My solution to Laurels and Ascended gear.
They’ve stated before they’re increasing the ways you can get ascended gear. Most likely dungeon related ones will be coming eventually.
Or make them available through Karma and crafting.
I agree with your points, but I think the reason for laurels is to make sure it takes 180 days (less counting monthlies) to gear up a toon. This slows the gear progression while still giving people who need something to work toward something.
If they make any universal currency, this quickly go away. People will farm dungeons, fractals, WvW, etc and the hardcore will have a full ascending set in 64 seconds and then be back on the forums complaining.
I expect that in a year when ultra-ascended super dooper gear is released laurels will be much easier to obtain.
I share the same sentiments. Some days I’m able to play for several hours and other times I can go days without being able to play at all. This is why when I have a decent amount of time I go to fotm cause I can do a couple dailies there with a “reasonable” price for the rewards. The laurel costs are outrageous and with the addition of accessories for 40, the uphill slope turned into a mountain for me. Also, being in a large guild won’t help because it’s unlikely I’ll be able to make it everytime they decide to do these missions.
Obviously we’re going off of some basic information and a couple screenshots, so it’s possible there may actually be more ways included in this update — but by the way anet has been going about this lately, I highly doubt it and this is becoming very disheartening.

180 days for those that have the ability to play every single day, but for casual players that can not log in every day just to watch npc’s die so you can res them, and dodge around in lava fonts it will take a LOT longer than 180 days.
Or make them available through Karma and crafting.
I’m holding out for the Karma rout, give me something to do with 500k+ otherwise useless Karma points.
My solution: not play until there’s enough fun content and a decent looking future for the game. Enough to justify grinding things I don’t want to do in order to experience said fun content…
The reason we have Ascended Gear and Laurels is twofold:
1.) It’s always easier to add grind and carrots to repetitive content than it is to make repetitive content fun.
2.) ArenaNet realized that sPvP was lacking, WvW has significant issues, and the few PvE dungeons got old. Solution? Give them grind that they’ll eat up and not realize that they’re doing what they did in every other MMO; MMOs they left because they don’t want to do exactly what they’re now doing!

I agree with you, the system sucks, I’m just outlining my view of why they did it this way. I have 4 level 80 alts and I hate that I can’t get the gear in any reasonable time frame.
(queue some kitten saying that I shouldn’t expect to outfit 4 toons in the amount of time it takes him to get 1. Yeah, yeah, I know., you’re brilliant, thanks)
Any solution to the problem would have to take into account the reason that Anet did it this way, and while I don’t know anything, I suspect its to slow access to the gear.
Oh please, you’re not forced to do anything. So you don’t do the daily everyday, you won’t get the item you want as fast as others, but you can still get it eventually.
Exotics are almost as good for any purpose other than providing AR for fractals, and perhaps even better in some cases as you have more flexibility in what stats are available.
And they are supposed to be adding more ways to gain ascended items, including through WvW and crafting. I hope they add this soon, the value of having a jeweler is already greatly diminished with accessories now apparently being added. Please don’t do the same with the armor and weapon crafting professions.

I’d love to see the ascended gear become account bound instead of soulbound. I have 4 lvl 80s and will soon starts working on 5th one, and getting 3 sets of accessories and gear and whatnot per character that is all soulbound is huge waste of time and storage. Making the ascended stuff account bound would also be the easiest solution for people with multiple characters.

Before it was easy. Get to 80. Get your exotics via WvW/crafting/dungeons/TP. Go have fun in WvW/PvP/Dungeons. The game had a good looking future as it seemed like a lot more open-world PvE content would be added, new dungeons would be added, WvW would steadily be improved, and PvP would receive significant attention to fix its problems and make it e-sport material. Almost none of that has happened.
As a result we get grind. The game was fine the way it was, all that was needed was problem fixing. Instead, we have the game before, except if you don’t want to be behind everyone else you have to spend many hours (cumulatively) doing things you don’t want to do.
There’s many ways you can improve the game. Adding grind is not one of them. It doesn’t improve the quality of the game. What it does is mask the problems and give us a different motivation to play besides fun and cosmetic progression (when that’s all we needed).

I don’t see the grind here. You come in, you do your dailies, 90% of which usually gets done without even trying, eventually you have enough laurels for whatever you want.
Play the game as you would anyway. Get rewards.

I really don’t hate “grind” if its something I want to do, what I hate is being forced into a specific grind. I don’t want to be FORCED to log in every day and do the daily’s, I might anyway but don’t want to feel like I am being forced to do so.
If I want to play FotM all day long every day, or CoF P1 farm all day every day that’s my choice. That’s why I think they should be a way to convert all these different play styles and rewards from those things into one universal currency or add a way to obtain these items to vendors for all the different currencies.
For Exotic armors and accessories there were many different ways to obtain the same stat item, the only grind you had to do was if you WANTED a specific appearance item.
It feels grindy. But I expect there will come another ‘better’ gear in future, so I don’t even try to compensate the handicap anymore. They should have instead added some cool optional skins.
As long as you’re playing Nikon, you’ll get to where you want to be. It sounds to me moreso that you’re unhappy with the rate you’re getting rewards.
guys with that crazy expensive ascended gear no one going to have enough L for other things like the crafting tools or for those infusion stuff u forgot there other stuff u can buy with L which are good if they were not being overshadowed by ascended gear.
this game is moving toward becoming typical grinding mmo.
distancing itself from what they promised before release remember “we let u play the game the way u like”
isnt this forcing u to do dailies?
isnt this forcing u to have main character?
isnt this encourages hard core thing again?by the way games made around hard core grinding failed big example of them like: TERA,and RIFT and TSW
isnt this by far no REVOLUTIONARY mmo?(make me laugh when i think of high anticipation around this game back in 2011)
all said this game still has chance to become the revolutionary mmo we all thought it is going to be this game still has potential to become king of the hill.

No, now I spend 20+ minutes every day in Queensdale doing the same stupid events over every day and gathering COPPER before I can go out and actually play the game the way I want.
I tried doing 3 paths of AC before working on my daily the other day and only got to 25% Daily completion. So back over to Queensdale to finish it up… what a joke.
Make the daily a weekly so we don’t have to log in EVERY DAY to res dead NPCs and hope my teammates die so I can res them would be a good start.

Actually I have 3 exotic armor sets I use for different situations, 36 ascended rings eating up my bank, have 6 different fractal weapons (9 total I have a few duplicates), an ascended amulet, 2 ascended back pieces, all available bank slots and bag slots, everything needed for legendary wep except precursor…….etc… but the fact that I am sitting pretty well off in-game doesn’t defer my judgement on what would be fair for more casual players.
When I talk about those that cant play daily I am really not referring to myself I am referring to casual players in general, I am disabled and pretty much left with my computer for entertainment and get plenty of playtime. But I hear from a lot of friends that don’t have the free time that I have and it sucks that they are left out and can’t see decent progression in game without being forced into certain grinds or having to make sure to log in every day and dodge around in an arrow carts aoe field.
Actually I like the dailies I can get most of it done except for gathering, crafting and events in my daily FotM runs, I just think they should make the laurels more universal and provide more ways to get them for more casual players, and that would also let players play the way they want to play like Anet always said it was going to be.

That’s your choice to do the dailies that way. I’ve done every daily since laurels were introduced, and most of the dailies before that. Never once have I done them the way you describe.
Also, after todays patch we’ll have optional dailies so you only have to do 5 of the 9 or 10 options they give us for that day.

That’s because you have a different play style, some people play differently than you. This game was supposed to cater to all different styles of play.
I do mostly FotM trying to get my fractal greatsword that I want so bad and keep getting every weapon BUT the GS, so after spending my time doing that (which I choose to do) I am forced to run to Queensdale just like the poster above and get my dailies done.
That is exactly why I think I should be able to exchange dungeon tokens, fotm relics, skill points etc…. any of the 100 different currencies for one universal currency and acquire the new ascended gear. That way no matter what you enjoy doing you can still make your way to the desired goal.
Yes, lets make everything transferable somehow so ultimately we can just buy whatever we want with real money. Because if you follow this suggestion to its eventual conclusion that is where we find ourselves.
|Daredevil|Ranger|Guardian|Scrapper|Necromancer|Berserker|Dragonhunter|Mesmer|Elementalist
|Deadeye|Warrior|Herald|Daredevil|Reaper|Spellbreaker
Where does real money come in to this at all?
I know I’ve already said how I felt in this thread already, but I just got word that a few of my friends want to come back to the game — I don’t know even know where to begin explaining all of this to them. The only thing I could say to one of them is, “choose a main character because it’s the only one you’ll be able to fully gear”.
The OP isn’t asking for an easy way out, he’s suggesting freedom to every type of player to get the same rewards.
And let’s be real, even if the price of these were reduced by over 50%, that’s still a lot when you take into consideration that a single char will often have multiple types of gear for different situations/specs and that most people have more than one character.
Basically, somethings needs to change because we haven’t even hit weapons/armor yet and it’s already looking grim.
