My opinion of underwater combat
Don’t forget the underwater mob that decides to go Invulnerable when he’s down to 5% of it’s HP! That’s a fun mechanic!
if you want to have fun underwaterfights roll a condition Mesmer they are nearly unkillable underwater and stack about 10-15 confusion on you perma. If you use timewarp you get 15-23 stacks.
funny no one ever complain about this ^^ )
greetz
Underwater skills are all kinds of messed up too. Many don’t work unless the enemy is at a certain elevation compared to you. I have gotten pretty good at it, but I avoid certain bum skills like the ele earth 3 skill that actually pulls and CCs YOU instead of the enemy.
learn to use the mouse to turn and you will do really well.
if you keyboard turn and dont keep the camera faceing your target then yes you will have a hard time in underwater.
just imagine you are strafeing underwater like on land combat. hold the right mouse button down and use A D to strafe (this works exactly like the strafe keys and lets u rebind them).
people really need to learn to mouse turn and strafe in combat.

Third, a thief!! Yea, im staying high and dry, i think im going to skip ALL water content and only do my story water ones * cringe *.
Nine Tailed Strike is your Thief’s best friend underwater. Once I got the timing down on that thing, my Thief’s aquatic adventures got a lot more… /e puts on sungoggles …bubbly. I fully expect it to be nerfed into the silt at any moment, once the devs realize it somewhat lessens the degree of submarinely annoyance.
I think it is fine. It should have a level of confusion, your underwater and fighting with an extra axis….z. Think of air combat, fighter pilots have to think about a X,Y and Z plane.
thief is op underwater, the only thing that needs fixing is the fact that mobs reset, rest is quite fun tbh
anyway i play a thief and use the harpoon gun underwater.
i have an unload style main atack, i have an evasive push back with poison trail, i have a snare and a shadow step. and my #1 skill pierces.
thanks to thief int system i can spam my abilitys all day and rip things to bits.
as i said its only the bad players with the inability to mouse turn that have any real issue in underwater combat.
btw its really fun fighting players underwater. most of the time they have no idea what the hell is going on.
i guess playing games that lets u pilot aircraft (battle field planet side 2 halo etc) give u an edge in 360 degree combat.

Certain classes have it better underwater, so yes, it isn’t thoroughly balanced. Gear also has quite a bit to do with it as well, since most neglect their underwater weapons and don’t match the runes of their armor with their re-breather (insert rant on not being able to craft re-breathers.) The Elementalist, I have found, is the least fun underwater. Mine also avoids it like the plague. However, I love underwater fights with the Necromancer, virtually every skill is golden and it is a fun change up to go from a ranged condition spammer into a melee whirlwind with the spear.
Underwater combat is actually enjoyable for me and i honestly don’t understand the hate, it has some issue, some major to be honest but it’s definitly not bad. I didn’t encountered a single “invulnerable” mob in a long time (i can’t say the same on land) and the weapons are generally far more interesting (warrior might be an exception, didn’t tried yet, but it looked kinda dull and the speargun a bit out of place).
I think the biggest issue is the lack of utility skills available underwater, every utility/elites that aren’t useable underwater should have an underwater version.
There are some annoying issues like the steal bug. As a thief, if you stole an item that isn’t useable unerwater, you will basically have to go out of water, use that skill and go back… There’s also and issue with the skills that pulls YOU to your target as they stun YOU for a while (making it pretty much as bad as the thief d/p dual skill). You should also be able to use underwater skills when your at the top of the water instead of that nonsensical “swim mode”.
Underwater has a huge potential imo but anet themselves kinda did everything to pull people away from it.
I hope they will realize mixing land and underwater combat at the same time is actually pretty fun (the wvw fort allowing this is the best wvw area) and could open some interesting mechanics, a boss that you would fight on two battlegrounds were underwater and on land people would have to cooperate to bring it down would be an example.

Necromancers are in desperate need of an underwater elite.
I have 7 characters and its quite clear there are classes that excel underwater (thief, ranger, warrior…. if i recall) and classes that are just terrible (by comparison – like the elementalist).
There are classes i just avoid any water situation because their skills seem a little underwhelming.
Underwater combat lacks variety. It’s a lot of point spam spam spam, thank god it’s it’s finally over.

This.
Why can I not use a flesh golem under water…or any of my elite skills?
I love the underwater combat and the whole underwater system in the game. Ele just needs better options with weapon skills because it does kinda suck to have timed “mine” that can be completely useless and miss most of the time even when circle kiting.
Thief on the other hand, harpoon gun is nothing shy of amazing under water. Same for Ranger.
As an Ele, I have to say we eles have strong aoe spells underwater and a super elite, ele is definetely balanced underwater, I just wish we could have some more support-focused skills (maybe another weapon to do that??)
It’s absolutely terrible…please do not expand on it ArenaNet…please. It would be a step up if you didn’t force us to use new weapons underwater. Please just take them out and let us use our land weapons underwater. It’s obvious that it was a quick idea not really thought out well. it’s so bad, please just leave it, dont add more to it…just let it die.

To start with, Why did someone change my title?
And secondly , i see what im doing wrong, keyboard turning…
I guess all those times raiding as either the main or off tank back in burning crusade didnt teach me anything ( with a prot warrior mind you ). I also guess being a gamer for the past 28 years didnt teach me a thing or 2 either…
All sarcasm aside, no offense mate, if you really must know, i have also been keybinding every skill for the past 10 years!!
Underwater combat is DODGY…
Lol man, underwater is one of the most interesting things in the game, I hope they expand it in every possible way and improve the combat, I too think it’s not perfect but it has potential to be.
Please, keep underwater content coming, one of the most horrible things in WoW was that underwater nosense stuff, I just wish you add more depth to the oceans (like reaching darker areas O.O)
I hope they let underwater combat crawl to a corner and die silently. I find it so annyoing to see so much manpower wasted on something we see <1% of the time on average while levelling out first chars, and after that only in that one fractal… Once the novelty wears off, we are stuck in an annoying mini game where a lot of skills don’t work and a lot of character builds just don’t apply because we can’t wield the weapons they promote.
Think of it this way: If they hadn’t bothered with underwater combat at all, we could have 2 more working weaponsets per profession (as that would only mirror the work that was put in the weapons sets we have underwater), and the latest patchnotes would probably have featured something somebody gives a kitten about, instead of “XXX underwater skill is now a 20% projectile finisher.” Now can there still be anyone who actually prefers underwater combat to that? Didn’t think so…

Underwater it very broken, mobs just lose interest heal, then re attack and kill you..especially on Necro..you do not re heal and die, not fun…
Classes are extremely unbalanced underwater, Engineer, Ranger are quite good if the mobs don’t go invulnerable mid fight… other classes like ele, warrior etc are a joke to use under water…there needs fixes and balance to make under water a fun time to play.
I like underwater combat. It’s not mainstream thing to the game but its a nice change to go underwater sometimes.
Under water is a pain because of the resets but on the plus side im a ranger and a i get a huge freaking shark
