Ncsoft- City of Hero's-and Guild Wars 2
What guarantee do we have that now or in the future ,Ncsoft won’t do the same with this game regardless if there making money or not ?
You have none. Even if NCSoft said they wouldn’t do it, that’s a promise they’ll hold to only so long as they want to.
Right now, Guild Wars 2 is about to release in China (as I recall). The Asian market is huge, and I think that’s where NCSoft is looking to make most of their money. If GW2 doesn’t do well over there, then they’ll consider shutting it down to put more of their money behind a game that does.
In theory, Arena Net has things set up so that they can buy themselves out, and become separate from NCSoft. Paragon Studios (the group behind City of Heroes) was trying to do the same thing, though, and some people think that’s part of the reason why NCSoft just walked in and shut them down. If NCSoft does the same “walk in and fire everyone” move on ANet, then they’ll have no chance to split off and survive.
So, there you go. No promises at all, but it’s far more likely to be axed if it doesn’t do well in Asia. Keep that in mind whenever you think about spending further money on the game in the form of gems or a second account.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
I doubt NCSoft would pull the plug on the largest income source they have. City of Heroes had a medium population compared to most MMOs and was by far not one of NCSoft’s largest revenue sources, so from an economic standpoint it isn’t surprising. After the City of Heroes fiasco, however, I doubt NCSoft would even consider damaging their reputation as a publisher further by pulling the plug on a massive game like Guild Wars 2.
No one knows the internal workings or conflict inside a company. All we know is what’s told to us…and it’s never everything.
CoH was a great game. It should still be going strong…but for some reason NcSoft closed it down. Why would that be? If you were making money from something why would you shut it down? There has to be a reason…we just don’t know the reason.
It could have been a disagreement at a management level that they couldn’t resolve. It could have been other things as well. In the end, we just don’t know.
But we do know that Guild Wars 2, so far at least, is one of NCSoft’s top selling games. No one can tell what the future will bring though.
So Anet I got ? City of Hero’s had been around for 8 years, with a very healthy population and was making money on the game. Despite that, out of the clear blue with little warning even the publisher got very little warning, Ncsoft pulled the plug on the servers……
Pressing the bullkitten alarm. Do you have any evidence of the bolded statement? I have yet to see a publisher, no matter how crappy in general they are, pull the plug on a profitable venture. That just doesn’t happen. It’s the exact antithesis of investing in something, which is the core essence of what publishers do. It would be the rough equivalent of a surgeon shooting a patient in the head in the middle of a very successful procedure.
I’m ready to believe quite a lot of nasty things about publishers and “business people” in general, namely that most of them are Machiavellian, “the end always justifies the means”, to the core, but one thing I’m not buying is that they’d strangle an healthy cash cow.
As for the rest: None. I have quite a bad past experience with NCSoft, and yes, my investiment in GW2 may blow up in my face. So far the signs point to NCSoft’s and ANet’s relationship being quite functional, so I’ll take it.

this article say’s alot I really feel Ncsoft was just being kitten……….
If gw2 flops and ends up being shut down, first im going to laugh. Then im going to log onto GW1 and enjoy seeing a healthy population again
That’s all subjective. They shut it down because it wasn’t profitable. Simple as that.

Have we forgotten Tabula Rasa and Auto Assault so quickly?
There was a time when, with just those two games, NCsoft represented something like half of all dead major-release MMOs. It’s a very scary prospect indeed to invest time and effort into something that may be shut down like that, and NCsoft is as willing to do it as anybody, but I guess that’s the risk you take.
Don’t get me wrong I loathe the idea of NCsoft profiting off of me, but I’m willing to deal with their crappy practices if the product is good enough.
Priorities, what to do?
