Mystic Forge is a lazy, boring, overused concept
I think it was created as the focal point of all crafting..it uses pieces from all crafting and other ingredients to create something entirely new. Not saying its a good idea, I can just see where they are coming from.
Just imagine that the Mystic Forge is a giant toilet down which you may flush money. Occasionally it backs up and you manage to get something good, but usually not.
If legendary weapons weren’t the product of the Mystic Forge it would have literally no useful purpose to the player.
The oldest game I ever played that had legendary weapons with stories attached to them… was Dungeons & Dragons. And I don’t mean this newfangled crap today, I’m talking about the early 1980s stuff. So it is not a new concept that needs to be explained to anyone at Anet, considering their lore writers used to write D&D material. I think you are right. The mystic forge is a rushed idea, and it is lazy. Currently it is like a giant, infected pimple on an otherwise great butt (the game).
I could not agree more with the OP.
I absolutely detest the mystic forge. Everytime I read something that involves the mystic forge I just glaze over, because I hate gambling. I abhor the idea that I cannot in some way control or better my odds and am instead faced with some cold calculated… calculator!
Gather these items, throw them in, cross your fingers and hope for the best; this should be the new tagline for GW2 from what I’m reading with this lost shores dlc and acquiring equipment / progression.
I really hope I’m wrong, and this game breaks its addiction to the Mystic Forge… but I have a very bad feeling that I’m pretty right. If I am right, no thanks to what you’re selling ANet
(Sucks so much considering how long I’ve waited for this game… been there since the beginning. >.<!!!)

..this post makes little sense. The mystic force has many absolute recipes..you throw in a determined recipe and you get a specific item out of it. Check feasts, mystic weapons, armor boxes, volcanus..etc

My apologies, I’m really fussing about the fact that I’ve seen far too many people gambling on items such as precursors and what not. My rant is totally biased as I really dislike gambling systems in any game, but you’re right the Mystic Forge does offer set recipes.
You make some good points, therefore watch out, your thread is likely to get infracted. I got a thread of mine where I talked about how karma armor was a total waste of karma now that they have ascended armor and it got infracted with this:
“Threads posted for the sake of complaining are not allowed as they do not invite constructive discussion. Please refrain from creating such post in the future.”
Your complaining about the mystic forge and how it’s a poor mechanic and lazy design is completely valid. And for that they will remove your post because they simply don’t like people pointing out their shortcomings. To the moderators who will remove this, look up this word please: tyrannical.
I too think the Mystic Toilet is crutch. Why would any developer use so a crutch that is all about a Random Number Generator. What is also bad about it, is players now HAVE to rely on the Mystic Toilet and the very poor RNG sytem to get something good out of it at level cap.
I probly would have better luck in RL going to a slot machine, and getting something in return. IE. Breaking even or a litle more back then, getting anything good back in game using the Mystic Toilet.
I agree completely with the OP.
It would have been good as a way to dump unwanted items and occasionally get something nice back. Dyes, mats, etc are fine, but making it the only way to acquire legendary items? That’s just ridiculous, might as well call them Jackpot rarity items then.
I’m inclined to think that this gambling process wasn’t what ANet intended, but they didn’t have enough time to implement questlines etc per Legendary item, so they opted for the quickest way to still get them in the game, which was the Mystic Toilet.
If any developers are reading this: It would have been better to launch without Legendaries and add them later on with a story and specific difficult journey to get it.
It is the horadric cube. For the majority of players the crafting recipes will suffice. In the cube you’ll just throw left overs and gamble. Only the extremely rich can make the extremely expensive items as intended.
The cube worked the same way. Everyone knew how to upgrade runes and gems, just like everyone knows how to gamble gear. Everyone also knew the extremely good craftable sets but those were out of reach for most.
