Hello and welcome everbody!

I just got 2 short questions about the Mystic Forge, since I am currently trying to craft a precursor using lvl 80 rares.

Question 1.
Does the level of the Character (1-80) matter for the process? (Any difference at the result between lvl 1 character or lvl 80 character)

Question 2.
Does Magic Find increase the chances of getting a precursor with crafting at the Mystic Forge?

It would be great if some of you nice fellas could answer me those two question, thanks in advance!

Have a great day!

Answer 1.
No, the character level does not matter. It’s the item level that is the key.

Answer 2.
No, magic find will not help at the mystic forge.

I read someplace a long time ago , that named exotics would have a better chance , than for example a pearl whatever that is crafted.
Also , that the average level of the items needs to be 77,. so do not put in 4 level 75 items.

That’s not true, as far as I know. A named exotic is still just an exotic.

Right, its not true. In a previous thread, someone asked about methodology concerning the MF. I wrote that I use only named exotics, with my results being that in an eight month time span I got 4 precursors by doing that. But I was not necessarily advocating that. However, what I did not state(and no one asked) was how many times I tried it. (once a day for about 7 months) 98% of the time, it does not work for me. I have gotten a precursor from random junk exotics.

Actually I read the same thing from a Dev 6-8 months ago, that some exotics have a slightly higher chance than others… Not that it matters because it doesn’t feel like there is a difference anyway.

Does anyone have a Red Tagged source for this affirmation? I have heard rumors but would like to see that ANet post from 6-8 months ago. Thanks

Yes. Level 80 exotics do have a better chance than the <80 ones. That’s the only factor.

I wish you the best of luck OP. Many have lost hundreds if not thousands in the Mystic Forge hoping for a precursor. Most people will suggest just saving up the money you would have spent on Rare weapons and buying the precursor directly.

Any source for that?

As far as i know, the only requirement on the weapons thrown in is that they have a combined level of 300, so 4 level 75 weapons will do, or 3 lvl 80 and a lvl 60 weapon.

As soon as you gain access to the mf loot tables (general or type specific) with the precursors on, it doesnt matter anymore, what you have thrown in or any other account or character detail like magic find, level, time of date, buffs, transformations etc.

Exotics do give a higher chance, but the only reason they give a higher chance is because when you use 4 rares, you roll the entire rare loot table and the exotic table, when you use 4 exotics you only roll the exotic table, thus resulting in a higher chance, other than that, its purely down to RnG.

Neither of those statements is true.

  • The skin of the inputs doesn’t matter.
  • The published research shows that — to get an L80 output (including precursors) — the average level of items can be 75. Thus four level 75s are fine as would be three L80s + one L60 (a frequent combination, using three crafted 80s and the often cheap L60). (The inputs have to be rare or exotic, with rares being more efficient on a cost basis and exotics having a higher rate to return a precursor.)

More often than not I throw in 4 lvl 80 (named) exotics and I get back a level 76 generic exotic. I cry every time. ;_;

so now I just throw in the rare weapons I get as drops and sell/salvage/save my exotics.

Not worth it.

No dev has ever said named exotics, specifically, give you a better chance at a precursor. Now, back before they changed the Mystic Forge, the named exotics could give you a better chance at one because they were all level 80; and so, putting four named exotics in would guarantee a level 80 return. But the same thing would happen if you put in four non-named level 80 exotics. Regardless of that, since the change to the forge, even putting in four level 80 exotics won’t guarantee a level 80 item return.

Nope, 4 lvl 80 exotics does not guarantee you get a lvl 80 back.

I usually wind up getting a lvl 76 or 78 back from 4 lvl 80 exotics.

I never said anything about named ones vs non, I said “that some exotics have a slightly higher chance than others”, I would find the post where it was said if I could remember the thread name with a functioning forum search engine.

Please don’t put words in my mouth then base your own argument off it.

(also read the thread where people talk about the changes that have happened to the forge)

You’re right; I assumed you were talking about named exotics. That’s my bad. But I still maintain that no dev has ever made a post saying that certain exotics, outside of putting four level 80 ones in back before the forge was changed, have a better chance at giving a precursor.

As for your italicized addition, huh? I mentioned the changes to the forge in the same post you quoted. So, I’m not sure what you mean there.
