Mystic forge..
Stay away from the Mystic Forge or it will consume your very soul
It’s RNG/gambling…it strictly depends on luck.
i mainly use it to combine rune and sigils to try and get one worth selling doesn’t work often but you get a ton of runes and sigils when you salvage equipement so it saves space
I use the MF to turn blue and green armor into cloth armor, turn green weapons and armor into rare weapons and armor, and sigils and runes into exotics that sell for less than half of each rare rune/sigil I threw in in the blatantly futile effort to get one of the 3-4 good runes/sigils instead of the 40 or so completely pointless ones.
I got 4 precursors in one month once in MF and not a single one ever more.
Outside of gambling MF can be used for creating items. e.g. Infinite Light sword or Volcanus gs can only be created in MF.
Right now, I’m using the MF to convert T5 mats to T6 for my legendary, and I also made a nice profit this past weekend by converting a batch of the more profitable cores I had on hand into the most profitable lodestones; I made a bit of a killing on charged lodestones.
Here’s a good example for ya. I put in 200 swords and got Zap. Then I flushed 1500 GS and got zilch.
..being a cynical forecaster.
..being a doom-monger….and being a hopeless jinxer.
Two things. Either promoting items like armor/weapons/sigils, hoping to get something much better and make a profit off of it or promoting materials for the same reason. And a very minor use of actually making special items.
Now forging for profit has essentially been wiped out. The 20% promote for items means on average it takes 16 of one quality to make 1 of the next higher quality. Taking into account the 15% cut from the TP, you need the higher quality item to be at least 18.9x the cost of the 16 items you tossed in. The only item I know with a gap wide enough is masterwork to rare runes and it’s a whole lot of clicks for very little money.
Most are tossing in rare or exotic weapons in hope for a precursor. Some have suggested that the price precursors sell for reflect the cost of creating them this way.
RIP City of Heroes
I primarily toss in all the rares and low priced exotics I get. Partially to unlock skins, and for a chance to get something cool, like a precursor.
I don’t buy them, but just use the ones I get as drops. Silverwastes and world boss tours are great for getting rares. Sometimes it pays off, and I get a cool/expensive exotic, other times not so much. I usually end up salvaging a single rare that I’m left with after forging and get some ecto, but thats about it.
It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”
Yesterday I put in 4 self crafted giver’s pearl daggers, got some random named exotic. Used that named dagger and three more crafted daggers and got Spark on my second attempt.
So I’m happy with the forge, but results may vary.
The correct term is “mystic toilet”. You put useless things in it and in return you get other useless things, in smaller quantity.
If ANET declared a “Kill Zommoros Day”, all GW2 servers would crash because everyone would attempt to log on to participate. It would be the ultimate stress test.
If ANET declared a “Kill Zommoros Day”, then all maps would be empty except for 9000+ Lion’s Arch Overflows.
It is said that King Adelbern would publicly make out (tongue and all) with any Charr that delivers him the head of Zommoros. Because even mobs hate Zommoros.
One day, Hitler and Zommoros participated in a popularity contest. Hitler won.
I really do not like using the mystic forge. Rng is not my favorite.
What i do instead is just salvage every and all items i do not need for that magic find increase. I keep the materials for crafting because i much rather craft gear that i know i am going to get than bet it all on the MF.
There are special weapons made from mystic forge recipes; you can look those up on the wiki.
I gamble occasionally. When I have enough T5 mats, I craft rare weapons to throw in. I know I’d make more gold from selling the raw materials, but I like to gamble. Sometimes I get a few exotics out, sometimes not. Sometimes I throw my rares from the world bosses in, sometimes I salvage them for ectos. Gambling is just fun occasionally and there is a very small chance that you’ll get something worth a fair amount of gold.
I only use it for combining rare sigils and runes that I salvage out of the rares in the vain hope of getting good exotic runes and sigils. Overall, I’m probably a bit ahead considering the lovely runes I’ve gotten out of it. Back when Divinity runes were a thing, I got 2 in a couple of days which was a nice 20g profit. I’ve been occasionally lucky in getting sigils and runes that are at the peak of their price. Melandru’s when they were going for 13g, Force when they were 5g, etc. Given that rares sell on the TP for between 3 and 6 silver, it’s actually pretty profitable.
I also use it for fixed recipes like mystic salvage kit creation, the occasional t5 – t6 mat promotion, which I’ll have to get into again with the new precursor system coming up, the occasional high end exotic skin.
Hmm, I might get start stocking up mystic clovers.
I just throw rares (I earn playing, not bought off TP) when I am not in need of ectos and feel to test my luck a little. That one exotic is sure more valuable than selling the 4 ugly rares anyway (most of the time)

I honestly don’t know what the fractal I’m doing with it either. I do have a method though:
1. I throw in major sigils I collect in hopes of getting a superior sigil. I tend to throw away minor sigils though since the chance feels so low just to get another piece to toss in again.
2. I throw in my greens (masterwork) gear in hopes of a rare although I salvage green cloth gear for the materials. I also salvage all blues and whites for materials and luck.
3. Any rare armor I get I look to sell it or salvage it for ectos (most of the time they’re salvaged). Any rare weapons get thrown back in for a chance at an exotic weapon (never know, might even get a precursor) or sold if the price is high enough. Exotic weapons get sold or thrown in the pot again to collect their skin.
4. Upgrade stacks of materials.
It’s definitely not the way to make the most gold, but I’m aiming for skins right now.
I only throw greens in there. Sometimes I get a rare to sell or salvage. I haven’t done the math but I seem to make more that way than by salvaging and getting worthless essences of luck (worthless because it doesn’t really do much) or mats such as leather or mithril.
ANet may give it to you.
When there’s a mystic forge daily I buy cheap 19 c sigils/runes and do the forging. Or like today, as a couple of my dungeon/fractal alts are low on salvage kits, I make a mystic salvage kit. Maybe 3 or 4 times I’ve tossed in four rare weapons on the off chance, but I haven’t even gotten exotics back and that tends to dissuade me from lengthier attempts.
Minor sigils and runes sell to NPCs. Majors into the forge. Rare weapons that sell for more than an ecto go to the TP. Those that do not are salvaged or flushed down the toilet. All armor is either salvaged or flushed for potential skins and upgrades.
