I haven’t played Guild Wars 2 in about a year and a half. My computer broke, I finally fixed it, then I got a new phone (I had Google authenticator) I bought Guild Wars 2 back when it first came out……back in August of 2012. Paid full price, I think it was 49.99 or $59.99 back then.

So because of not playing in almost 2 years, out of the blue I decided to play again, because frankly, it’s a kitten good game. I had heard about HoT but did not look into it. I go through the 6 or 7 hours of customer support emails and 2 tickets later, the now defunct authenticator is gone and I can reset my forgotten password.

Then I realized, if I wanted to get the “super cool new and flashy” stuff that HoT brought….I’d practically have to buy the game…..again. What…..the…..kitten. I thought for sure that if I was an OG buyer (literally played in the games early access for pre purchasing) the price point would be either included, or at MOST $30. If it was $15-$20 I’d have bought it no problem. Now a game I WAS really excited to get back into has left a sour taste in my mouth and it still goes undownloaded on my comp even after all my horrible customer support email bull.

Ok sorry guys and gals this is just new to me. Rant over

If you don’t think the game is worth $50 it’s often on sale at DLGamer for $35, so you don’t have to pay full price.

The expansion is priced at $50. No obligation to buy it; there’s plenty to do in Core Tyria.

Good luck.

(Don’t be surprised if this is merged into the existing thread regarding this issue.)

If you haven’t played in 2 years there’s lots to do. You can download the core game and play it until the expansion goes for sale at a price you like.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

I get it, I really do. I just think new players are getting a great deal. 2 games for the price of one, while us old players are stuck with no extra goodies at all. But I suppose I will download the core game and just wait for a sale I suppose

While it is pricy, the reason they folded the old game into the new expansion is to avoid a high price wall that keeps new people out. They have to have new people to replace the vets that stop playing and a high price wall on a 3 and a half year old game would be a sure way to keep new people from buying. From now on that’s the way it’s going to be. Every new expansion will have the old content folded into it at no extra charge to entice new people to buy.

It’s not as great as all that. It’s more like 1.1 games for the price of one for new players.

Depends on what you like. (Manasa doesn’t like much from HoT and I do.) Personally, I think gliding alone is worth much of the expansion price, especially after you stop losing endurance.

Anyhow, forget HoT — start with the core game and see if you still like it. If you do, then it’s probably worth investing in HoT.

No, I’m making a genuine guess at the amount of content added by HoT here.

The base game offers a lot of PvE content, from open world to dungeons to fractals. HoT adds a tiny bit of open world, no dungeons, no fractals.

The base game offers a whole game mode that HoT does nothing for (WvW).

What HoT adds compared to what the base game starts out as, is very little by any objective standard.

I can understand the problem for you but for me who have played GW2 vanilla since release and only taken small weekly breaks I have gotten more than 3 years of enjoyment with content that no new players probably will never get.
Things I have gotten for have bought and played GW2 vanilla.
- LS Season 1 game experience.
- LS season 1 AP.
- LS Season 1 Rewards.
- LS Season 2 for free.
- A neat outfit (That I never use :P).
- The enjoyment of have been able to play 8 Vs 8 in PvP-
- The enjoyment of have been able to play “Raid on the capricorn”, one of the best PvP maps ever.

I can not think of more but I am sure I have earned back these $ that I have invested in the game.

I am actually sorry for you OP, if you would have left the game for not liking it, it would have been a different story but now it is not realy your fault.

Maby, if you havent played that much on your GW2 Vanilla account try contact support to see if you can get the money back for it and then buy GW2 HoT… If you are not prepared to erease your old account then I think you got your moneys worth anyway.

What you said is objectively not true. HoT borught the new BLs and the new fractal system. Whether it’s good or not is another thing, but those came with the expansion.

The HoT maps are bigger and (IMO) better designed than any of the core Tyria ones. They are also more than the maps added in LS1 and LS2 combined and each is significantly bigger than either Southsun, DT or SW. In fact because of their verticality I think they are bigger than any of the core Tyria maps.

HoT was relatively light on content, but objectively what you are saying is not correct at all. Neither is the 1.1 games estimation. Simply not true.

It does not change much but Vanilla game didn’t have fractals, Silverwastes, Dry Top, Southsun cove, 3-headed worm and much more.
My friends who started playing GW2 got to level 80, didn’t bother with story, looked for End Game content and quit after about a week
They started playing GW2 HoT, they are still playing it.
Now lets ask them ‘Do you feel like you got more of the money spent on GW2 Vanilla then you got from GW2 HoT?’

The money isn’t always represented in the amount of content but in what the content is and if it interests you or not. If a small amount of content can keep you interested for a year it’s as good as ever.

Me? Well I feel a little bored now, I am still waiting for LS3 but that is a part of the expansion so if you don’t have HoT then you will not be able to play it.

Fractals got changed, not added to, and the changes are not tied to HoT. 0% added.

The new Deserted Borderlands add exactly as much as what was taken away from WvW, assuming that they’re as valuable as the original borderlands were, which many people would vehemently disagree with. Also, not part of the HoT package. 0% added, and that’s being gracious.

That’s 2 things you mention that are part of the original game now, not part and parcel of the HoT purchase. I ‘m starting to see why you think my 1.1 is too small a number. You’re misinformed about what HoT buys you.

Even if HoT maps are “bigger” and “better designed” (which I don’t agree with, but I’m being gracious again) taken all together they’re still awfully small compared to the rest of Tyria taken all together. Some percentage added.

Raids. Terribly small amount of content, regardless of to whom it appeals.

Elite specs and masteries. Small amount of content.

To be fair, 50 euros is the same price as a nice piece of clothing or a nice meal in a restaurant. You’ll probably play the game longer than the time spent wearing that clothing or eating that nice meal.
