It’s safe to say that most people who’ve been playing for a few months now are pretty familiar with the game, done most of the stuff to do enough that it’s lost some of it’s charm, and are starting to catch glimpses of other, fresh games. I still enjoy playing, but I have done most of the things I want to do, and the past month have been pretty much just logging in to do daily’s, and I might find a way to fill in another half hour or so before I log out. I liked the daily’s for one reason: laurels. I like laurels for one reason: Dye. And in the beginning, it went pretty well. The first set I bought I got a midnight ice. The second set I got a midnight fire and another rare (frost I think). My third set I got 2 rares (blue and a gray I think). My gf got a red rare her first set, and a blue rare the second set. The third set she got a white and a bluish rare.
So I’m thinking, okay, this is cool. It should only be a few months till we both have the color’s we want on most of our toons. Neither of us are interested in anything else offered on the laurel vendor. Gear is too random (you get stuff you might not even use in your chosen spec), T6 too blah, ascended stuff, gag me.

So what’s my beef? They nerf’d the rare dye in laurel’s. On both our accounts, the past 6 purchases (combined), we have gotten zero rare dye. Yeah, RNG is random and all that bullcrap, whatever. They nerfed it because they want people to buy the dye packs on the store. I get that, it’s fine. We both buy stuff from there, I have 3 slots and a half dozen inv expansions. She buys clothes (gag), and we’ve both bought one dye set. It isn’t worth it to purchase dye in the store. Too expensive, not account-wide.

Anet, make your money selling stuff people WANT, and at a reasonable price! We dont WANT boxing gloves, or str boosters, or mini’s. 95% of everything is too expensive by half! We would gladly give you guys more of our money (real cash, not gold, we spend it too fast) if the ROI seemed worth it. And making it harder (longer, more expensive in-game and out) to get the things we want (like rare dye, slots, inv, repair cannisters, BLKit’s, etc) makes us want to play less. This is a dangerous thing for a game with no subscription. If I get hooked on some other shiny game, you guys won’t be seeing any money from me for a while. If ever.

I have multiple characters, and each one gives me a reason to play. But if you take away some of those reasons by making the game less rewarding, I will find it harder and harder to log in. Daily’s are not ‘fun’. They are something relatively easy we can do that allows us, over time, to get things we want in game. The time we spend each week/month doing them is no longer worth it for our two accounts. Whatever. I vented, and I feel better, despite knowing ANet doesn’t read rant posts, and that even if they did, they don’t care about a couple people out of the many.

People were making a lot of money selling the rare dyes. Anything that makes people a ton of money they nerf. Thats how it is in f2p games, sadly.

I’m just going to guess what this rare dye you’re talking about is the unidentified dye. If that is the case, i’m just going to say, no they didn’t nerf it. The unidentified dyes you get from the merchant are the same ones you can buy or get as a drop. You have to remember, when you open one of these you’re opening for a chance of getting 1 dye out of 403. So obviously, it’s not hard to hit a bad streak where you don’t get any rare dyes at all.

Strange, I’ve been getting dyes from early on, too, and I’ve seen the opposite results. Terrible luck early, but getting more rares recently. I think what you’re seeing is just a proper distribution.
I think what you’re not understanding is that the item “Unidentified dye” is the same no matter where you obtain it from. There is no special one from the gem store that guarantees you higher rarity dyes. All unIDs are created equal.

Maybe you guys need to start recording your dye results instead of throwing about claims of RNG nerfs; it’s the very nature of RNG to be… you know… random. People end up seeing patterns where there arn’t, as other people’ve said some have observed an opposite trend which suggests to me that more data is needed before you crack out the torches and pitchforks.

The human brain is mighty good at finding patterns and outside agency where there isn’t any.

I had 41 of em saved up thinking I might want to make the legendary staff. Gave up on that so I opened all of them. 8 rares out of the bunch. With a white and abyss dye. I was happy happy happy. Sold them all. Put 16 gold in the bank and bought another 41. Opened those and got another abyss. Sold that and thought not to keep pushing my luck.

I bought 10 unid’s from the laurel vendor and got Abyss and Midnight Fire out of those 10. Two of the best looking dyes in the game, and with my rotten luck that’s saying something.

The math – well it’s just better than 20% chance of hitting a rare from an unid dye. Still, better than 0.2%. It’s the same with chance of rares in the mystic toilet, toss 4 in and 20% chance of getting an exo. What is it with this game’s RNG and 20% figure.. coincidence? o.0

Of course this assumes all dyes are weighted equally. That there is exactly the same chance of getting one worth 1g as one worth only 1s.

As far as we know each fine has a weight of 10, every master 5 and every rare 1.

This topic is just plain terrible. Like what. Like seriously. Please check this fact out:

“So I’m thinking, okay, this is cool. It should only be a few months till we both have the color’s we want on most of our toons.”

Alright. seems reasonable. Then:

“Yeah, RNG is random and all that bullcrap, whatever.”

Indeed, and that’s why you don’t have to rely on RNG. Let’s see the raw numbers:

If you do 5 dailies, it equals 5 laurels which equals 10 unidentified dyes as you very well know. You can sell these 10 unid dyes in TP for guaranteed 1 gold 50 silver, maybe even a bit more.

At the time of this post there are whopping 6 dyes out of 403 that are above the price of 1 gold 50 silver (namely abyss, celestial, midnight fire/ice, black and white). So there it is. Only 397 possible dyes are available for you after doing five dailies. Surely it’s hard to get colors you want on your toons.

Also I love your logic that when when you got lots of rares in the beginning it was “cool” and now when you did not it must have been “nerfed”. No, it’s RNG in the works right there.

http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/20356 clearly nerfed.
http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/20359 this too.
http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/20517 these increased price trends are so dramatic.

The dyes are the only things I have any interest in from the Laurel vendor too. Every 5 Laurels, time for dyes. I’ve gotten as many as 5 rares out of the 10. Got a Celestial. There have been a couple batches where I didn’t get a single rare, but the times where I get multiple rares balances it out.

Arenanet is obsessed with the gem store to an degree that is killing the game. I know! The only things I buy from the gem store are BL salvage kits and karma boosters. And I only use 1 karma booster a month, after I’ve saved up all my karma pots from the monthly/dailies, orrian jewelry boxes etc, with a banner and ice cream.

But…they do have me at gems for gold. I buy gems to sell for gold. That seems to be there best use right now.

The store has nothing I would buy gems for on purpose. It’s almost as if someone is being lazy and just saying, meh, no need for there to be cool stuff in the gem store, enough suckers buy gems to sell for gold – it’s all good.

Step 1: ANet does nothing
Step 2: thousand of players open a couple unidentified dyes in the world
Step 3: laws of the big numbers assure us a significant portion of those thousand of players will roll many rares before ANet did nothing, and no rares after
Step 4: most of those players are completely ignorant of the gambler’s fallacy

End result : every week that Anet did nothing (so, every week in fact), on average you get one post saying they nerfed the dyes.

You can replace “dyes” with “dragon chests” and “salvage ectos” and “mystic forge” freely, it works too.

That’s a pretty harsh attitude to take, especially when you can buy everything in the gem shop without spending a single dime of real money. Plenty of people buy things from the gem shop. Apparently they are happy with the costs and are getting the revenue they want.

Also GW2 is B2P, not F2P. Cash shop is an additional revenue source on top of the box sales. In a F2P game it is the only source of income, meaning a much greater emphasis.

I haven’t had a dye drop in weeks. I would say it was just RNG, but I think it’s with everyone. My guildies have mentioned it as well.

There’s no difference between GW2 and a F2P beyond the initial fee, and if everyone in the game was using gold to buy gems, Arenanets financial model would fail. As has been said before, they will nerf anything that becomes a significant gold income source for players. In the end, it’s no different from a subscription game, because on the financial back end, they are trying to push people to pay a given amount of real money per month (probably about $15 I would guess).
I consider it a realistic attitude. Arenanet released the game before it was ready, which is very likely due to executives promising profits far sooner than coders/artists could physically deliver. The result is a partially finished F2P game that has an upfront cost.

It’s an attitude held by a lot of narrowminded, entitled players.

Instead of being grateful that there’s an alternate method to acquire cash shop items via an exchange of in game currency, they choose to complain how this exchange isn’t good enough for them.

Can’t really feel any sympathy for such attitudes.

Actually, that’s wrong. The gold=>gem price is decided by the players themselves. If suddenly the gold income of players increases a lot, they’d buy a lot of gems, then the gem price will skyrocket to the point that buying gems to sell them for gold would be worth it again.

The reason ANet nerfs gold making methods is because they want a tight grip in the ingame gold inflation and also to “nerf” the gold making methods that are obviously “OP” compared to the rest.

I’m going to share a super secret with everyone, try and keep this hush hush as I’m not supposed to tell anyone…

Up in a top secret room on a top secret floor in a top secret building in a top secret location, is a special person. He is known simply as “Santa Smith”. You see his very purpose is to monitor every boy and girl and see who was naughty or nice. He is quicker than superman, smarter than Einstein and has 1 simple job. That very moment, milliseconds between when you click buy, and it lags and enters your inventory the request goes straight to Santa Smith, and he decides if you were naught or nice and based on that he messes with your RNG. Now the good boys and girls will know when that rare drops and go “yipee”, while the baddies will get nothing but coal(or a blue). Now you might think this sounds crazy, a single man getting millions of transactions a day, but it’s TRUE! He never tires, he never waivers, he lives purely off snapples and ham sammiches. And those of us who know the secret know just how the story goes….

“When Santa Smith gives a gift, you better hope your good. Cause if your not then your rares will rot in the room where the tinfoil hats are hid. He knows when you are sleeping, he knows when you are rising the price of eggs. So you better be a good gamer, or your loot is going to be lamer, when you anger the great Santa Smith!”

If you doubt this is all try I test you to go to LA, stand next to the bank and meet a man who was good from his first birthday. An NPC who was good as he did grow, and mentions quite frequently “I’m rich, ya know.”

RNG+Santa Smith/RNG-2%+lag/culling*kittens. The answer to it all.

Now be sure to keep this quiet, I could lose my character, my soul, even my rares!…

People were making a lot of money selling the rare dyes. Anything that makes people a ton of money they nerf. Thats how it is in f2p games, sadly.

IMO, this is what ANet calls ‘a sink’.

They have opened up too many faucets and now trying to add sinks all over town to stop the overflow.

After leveling 9 to 80. It just seems like dyes drop more frequently for <70 characters than >70 characters but that is all ‘gut feeling’. Testing that out seems like too much work. I wasn’t leveling them serially either. I would level the low level for a bit usually by doing the daily then switching back to a lv80. This means the drop rates should have been the same for all characters.

IMHO, the only dye chance they’ve “nerfed” is the chance of getting an unidentified one as a normal drop. I used to get one a day, at least, especially in the low-to-mid range of levels. I haven’t had a dye drop in weeks. I would say it was just RNG, but I think it’s with everyone. My guildies have mentioned it as well.

I think it was stated somewhere that either certain drops or all drops had a higher percentage for lower levels. I can’t find it though.
