before, but you have you tried the World vs. World PvP? Everything that you’ve found and use in PvE stays with you when you enter WvW. You can even use all of your normal abilities just as you do in PvE. Additionally, you have access to special bonuses that translate to additional damage, more life, and increased damage/defense/etc with siege warfare if that sort of thing strikes your fancy. Gear of all sorts of stat combinations can be purchased in WvW with a combination of gold and WvW tokens which essentially lowers the cost of the items. You can solo roam, small group roam, or even fall in with a huge zerg to engage in epic warfare.
all classes are DPS
all classes can heal
no tank or healing class / spec
There is a decent amount of build diversity in this game. In PvE, damage is king and thus DPS builds are more heavily utilized. In WvW (really not trying to sound like a WvW commercial, honest), you run different builds depending on how you play. There is more of a focus on sustain through higher toughness and vitality as well as more healing power. Depending on your group makeup, you can in fact make a character focused more on healing or tanking. I’ve personally found builds that are well-balanced amongst the three to be more fun, but YMMV.
shields dont passively block melee attacks
shields overall seem useless
This seemed like a shocker to me at first too, especially after the heart quest in Queensdale that leads you to believe you can block any attack by simply pressing a button. Even though that isn’t the case, there are still defensive/protection skills that are tied to shields such as Shield Stance (Warrior) and Shield of Judgement (Guardian). I don’t even use shields though so this doesn’t seem to be as big of an issue to me as to you.
healing power scales poorly
True with some skills. Not true with lots of others. In the interest of balance, some skills intentionally do not buff well with healing power, such as Healing Signet. Thank goodness too. If you could only see the whining that goes on about that one skill… haha
cant salvage karma gear
While this is true, there are still other methods to getting the runes/sigils of these if that’s what you’re trying to accomplish. Granted, the ways are not obvious to new players. I believe we used to be able to salvage karma gear, but there was some sort of abuse that lead to its removal. I don’t recall the specifics, but I wish we could salvage them too.
not many dungeons
Having no previous MMO experience, I can’t comment on how many is not enough, just right, or too many. With that being said, there are 8 “normal” dungeons with a story mode and three paths each. There are also 15ish Fractals with different paths and steadily increasing difficulty, which could be considered dungeons. There are also special events that included dungeons such as the Super Adventure Box and Tixx’s Infinarium. (I got all of this from the wiki btw. I don’t do many dungeons)
not much group play outside pvp
See above. In addition to what I’ve mentioned already (WvW and dungeons), there are large world events in which you can participate.
(edited by Shademehr.1397)
boon duration is usually less than 5 seconds
This is really dependent on the boon and your class/build. I can run a warrior with permanent Fury or Swiftness. I can run a ranger with permanent regeneration. There are a ton of boons that last considerably longer than 5 seconds. Take +boon duration sigils/runes. Put points into a classes trait line that increases the durations of boons. Lots of options really. Play with a friend and build complimentary builds. It makes it even easier to have permanent uptime on certain boons.
guardian feels more like an offensive class than defensive
You can build them both ways.
the game is so focused on DPS there is little room for defense builds
You’re right (in PvE).
cant refund skills
Skill points are unlimited. You can continue to gain skill points after you reach level 80. I’ve got hundreds and hundreds of unused skill points on several different characters.
cant receive items from auction house as easily as you can sell them
Those carrier birds are working their heinies off. Give em a break!
can reach max level in 2 weeks
True, but you had to invest quite a significant amount of time over those two weeks to do that. There are still 7 more classes for you to try though, not to mention leveling your crafting professions, making ascended gear, enjoying the holiday or special content, running dungeons, running Temples, or whatever else you enjoy. Heck, Guild Wars 1 only let you get to level 20.
little strategy required just DPS everything
PvE is ez-mode most of the time. Try Tequatl once.
karma gear cost goes from 500-1000 a piece to 40,000-50,000 a piece at 80
You will be drowning in Karma in very little time. I’ve got over 3.3million sitting on my account and I’ve spent a TON of it.
I get that you have concerns. Heck, I’m not even trying to change your mind. I just want you to have all the information you can so you can make an even more informed decision.
Whatever you decide, good luck!
(edited by Shademehr.1397)
Indeed you can sir, but appearance goes a long way.
As you have witnessed by people quoting out their own opinions of your opinions…lists are not conducive to meaningful discussion. Lists of what’s good and what’s bad is seen as little more than nitpicking, without any attempt to offer meaningful discussion into critique or solutions.
I provided a list of things i enjoyed. Who are you to say what can or can not be meaningful conversation?
little strategy required just DPS everything
“PvE is ez-mode most of the time. Try Tequatl once.”
Tequatl is easy, try dodgeing once.
The only unconstructive thing about your list is the lack of ‘why’ you find them certain aspects appealing / unappealing.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
Seems like you need to return to a holy trinity game.
Seems like you need to study why the Holy Trinity even works and why GW2 failed so miserably in trying to break it.
PROTIP: You cannot break something that is so core to class interactions. It’s why GW2 barely has any.
kitten , GW1 did “breaking the Trinity” better by letting each class TRULY have different ways to play and even mix professions to really get some crazy builds.
(currently leveling: a Mesmer, an Engineer, and a Guardian)
I did do Tequatl. Blow up wall and DPS. It was cool, even when you lost it was cool seeing him jump around and go back in the sea, but it didnt require a whole lot of strategy. Core mechanic was DPS as fast as you can. As usual.
I will agree, my list would have been more meaningful with an explanation. However, i think people who have played this game understand what im saying without further explanation. What im saying is pretty self explanatory. No need to write a mini novel. Other players can add to my OP and discuss things in detail as much as they like.
I will give credit to developers for trying to break the mold. It takes guts to go against the flow. I can appreciate the effort. But the execution did not live up to the dream. DPS class is fun. But when everybody is a DPS and the fundamental principal of the game is kill fast with little to no strategy it lacks a certain element of variety and depth.
I rolled a guardian cause i wanted to play defensively. And i dont need a lecture about a guardians defensive capabilities. I understand how the class works. I just feel it lacks the substance of a true defensive character. To me it feels more like a DPS class with a splash of defensive abilities. In wow paladins have 3 specs. They are all very tailored to a specific function. But for me the guardian is only a DPS class. There is no breaking away from it. Even though it has defensive elements the focus of the class is DPS. And thats not what i wanted to play. I feel like im being forced to play my character the way the developers want me to play instead of the way i want to play.
The criticism seems to be “its not like WoW” in the way that each class is “very tailored to a specific function”. Thats because its not and it shouldn’t be, there are plenty of WoW clones but there aren’t other games quite like Guild Wars 2. It is a game for players that are tired of the holy trinity, like myself. I like being able to log on and throw a group together without worrying to much that I don’t have the proper collections of classes and builds.
It is a game that was designed to be different. Coming here and saying its bad and you shouldn’t have bought it is like being displeased that an apple doesn’t taste like an orange, and making statements that it should be more like an orange. At that point you buy an orange not an apple.

I think more of the point is, through supposedly giving players more choice with their character, they effectively limited that choice completely to 1 role, with support being really the only viable alternative, and then it’s not viable in over half the game still.

I disagree, there are many roles you can play outside of pure DPS that you can do. You have only played to level 70 and have experienced none of the end game content to find it reasonable that you’ve tried everything a guardian has to offer.
Will it be as specified as you want it to where you don’t have to worry about things like doing damage or taking damage? Probably not, because this games purpose was to do away with that so people are not standing around spamming “GLF hero” tank, dps, healer, ect ect. It is in the games intent that classes are not specialized.

(edited by Mireles Lore.5942)
My criticism is not that its not like wow. But wow is the giant in this area and they are competing against it so there will be comparisons. WoW did not create defensive or healing characters. But they did embrace variety. GW2 completely threw away the idea of defensive and healing class. They threw away the variety. All classes must DPS. And you may like that, but i dont, and i dont think the majority do either.
It is different. But different doesnt mean better. And different doesnt always win the race. Most of the time different fails. My OP doesnt say i think its bad. I said its average. In other words, its OK. Meaning not bad or good. I didnt say i shouldn’t have bought it either. I said i dont regret buying it. So dont twist my words around.

I’ve been 80 since May. I’m not the OP, just trying to convey his frustrations with the lack of role choice in this game. Or at least I think that’s what he was getting at.
/shrug
RIP my fair Engi and Ranger, you will be missed.
Yes, thank you.
Lack of role choice and play style is my biggest disappointment. And let me be clear, i am not complaining. Im sure to most who enjoy the game it seems like im complaining. Im not. Im just expressing my disappointments. I could understand im just bitter and talking smack if all i did was say negative things. But thats not what i did. I started off with a list of things i enjoy. Thats my way of being fair and not just being negative. For the first 2 weeks i had fun. After i fully understood the game i lost interest. And that sucks cause i was VERY excited to leave wow and find a new game to play.
And since some of you dont like my list i will be specific and tell you my next biggest disappointment – PVP. I could happily PVP from 10-90 in wow. But after i realized i cant earn better gear and i was investing time and effort for skins that completely killed it for me.
These two things is what made me realize i wont continue to enjoy this game.
Think its a matter of misplaced expectations in this game. Alot of players I find are looking for a WoW replacement or a WoW2, this isn’t WoW2 its Guild Wars 2. It isn’t in a “race” to phase out WoW its a totally different product.
Could the game use more build variety?
Maybe but how much can you really add before you start getting into specialized roles that only certain classes and people can fill? That was a huge problem in Guild Wars 1 and its what they have done a good job of eliminating in 2.
If you have to follow a complaint with “in WoW” you are in the wrong game.

@misterDean.3027 No one here can tell you your opinions are right or wrong. They are opinions, after all. Some of our posts were simply to point out some things that you incorrectly stated. No worries though, there’s no way anyone can know everything there is about this game, or any MMO really, in two weeks. It seems like you’ve made up your mind though, so I’m moving on. No sense in beating a dead horse and frankly there are some folks in here that just seem really angry. o.O

I dont care if people dont agree with me. Its not a popularity contest. Im not running for president. I just wanted to say what i think, hear what others think, and maybe, just maybe, my opinions and the opinions of others will help improve the game. Even though as of right now i lost interest, the best thing about this game is no monthly fee, so if they make changes that i like i can come back at any time. I am very sad to realize as much as i want the guardian to be my class, its not. So maybe i will try the necromancer one day when im bored to death and have nothing better to do.
I dont claim to know everything about the game, but, i am very quick to learn these games, and i have spent many MANY hours reading on the wiki and in the forums. I know enough to know its not what i thought or hoped for. Thats not a bad thing, its just not what i enjoy.

Tequatl isnt really hard in the traditional sense of things. It isn’t a ‘normal’ fight. It’s more like commanding an army in a war. The difficulty doesn’t really come from the fight mechanics themselves, but from organising 80 people and orchestrating your army during the encounter. It’s definitely an epic and impressive encounter the first time you experience it though.
For actual difficulty I’d go with something like TA Aetherpath if you want to retain your sanity, or Arah P4 if you want to live the rest of your GW2 life as a madman.
You’re cutting off your nose to spite your face, so of course you deserve the infraction. You obviously want a game with raids/dungeons and trinity, well, like WoW. Do you see people going to the WoW forums(Which is actually just as bad when it comes to infractions) and listing everything the game doesn’t have nor should have. Do yourself a favor and go back to WoW, it’s the game you want anyway.
You dont know what i want. I was never a big raider. I would do them once or twice just to experience it. I mainly did PVP. Im not going back to wow. And i dont want a game like wow. I played enough wow. What i want is variety deep customization and strategy. And you wont find that in GW2. All you gotta do is DPS.
At the OP. This is purely an inform, not an attempt to get you to change if you don’t want to. I have been increasingly critical of GW2 over the last year, but have received zero infractions in that time. Businesses that provide online chat boards are entitled to make whatever rules they want to govern said boards. The infractions I received — oddly enough, during a period when I was positive about the game — all occurred before I read those rules.

If you want to post your opinion without infractions, a review of what’s allowed and what isn’t might be in order.

‘They could learn a few things from WoW…’
They’ve learned that imitating WoW too closely only leads to losing players to WoW because they aren’t WoW. So they may as well do things their way, because people will be dissatisfied and go back to WoW.
Really, the issue is that folks want WoW to have better graphics, so they lurch around to other games in the hope they’ll find that, regardless of how much the game is or isn’t like WoW. But instead of going to Blizzard and demanding graphics upgrades, they go to other games and demand they change their core systems to be more like WoW’s.
My suggestion is to play a game for what it IS. Not what you wish that it was. If you know a game has no tank/healer/dps setup, and that’s what you think is best, don’t get a game that isn’t like that when you have many choices that are.
Tarnished Coast
A shield is a defensive item but in GW2 its considered a weapon. LOL – thats funny to me. They have zerker spec on the brain and they dont understand defense. They try to include defense elements in the game but they fail miserably cause the way they design the game its more effective to burst down your target than defend.
I would have thought that someone who can obsess for 10 hours on a forum goodbye thread could have lasted more than three weeks in a game.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
I dont think they should imitate wow. I hear rift is so close to imitating wow its not funny. That doesnt appeal to me. But that doesnt mean they have to throw away the whole book. Im cool with tanks and healers not being required to progress. But the fact that they force people to play a DPS class and go out of their way to prevent people from playing a pure defensive or supportive character is absurd.
(edited by misterDEAN.3027)
Shields in GW2 are used more like how Romans used shields: as a defensive and offensive weapon, not just a passive barrier. Their variety of shields (from the big rectangle wall ones that riot police still use today) to the smaller bash-‘em-upside-the-head types) is part of what made them so formidable in combat and is an influence on ANet’s shield skill design.

I personally dont believe how romans used shields had any influence on how shields work in game. I doubt they had any thought past how do we make this a DPS item. I think they are just so focused on DPS they dont know what defense is.

It is to avoid bottlenecking groups with healers and tanks. I always play healers in every MMO but this one, but I think what ANet did was ok.
However, you CAN spec to be useful with heals and mitigation; I set up my mesmer with a healing build, and was actively keeping up players and key NPCs in various events and such. Have kept Grenth from failing several times by keeping Jonez and players up.
It really depends on who you group with, in regards to DPS. I’ve done Arah runs where I was in mixed gear and had a defensive build that kept my party members up; I’ve also run it with very speedy people and could go full DPS. Suit your build to your group and the situation. If you are with speedrunners who insist on full zerk and nothing else, find other groups or make some.

Wow, seriously? OP was infracted for that? Did the mod edit his post or something, because it doesn’t look like he wrote anything bad. Can’t even criticize gw2 without an infraction? That’s what it looks like.
