Mystic Forge Currency
Did it say new currency, or just currency?
This is what the Official Blog states:
Items and activities that were previously repeatable sources of skill points will now also provide that same crafting material.

I am interpreting that to mean Scrolls of Knowledge (with new item name), however they were obtained previously (see acquisition here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Scroll_of_Knowledge).

Because the Mastery training bar completely replaces the experience bar, players who’ve reached level 80 will no longer gain levels but will instead train Masteries. This means characters that have reached level 80 will no longer gain skill points through leveling. Skill points will be added as rewards across high-level content to offset this change.
They’ll just add it as a renamed “new” currency reward to higher level content. I imagine any content that can give enough exp for a full level (dungeon explorable, fractals, etc.) will also award a mystic forge “skill” point at the end.
In the livestream, they seem to have indicated that what we now call ‘skill points’ will be renamed and stored in the wallet, instead of in the hero’s panel under the skill tab.
My interpretation is:
- Any excess skill points on any character (beyond those from leveling or skill challenges) will be converted to the new currency, as we logon each new character. This is similar to how dyes and skins were added to the wardrobe.
- Any unconsumed skill point scrolls will still be scrolls (renamed to the new currency) and consuming them will increment the wallet appropriately.
- Any experience beyond L80 will also go towards adding this currency, possibly at the same rate as today.
- This currency will be used for purchasing things like bloodstone shards, mystic crystals, philosopher stones, etc. (The same as we use excess SPs today.)
Left unanswered:
- What happens to SPs (and gold) that people spent to unlock traits?
- What happens to SPs that people spent to unlock skills early for lower-level characters?

Where did you people get the idea that it would be a currency?
“Old skill points in excess of those earned by leveling and skill challenges will be converted into crafting materials for the Mystic Forge. Items and activities that were previously repeatable sources of skill points will now also provide that same crafting material.”
Crafting material. See that?

You’re behind the news. The livestream they did a day or two ago gave more information. All skill points in excess of 1-80+skill challenges are being converted into a wallet currency used to purchase the items from minami or whoever the npc is next to the forge. IE really no different than now.
@Na, my guess, based on what I’ve read from dulfy’s ls notes, spending points into a specialization helps unlock those skill categories. IE for engis, there’s a spec aimed at gadgets, which means spending some points into that spec (not necessarily choosing to use it) will unlock the gadget category skills.
I hope that the scroll of knowledge “issue” is clarified before the update hits, I am a bit worried that my stack of scrolls will be deleted.
