Well how often do you plane on changing your name? A name is far more then just a look changes. There also other ppl who wants names that you may be holding by spamming name changes. So this is a good price because it keeps ppl from doing it over and over.

It’s fine, could even be more expensive imo. You now have an option to rename your character if you really, really screwed up during creation but it’s not an offensive name so ANet won’t rename you, or you just want to get rid of it for some reason, maybe because you broke up with your gf or whatever. You’re not supposed to rename all your chars all the time, be glad they added this option at all.

I’ve been waiting for this item, and 800 is a fair price. it’s basically the only time you’ll use it, much like server transfer. and how much are those?

Agreed. I suppose they just wanted it as an “oops” fixer or for people who changed their characters’ gender. It seems like you can only use it once per character anyway?

It’s actually once per contract. Not once per character.

I had to read that twice too, I guess they mean that the name change contract is only usable once, but not once per character. Maybe they’ll clear this up.

At gold-to-gem rate, that’s 16 gold to change your name. That doesn’t sound too bad to me.

Ah! That is a bit confusing then.

In other MMOs, I’ve seen various explanations why they wanted to discourage frequent renames. They’re kind of a pain to manage, apparently. This pricing reflects that – they want the service to be available in emergencies, but don’t want us using it frivolously. This is a penalty fee, not a product that they’ll try to push.

$10 or 16-17g to change your name. That’s not that bad at all. I think most MMOs charge $15 for a name change.

I guess you have to put it this way…is it worth the same as an extra alt slot?

I wish it was cheaper, but I think this is a fair enough price that it’s worth considering.

Yeah pretty expensive. Just to make sure I understand, doing this allows you to change all names on your acct if you want, or just one toon?

It allows you to change ONE name on ONE character, ONCE

True, but I think many, like myself, believe those prices are too high and not a value. Consumers commonly will buy something multiple times if they perceive they are getting a value and avoid purchases that are not a value. I think many players would like to match all their characters with common surnames but will not consider it because of the cost; no sale. But if it was a value many more would purchase the name change; and purchase more name changes in the future. 1$ mobile apps sell very easily because they are cheap and a easy impulse buy. I think if they cut the cost in half, or more, they would more than double their sales, now and steadily for the future. It would likely increase sales to their whole consumer base, instead of a small percentage, making them more inclined to make other purchases.

Anet actually employs professionals to crunch price-point math for things like this… and the demand for a service like this is not that elastic.

As someone said above regular name changes are a pain for MMO developers, so it’s unlikely Anet are looking at this as a product to push for as many sales as possible.

Like world transfers, I think the price reflects the fact that it’s intended to be something you use when you need it, not something you buy on impulse to play around with.

Personally I think they’ve done a good job of hitting a price most people could afford when they need it whilst making it expensive enough that you’ll think twice before you do.

The pricing is decent in my opinion. Other mmos and games have it about this price or higher.

Plus players in other games would be thrilled to pieces to be able to purchase these kinds of services with ingame gold.

OP, you can always wait for a Black Lion sale on this item if you think it’s too much.

I think the gold-to-gem rate is way to expensive, 800 gems is not expensive, just the fact the gold I earned would all be gone if I wanted to change a name.

IRL name changes are expensive too!
