I saw a thread in the BLTC section that asked if we remembered when 15 dollars got us 3 new missions and weapon skins that were usable by all characters on our account (he is referring to GW1 btw). It got me thinking about some very nostalgic things I could share about this game during the demo phase.
Do you remember when…
…characters had a energy (mana) pool?
…there were health and energy (mana) potions?
…the world map looked like THIS?
…each major city had custom map icons like these?
…the map looked artistic and awesome?? (btw that is Gendarran fields at the bottom)
I sure remember these things and I miss a lot of them.
Below are some of the screenshots of the GW2 demo that I took with developer permission at PAX East in March of 2011. In case you didn’t know, these screenshots that I took were the FIRST actual high-resolution screenshots ever taken and put online for this game. It sparked a lot of excitement on the GuildWars2Guru forums when I posted them.
If you have something of nostalgic interest please share!!!

I remember
*when the mini map was round.
*when you had as many people as you do now doing Fire Elemental that it would slaughter you anyways.
I remember
;)
I remember
- When engineers wore heavy gear
- When there was talk about mobile/web apps for keeping in touch with guildies, posting and retrieving in TP, and checking mail, there was even talk of seeing friends locations on the mobile/web apps so we could easily join them.
- When our home city was to reflect our adventures.
;)
Excellent post. They still haven’t given us any updates on those mobile apps.
I remember when
You could have multiple Classes on one character and you could swap them around at will!
There were hundreds of skills to choose from and capture from bosses that were actually hard to fight..
I could make builds on the fly, share them with friends and actually have multiple builds saved..
The story was repeatable and was worth repeating…
Assassins and Ritualists walked Tyria..
You could run through Cantha and Elona
Waypoints were free and the Economy was not destroyed by Flippers..
Loot dropped freely, and the instance was yours alone..
Dungeons were actually fun and worth doing
I could actually Dye my weapons as well as my Armor…
(edited by Dante.1508)
I remember actually getting loot from most mobs that I killed. Those were the days RNG & DR didn’t plague the player-base. A time when the developers actually cared about their game and players.

Haha you are talking about GW1! I’m talking about gw2 =)

That was before the gem store too (go figure)
Nope sure don’t remember any of those. HOWEVER, I’m sure Pepperidge Farm Remembers.
I remember when gwen set everyone on fire and killed them back during the beta event for gw1… I miss little things like this….. I remember discovering that mursaat sucked to fight in general…. I remember the feeling when I first completed a droks run…. I remember my first set of 15k armor….
gw2 I remember the manifesto and all the hopes it brought…. Then I remember them being dashed against the rocks quiet splendidly a few months after launch.
Nope. Not that old to remember those. However I was around when…
PvP had paid tournaments.
PvP gave QP to winners of paid tournaments.
PvP had 8 team tournaments.
Unfortunately I wasn’t old enough to remember when pvp offered gems for winning tournaments.
But its an amazing step forward of where GW2 is now at today with all of its updates and tweaks. Its PvP game is very good now compared to the earlier days.
How about the butler golem? snakes in the grass? those silly dye seeds, and the NPC that would grow them for you in your home instance? the original box o’ fun? hunger games? how scary Gendarren Fields was when it was first available..lol? the previous size of mini-pets (they were much bigger, at first….screenshots of a mini-moa as tall as my asura)?
I miss the snakes….=P

+++++1
I remember getting dye seed drops and having to go to an NPC in my home instance in order to grow them (in 24 hours) into a dye color so I could use it. I remember plant food in the cash shop that you could use to accelerate this process. I’m glad they forgot it.

While I miss a lot of things from the demos, I can’t say that energy potions are one of them. The GW1 energy system was IMO very well done, but I can’t say the same about what they had intended for GW2. Neither do i miss the time when 60 seconds was considered a very short cooldown for a utility skill (while most of them had at least 120 seconds) and 12 minutes was the default for elites, which they changed about the same time that they got rid of the potions.
Excellent posts so far guys! Keep them coming!
I remember when…
- ppl didn’t know about 100b zerk-warriors and dungeons were actually harder to do.
- ascended gear and it’s riddicolous stats weren’t implemented.

I agree that Ascended gear was unnecessary.
I remember
-scheduling my day(s) around an opportunity to play one hour of laggy gw2 in a stress test
-watching demo videos of sparkfly swamp, and teq
- black lion keys dropping in beta… And 1k free gems-> the joy of aviators on a charr
-power orbs in wvw
-not having “deposit all collectables”
-not having preview
-The bar for endurance being where conditions are, with no divider in between splitting it in 2 so you can tell when to dodge
Edit: when morale was high and there weren’t so many negative Nancy’s, who despite apparently despising everything about the game still go on the forums

Do you remember when…
…characters had a energy (mana) pool?
Yeah, it’s called thief.
Seems they only kept it for this class, kinda sad to be honest. Actually thief ini might be one of the reason it got scrapped.
Remember when necro where op? /runsaway

Initiative and energy were two separate things. Energy was eventually removed from all professions.
I remember when the Guardian and Asura would be playable, and I instantly knew exactly what my main toon would be. I remember at the end of one of the BWE’s Collin had gathered everyone in Wayfarer’s and we all /sleep then kept spamming spacebar to sleep jump. I remember in BWE2 when I only played SPvP, and my Guardian was literally invincible, since Retaliation did so much damage, and Sword/Torch was hilarious. I remember when I was in Old Ascalon (before Factions came out) and GW2 was rumored, and confused with GW: Utopia (which ended up being NF I believe)

weird having in mind that GW2 launched with gem store and GW1 had it as well. -_-
I remember when…
I saw Divinity’s Reach for the first time, in Beta and thinking, “Wow…”

I also remember discovering how important repairing was!
http://www.mejuba.com/albums/tasaunders/134502/5127827/show/original
A good thing too, because I remember the first time Shadow Behemoth spawned and thought to myself, “Oh sh…!”

Finally, I remember the Hunger Games event (this really needs to come back as a playable mode, IMO).

I remember the first time I ventured into the Charr areas and took a loot at the remains of the wall…. and got so GW1 homesick that I logged out of GW2 to go play it. XD
I remember when Mesmers where Mesmers, and control meant something. (GW1 nostalgia)
Game’s not even hit its first anniversary and we’ve already go the “Vanilla GW2 was soooo much better” crowd, eh? ;P

It has been nearly a year since the game was released to the public. The game has been in development since 2007 and has been playable as early as 2010 at the gaming conventions. The game has changed a lot since its initial unveiling in 2010. Some of that older content was better than the stuff we have now.

These two statements haunt me. I remember too.
I also remember;
Its ready, when its ready.
So im hoping that one statement was a lie, and that Anet remembers your 2 points as well as I do for future expans and updates. Unfortunately it does seem like Anet thinks of the DE system as something ‘to be proud of’. Yes there’s a few chains that are impressive, however most are hollow and do little storytelling. And then there’s the fact that very little change the world in meaningful ways.
