Okay background as quickly as possible lol.

Played guild wars obsessively for 4 years straight, was amazing at it and loved it. Them a friend swayed me toward wow. Found it a bit more versatile and it was fun to try something new, so that eventually won me over.

When guild wars 2 came out I was SO excited, but I only played for about 2 weeks before quitting. It was nothing like the old game is known and loved, and I was already built up in wow.

So now I’d like to start guild wars 2 again, but I’m debating whether it’s even worth it. Is there even a large community anymore? I’m on gate of madness at the moment and I feel so lonely even though it’s a high population server. Is there end game content that makes it worth starting the game?

It’s hard to get the motivation to start, because I have no clue what I’m doing and I don’t know ANYONE who plays anymore.

I was frustrated because I got so good at this game and invested so much time, and then they just rip it away and throw us into a new game that we have to learn all over again….

Anyone have any advice?

Best advice I can give as another GW1 vet is to change your expectations. GW2 is a completely different game based on the lore of the original. Once you accept that, the rest is actually pretty good.

You’ll get mixed reponses. I, for one, think the game is pretty boring and others will say it’s the best MMO they’ve ever played.

In a situation like this, play it yourself and see if you like it or not. You’ve already tried again and found that it’s not as fun.

End game is still the same as when you first started. You explore, do the dailies, farm some champs, and whatever else. There’s no 10/25 N/H raids, and there never will be.

Just give it a shot for a couple of days. You’ll know soon enough without having the die hard defenders and the people who don’t like it filling your thread swaying you.

I personally did not like GW1, so can’t compare. From the forums there is a die-hard section that can’t leave GW1 and hate GW2. You personally need to play the game. The mass of people have moved off of levelling so you will not see people in the exact same areas you are in. That said there has never been a case where a shout in map chat has not brought someone to help no matter what time of the day on my server (aurora glade).
As I said, play the game. Make up your own mind.

The game is boring and it looks like ANet has no idea how to fix it.

If you want another guild wars, go play more gw1.

Else stick to wow.

Here once you get to 80 you will have literally NOTHING to do. You will log in and than be like “wat now”. Unless you enjoy following the brainless zerg train in every part of the game. Then the game is perfect for you.

As a bit of advices look at the ppl who are posting negative things about this game past post you will find that they ONLY post negative things that what these forums are used for and nothing but.
Any way GW2 is not WoW so it will take time to get use to GW2 agen you must be active and not sit there and hit the same buttons in a set way over and over. To get the fullness of GW2 you need a guild you need an active guild who talks. If you just go though this game completing every thing with out talking and making friends your lost and far better off playing a single player game.
The nice thing in GW2 there is a lot of easy in being to play with whom you want and doing what event. You can make a pt of any class comp you can run with lower level often you can run with ppl who have better or wost gear and not be for the worst off because of it. If you got to be the best gear every GW2 is not for you. I think this may be your biggest leap from WoW to GW2.

My advice is just to get in game and try it. No one here can really tell you if you will enjoy it as we don’t really know you or what you like in a game. If you feel lonely on your server you can guest to a more populated server to see if you like the community there better. If you find a server you like better and are not too invested in your characters so far you can delete them and transfer to another server for free. Just make sure you bank all items that are not soul bound first.

Many people here will blindly tell you that you will not enjoy GW2 because this is the forums and that’s how they roll. I’m sure if you post in the PHP forum you will find some friendly players that wouldn’t mind showing you around and helping you out. I say hop in and give it a go.

I played GW1 for 7 years, the game is completely different, from open world PvE to closed non existent sPvP, WvW was ok until they destroyed it, if PvP isn’t your thing , then the open world PvE is massive,

End game doesn’t exist in this game at the moment, the lvl 80 zones are all dead, bar the small groups you will find running around 1 level 80 zone champion farming, the world bosses have all recently been altered, again it depends what you expect from the game,

If you play other games, and you have already bought it, then sure play it for like an hour a day, ( this what anet wants, casual players who only play an hour or 2 a day ) if you plan on making this your primary game, I strongly suggest you find another game to play aswell, as I don’t feel with all the changes in this game, its anything like they claimed it to be.

Guild Wars 2 is a game for causal players, its not an MMO game for people that want to grind, as the drops are non existent….

The above is my personal opinion, and mine alone.

So in WoW your not hitting the same buttons over and over? Just because there more to hit dose not make it any kitten ring and if you watch ppl who play games like WoW only hit a very few set of ability over and over in a set pattern.

Nice point. You just hit 1 once and then you find something to occupy about a minute’s worth of time and occasionally come back to hit 6. Not like you have to worry about any sort of mechanic or anything either.

In gw2 you stay in place and watch the auto attack animation while drinking coffe.

If you like dungeons…. we don’t have a dungeon team, other than that everything is perfectly fine.
We get regular updates, we have nice pvp system, classes are fairly balanced and gw2 is very different from other mmos since each class can use more than 1 weapon.

To be fair, I pay less attention in gw2 then playing any other game, especially when i’m in dungeon. Generally because I only have to rely on myself to survive instead of other players. And yes this is all content and there is nothing to back this up but I am pretty good.

There is the problem with letting go of any MMO. You have so much invested into the game that it is just a shame to leave it. Especially if it has a sub fee like WoW. WoW players dare not quit the game forever because it would be hundreds of dollars wasted on a 3-dimensional fantasy land + second life.

At least with Guild Wars 2 you can always come back to it without pulling out your purse/wallet.

I say OP give it a couple of tries. GW2 is the type of game that you can easily jump in and out of. Forget what people say about Ascended Armor because though it may be the best gear stat available , exotic armor is pretty much all you need.

If you get bored of playing with just one char, try an alt. I have had way more fun juggling alts in GW2 than ever.

There also doesn’t seem to be many new games out now that are getting my interest (MMO or not).

To the OP: The game has reached the point where the majority of highly active players are at “end game” state (eg. champ farming, dungeon farming, WvW, carrot chasing events etc). You’ll most likely only encounter players at the low levels or high level maps, since the rest are mainly empty.
If you want other players, either guest to a high population server (TC or Blackgate, I dunno which ones are actually high level population…) and/or join an active guild.

I can only speak for PvE here, I don’t PvP in either of the forms this game has.

First of all, you have to be willing to consider GW2 entirely on its own merits. If you compare it to any other games, including WoW or GW, you risk overlooking some of what makes GW2 what it is.

Second, if you really want to get to max level and best gear ASAP, then this game will disappoint. Yes, it’s easy to get to max level. Max gear? Hard, and getting harder sometime soon. But if you DO get the best gear… there’s nothing else for you to chase. You can do the living story updates, but they won’t actually advance you any. You’ll feel like a marathon runner that slammed straight into an invisible brick wall at the 1 mile mark.

Third, if you must complete every goal and get every shiny, run away. Quickly. New “Living Story” stuff is added every two weeks, and sooner or later you WILL miss something. Hell, you’ve already missed a lot of it.

Fourth, this game has RP in it, which is good. But the game itself isn’t really very RP friendly, which is profoundly disappointing. There are RPers and we do our best, but GW2 really isn’t the best place for RP. (Note: I’ve come from some VERY RP friendly games, so I may have different expectations than most players.)

But for fifth, there’s the positive side. While going at this game as a marathon run is bad, going at it as a casual stroll is great. You have to be just that, though. Casual. Wander around, see what’s going on. Talk to NPCs with names, and enjoy the sights. Take your time, ignore what you don’t want to deal with, and never stress out. If you can enter that mindset, the game is fun. There’s no rush to level 80, the content doesn’t really change for the high end, anyway. There’s a big game world to explore, and some fun to be had if you go out and find it.

So… yeah. If you stress, obsess, or strive to excel, you might want to stay away. If you want to play to just relax and have some fun wandering around a pretty game world and smacking grawl, then load it up and give it another shot.

GW1 had it right as far as gearing up goes (easy to get max stats, hard/harder to get nice looking armor).

I also think GW1’s storytelling was better.

However, I vastly prefer GW2’s combat and the addition of a Z axis has opened up one of my favorite activities, jumping puzzles. Character creation is also much better/more robust and the dye system is better x 1,000. Exploration is super rewarded (both in the form of hidden chests and just from a, “Wow, gorgeous thing I wouldn’t have otherwise seen” sense.

My server is still hopping so from my perspective, game is still plenty full.

Well after +3k hours of playtime, I still log in and play most days. I still find the game fun. If you play all aspects of the game PvE, PvP, and WvW there’s a lot of end game. I think most people tend just to stick with only one, and then just get bored of the game. If I only played one type of content, I’d probably have quit by now.

I’m a long time Guild Wars 1 player.

The things that made Guild Wars 1 a great game are completely absent here. Because of that, people who love Guild Wars 1 often come to Guild Wars 2 expecting the same thing…and rightfully so. It’s a sequel.

I came here NOT expecting the same thing, because I did a lot of research before the game started. I knew it would be more dynamic, that there’d be less skills over all, and that many of them are tied to a weapon. I knew that build wars was done. It was more about your reflexes and how you play.

If you try to play this game like Guild Wars 1 (or like WoW for that matter), you’ll probably not enjoy it. If you play this game like a new game, then you might well enjoy it.

This game has plenty of good things about it and plenty of bad things….pretty much like every game. Me, I find the bad things aren’t as significant to me as the good things and I have a blast.

You should try to find a guild of like minded players. It’s the best way I’ve found to enjoy the game.

As someone who played the original Guild Wars for such a long time, I am pleased to say that Guild Wars 2 a completely re-visioned sequel that is faithful to the lore and fun of it’s predecessor. The game is drastically changed in that it isn’t so linear, you can jump, dodge, explore a massive map with very few portals (most is completely open world). Instead of competing, the mechanics actually reward everyone and you’re actually happy when someone shows up and helps you kill an enemy.

If you liked the original, I think you will very much enjoy Guild Wars 2. It takes what made the original so fulfilling and improves just about every aspect you can think of. Visuals, open world, full voice acting, different playable races, more collectibles, instant grouping etc.

The best advice I can give is to try the game for yourself during one of the free trials and see how it works out for you. If you come to the forums you will get a lot of biased opinions. Many people who want to see the game fail will tell you to avoid the game. People who are really into the game will tell you otherwise. Most people I think are indifferent in this and won’t tell you anything.

Basically, try the game out and make up your own mind.

Well, I think it was worth the money. It definitely has problems though; a lot of boneheaded problems that shouldn’t exist, but pretty solid scenery and the gameplay takes a bit getting used to but is pretty simple once you get it down.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Yup, with their superior decision making, ANet made sure endgame is more /facepalm than your standard MMO fare, and i did quite a bit of standard MMO fare.

At this point tehy look like geese in a fog, lost, just wandering around and not really aware what/where thyere going.

Colin Johanson: “Everyone, including casual gamers, by level 80 should have the
best statistical loot in the game. We want everyone on an equal power base.”

Best advice to not feel lonely on any server regardless of population: make friends, find a good guild.

If you don’t have people to play with and just try to solo everything the game gets boring really fast.

In gw2 you stay in place and watch the auto attack animation while drinking coffe.

SOOO ACTIVE.

Go into a dungeon with that kind of playstyle and you will be destroyed.

Oh thanks for reminding me about easy mode dungeons that thiefs solo naked.

I have never been to a dungeon, thanks man I will make sure to try them.
