New Collections System
I searched for threads talking about the new collections system and didn’t seem to find any, so I will start this one. Overall my impressions of the system are positive. It rewards players who do a small scavenger hunt, do a lot of crafting, dungeons, etc. It also encourages people to go out into the world and explore things they might have never done before. There is one of these collection tracks in particular though that I feel is very unbalanced, and disappointing.

For General Reference:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Treasure_Hunter

Perception of Purpose:
It is my perception that the purpose of this achievement is to get players to experience new content by sending them on a scavenger hunt around the world. There are aspects that require getting skill points, jumping puzzles, world merchants, mini-dungeons, world bosses, meta events, fractals, and even a dungeon.

My Initial Response:
Awesome! I get to go on a scavenger hunt. I went out and found a few of the items. I was very excited to have something to do, especially since it gave me a little treasure chest in my home instance. This excitement was short lived however when I got to the list of items that require items gained from world bosses.

These items are not just rare, they are extremely rare. Examples:
- Pendant of Arah
On of the other members of my guild farms Arah, multiple paths a day, every day. He even practices doing the dungeon with a 2 person group because he finds that fun. It is overly conservative and safe to say that he has completed Arah Explorable at least 400 times. I’m sure the number is higher, but that’s a big enough number to make my point. He has never once received this item from the final chest

If that number is not enough proof in itself the rarity of this drop (and therefor the futility of trying) the current price on the market is 1850 gold. That is more expensive than any Precursor weapon, and we all know how rare and wonderful those are.

The Result:
This item is no longer something I could realistically get by actually doing the events, even in a year. I have been playing since beta and have only seen one of these world boss items (and it wasn’t even the correct rarity version for the achievement).

The motivation and excitement I had turned into disappointment. This has now become an achievement for the rich, not the player. While most of these items are obtainable through buying them, there are 3 items in particular that break the cost. The math:
Pendant of Arah – 1850g
Ulgoth’s Tail – 23g
Symbol of the Inquest – 6g
Sam – 225g
All Seeing – 75g
Eternal Ice – 3g
Breath of Kralkatorrik – 15g
Rhendak’s Signet – 79g
Commissar’s Manifesto – 203g

  • Prices rounded down to the nearest gold. Taken from the wiki “Trading Post” description unit, recorded on 29 September, 11:35PM/EST

Total: 2,479g

Suggestion:
Idea 1: Make it into Basic Collection
Part 1: Similar to how the “Dungeoneer” Achievement works. You complete this Rare Collection by doing several basic collections. Have the basic one include all the “Collection items”, “Crafting”, “From Vendors” and even some of the “World Boss Chests”. All the items under 25g is fine. Because their prices are low, it seems like I could possibly get them as a drop by doing the events if do the events.

I understand that this is a “Rare” collection currently for a reason. It gives players who have the gold, something to spend it on. Make the reward for the Basic Collection be the home instance treasure chest and a new item which is a collection item for the Rare Treasure Hunter collection which includes the higher end world boss items.

Idea 2: Make the items you get from the charging the runes, and finding the map pieces do something else. Give average players a reason to play this content.

Reasons why I make these suggestions:
I will be the first to admit, a lot of this is wanting a little treasure chest in my home instance. Who doesn’t?

I also say this because I really enjoyed the idea of collecting map pieces (only found 2 so far), following the map and finding treasure. I liked going out to the different skill points with a rune to charge. I like going down into mini dungeons (I had never been to “Don’t Touch the Shinny” before). I really like scavenger hunts like that. I got the Mad King book in the first Halloween events, I am almost done getting the Mawdrey back piece (Tons of fun finding that stuff from around the world).

You guys at Anet work hard to make this content… but right now I have no reason as an average player to experience finding the rest of my map, getting the last rune of scavenging charged, and going to find all the vendors. Only the super rich who can afford to spend over 2,000 gold on 3 items for an achievement have a reason to play this content.

Funny that the only other expensive ones, other than that pendant, are the two from event chains that are very easy to get bugged.

As far as the prices though, it’s not something that you must do. These are achievements that you get by just playing the game and doing world bosses. If people feel that they need to get all of those collection achievements done right away, then they’re going to have to accept that they will need to either farm them daily and/or buy them from the TP.

The pendant of arah is expensive because it drops from an event chain that not many people do and a dungeon that is beyond the skill level of the majority of the player base. So of course it’s going to be pretty expensive if you were to purchase it off the TP.

I agree that the TP elements of this achievement are insane. They need to remove another you can buy off the TP from the requirements of the achievement, or increase their drop rates exponentially.

If that’s the case then maybe after the bugs are fixed, the prices for those will go down and they won’t be too bad to get. Aside from the bugs though, now that you mention those two items, I notice that those are also the only two events not on a timer of some kind like the rest of the world bosses. That could also play a part in the prices / ability to get it yourself since it’s hard to get people to do that event when they don’t know when it is.

I don’t know how realistic it is to suggest changing meta events (to put them on a time schedule of some kind) for the purpose of an achievement though.

Maybe just one of those two items could stay in the collection, get rid of the Pendant of Arah, and at least you could spend 300 gold (the cost of a commander tag) to do the achievement. That might be doable. Lots of dungeon runs, but at least possible again for the average player.

Increasing the drop rate of some of these items so that players could find it themselves… brilliant. Way more simple than my ideas. I like ideas that promote playing the game better than ones that promote just farming gold (even if the idea is ‘farm less gold’).

The problem is that the barriers should not be based on gold, and they should not be based on RNG. Everything on there should be things that YOU have to do, no one else, but things that you only have to do ONCE, or a fixed number of times, not “maybe once, maybe a thousand times, depends.” Everything should either be somethign that drops every single time you complete a certain activity (or at least always drops the first time and only rarely after that), or something where you always get at least one “token” and you have to trade in maybe ten or fewer of them to get the item you need.

You should be able to work diligently towards your goal, not keep pulling the slot machine and hoping for 7’s.

While I would personally love such a system to be in place, I suspect the reason ANet has done things the way they have is because, quite frankly, if things became a lot easier for players to obtain, player retention would go way down. We saw this once already when Ascended gear was first introduced. ANet had made Exotics to be the top tier of gear, but players got them in a matter of weeks (days?) instead of the months they were expecting. And then, once they’d gotten the “best gear”, the players started to get bored and leave. Thus, enter Ascended gear and their incredibly onerous costs.

So yeah, while I’d love for the game to provide me with what I need within a reasonable timeframe, ANet can count on me to be here for the long haul since I’m a “perfectionist” player who likes doing just about everything available in a game. It appears that the majority of players are not, however; they just come in, grind their goal as fast as possible (whether it’s getting top tier gear, completing content, or something else), and then leave again. They aren’t sticking around to explore the other parts of the game.

ANet’s been doing their best to try to encourage people to do all kinds of different content (and I do think that it’s working, with stuff like the Collections and scavenger hunts like Mawdrey), but in the meantime they still need to keep the players playing as long as possible until they take the bait. They just have to balance it carefully so that the grind doesn’t get to the point where it’s more frustration than fun.

For what it’s worth, OP, the final reward for Treasure Hunter doesn’t appear to be worth it. Go for the Collection as a long-term goal, but don’t go too crazy trying to get it. The Karmic Converter reward for the Exotic weapon collection seems much more useful, and a lot more easily completed.

this has nothing to do with making things easier. Right now they are as easy as it gets, you can just hit “o” run a search, and buy them. How could they possibly make it easier? This is about making them if anything harder, because you’d actually have to go out into the world and find them yourself. The challenge should be in actually accomplishing the task, not in accomplishing a relatively easy task dozens and dozens of times until you’re lucky enough for the desired reward to pop.

Ohoni is entirely right. This should not be about grinding the event to get that 1 in a million drop, nor should it be about grinding for gold to buy an overpriced item that you don’t intend to use from the TP.

It should be an item that you can reasonably get for doing a quest/event chain, but it should be a reward for doing it! Not a 1 in a million reward, just an award, so that if you complete the event, you get the item.

One thing I’d like to see is that they also drop blue ones. Maybe MF four blue ones and be guaranteed an orange one. I’d even be fine with them going full kitten on it, and making it so that you need to combine four blues for a guaranteed green, four greens for a guaranteed yellow, and four yellows for a guaranteed orange. At least then you’d know you only needed to collect 64 blues, which is still better than needing to get one orange through RNG.

I hate this collection with a passion and it drives me crazy that I cannot complete it. At first i had fun with it, going to places, getting items that I didn’t pay attention to before. Even the enchanted Key was fun. Then I had to deal with the bugged event chains that unlock merchants, but got even those done after several tries.

And then, after passing the second tier of the achievement, I got stuck. I refuse to pay for the world bosses drops. Yet they never drop when I do the world bosses. The rune of scavenging is stupidly expensive and totally unnecessary. On top of that I have done Arah probably as much as OP’s guildy, and I have never seen that kitten item drop.

So good luck to whoever decides to go for that achievement. I’d rather buy me another legendary with that gold.

They just need to add a way to upgrade the blue(fine) versions to the exotics. Either go do these X steps/events/whatevers or go find/craft these X items and combine it in the mystic toilet. In both cases it shouldn’t be too easy of things to do or find, but neither should it completely rely on the horrible RNG system.
As it is the blue items don’t drop that often and they have absolutely no use (it being a lvl 80 item and only one state).

Everything that’s wrong with the reward system in this game in one sentence.

I don’t think that is entirely fair. The Mawdrey was an excellent example of how the scavenger system could work. You had to earn the Geodes, you had to run around and collect everything, you had to craft. The only thing that was even a little painful was the foxfire clusters, but in the end it is an Ascended back item which puts the cost of the foxfire reasonable if you have to buy some of it. The rest was not hard to get on my own.

They are doing something new with these collections, they aren’t going to get them all 100% correct the first round. The best thing I think we can all do is give our feedback on the ones that don’t work and encourage change.

This is the only game I’ve found where you can get the best equipment in the game by doing high end dungeons (fractals), world bosses (got an ascended staff from Teq once), crafting, or any combination of them. Exotics have even more ways to get the level 80 pieces, and the stat difference isn’t huge. They have made improvements to the reward system for world bosses that you always get a rare, and the dungeon bonus chests.

The reward system as a whole isn’t that bad. Most of the super grind stuff is all looks. I’m perfectly fine with the other rare collections being gold sinks. I was only disappointed in this system because making it so high end killed the new content (Enchanted Key, rune hunt, etc).

I really liked the idea of being able to somehow upgrade the lesser versions. That would give the lucky or the rich the fast track to the achievement and items, where having to take more steps to upgrade will just add to the scavenger hunt.

Are we sure that the Pendant of Arah drops from Arah? Arah is run by tons of people every day. None of the other collection drops are dungeon exclusive. Maybe it drops in the world or the living story.

As for the others, they have temporary inflated prices that will fall over time, but it would be nice if the Ogre and dredge bosses were put on the world boss timer.

Why? What makes you think it’s meant as something that needs to be done immediately rather than over the long term as you do champ farms? The impatient people that must do everything right away will be the ones that pay the higher costs off the TP. The AP you get is very small and the rewards are not worth the effort.

The prices for Sam and the Commissar item will go down over time. It’d go down quicker if they actually fixed the event chains so that they don’t bug so easily and stall. It’d still take more time regardless as those events are not on a set schedule and most players prefer to go to an event, AFK, and then semi-AFK auto attacking when the boss spawns rather than do an event chain that spawns the boss.

The same thing goes with the arah pendant. If more people actually did the event chain, and/or did Arah, the price of the pendant would go down for those that do not want to do either of those can just buy it directly.

And sure the TP is there for the ones that have to have it now, but for the rest of us that can wait (a reasonable amount of time), it also shouldn’t take years of doing the event and hoping RNG doesn’t screw you over each time you do the event(s).

I only have 2 complaints about the treasure hunter collection, 1) The items from world bosses are rare AND Magic Find doesn’t help with drops AT ALL, and 2) 2 of the required items come from event chains that are bugged about 99% of the time.

If the items from world bosses were more common, or Magic Find helped make them more common Id have literally 0 issue with the first one since playing the game would make your chances of getting them easier and it wouldn’t be you just grinding the same boss into oblivion trying to get one super rare drop. Imo the best solution would be to make them drop an item 100% of the time (well, no less than 50%), that you then go on a mini scavenger hunt to “upgrade” it into the real item needed.

The second point i feel is obvious, fix the bugged events that have been bugged FOREVER, I have never once been able to do the meta in dredge haunt cause it’s always bugged and I’ve been here since head start, the Ogre one isn’t AS bad, but it’s pretty close!

PS: I’ve onky cleared Arah Explo like 6 times and I’ve gotten the pendant, it probably is because when I do dungeons I exterminate every NPC in the kitten thing Vanquishing style, where the speed runners put all their eggs in one basket.

Pendant of Arah, maybe. But Sam, ulgoths tail, Rhendaks ring have always been there iirc (I know Sam was before the patch at least, had seen it on tp while looking for exotic accessories for 200ish before the patch, and had to look it up on wiki to see what could make it cost so much).

Those two are only expensive because of the easily bugged event chains and that they’re not part of the scheduled boss rotations. They did gather a lot of people when they used the timer apps but mega servers killed that.

I find it disappointing that the Ogre Wars chain hasn’t been fixed for the longest time and there’s even documentation in the wiki about how it bugs. What more is needed? The actual code fixes?

I believe this item didn’t exist prior to September 9th. The first data point on that tracker is from the 12th and in the year and a half I’ve played this game and searched over and over again for zerker trinkets, I’ve never seen this on the TP before.

@OP – because I believe this is actually a new item, give it more time for people to farm Arah explorable. They will, and costs will drop over time. They’ll probably level out at 200g, so your point still stands, but it’s possible!

I do hate that this collection is so grindy (and buggy). It would be nice if this was more like a component hunt like Mawdrey was. But let’s be honest, the only reason that took any time was because it was time-gated and everyone seems to hate those kinds of things too.

they should balance rarity based on participation. They know how often each event was farmed pre-patch, the ones that were farmed more should have lower rarity. For example, if 60% of players did a given activity once per week, while only 10% of players did another activity once per week, then the needed reward from the latter should be six times ad common a drop as the one from the former.

@OP – because I believe this is actually a new item, give it more time for people to farm Arah explorable. They will, and costs will drop over time. They’ll probably level out at 200g, so your point still stands, but it’s possible!

they should balance rarity based on participation. They know how often each event was farmed pre-patch, the ones that were farmed more should have lower rarity. For example, if 60% of players did a given activity once per week, while only 10% of players did another activity once per week, then the needed reward from the latter should be six times ad common a drop as the one from the former.

No.

Yeah these new collections are lame. This whole game is based on RNG, or grabbing the credit card for gems to gold conversion. I guess this is how they stay in business, though I wonder how many leave over frustration.

Just wanted to say thank you to the OP! This achievement is what I’m working on right now and all I need to complete it are these items: Pendant of Arah, Sam, Commissar’s Manifesto, and Rhendak’s Signet.

Although I will keep farming Rhendak’s, the other ones I’ve given up on getting due to bugs and the fact the Pendant of Arah is almost like a myth in the game. I was severely disappointed when I learned about the Pendant of Arah and was actually so angry I gave up on the achievement for awhile. One can hope…

I’m with the OP: when the collections first came out I was excited. Now I just don’t care. The collections are either ridiculously rare, have stupidly low rewards, or both.

it’s this luck based mystic toilet that we’re all so sick of flushing our money down. -Salamol

Not particularly concerned about the achievement. The chances of getting anything good from that chest isn’t going to be any better than getting one of these as drops.

well the highest buy offer is only 700 gold. Quite hoenstly just wait a few month, price will drop.

I spent like 700 gold on exotic hunter too. Still missing crustacea.

No offense but I’m tired of waiting months… or spending hundreds of gold for what amounts to skins or 2 blues and a green. To each his own I guess.

Only 700 gold? O.o

Well let me snap that little bargain right up. Or should I wait till it drops down to 500 gold….

Decisions decisions.

well the Op says 1850 gold… I’m trying to cheer her up =)

Quite honestly I dont’ know what price it’ll be in a few month. Depend how many people are willing to fill buy order at a high price.

Judging by the buy orders not many people are willing to pay that much for it.

Exactly. I’m patiently waiting for the prices of some of the other Exotics to fall. Tons and tons of players do the other world bosses every day; stuff like Eternal Ice and Breath of Kralkatorrik are bound to fall back to their pre-patch levels, particularly since Ascended trinkets exist and are relatively easy to get. It’s likely that the only people buying these will be people who are after the Collection.

Rhendak’s Signet prices are falling as people have learned simply to park alts at him and farm him multiple times a day. Sam and Commissar’s Manifesto prices are staying high for the moment as their events are frequently bugged, but hopefully ANet will fix these soon and supply will start flowing again.

Good luck with that wish. Like the person said above, the ogre one has been getting bugged forever and even with people documenting possible ways to bug the event Anet still hasn’t fixed it.
It may be a complicated problem, but why the kitten require a reward for constantly bugged event in the collection?

They didn’t fix it when they made it an event for a trait unlock.
They didn’t fix it when they added the collection.

I wonder how many things will have to be added to these broken event chains to be considered important enough for a fix.

Another update with event bug fixes yet these two events were ignored again.

Same with actually unlocking at least 3 collections (champ bags, beer, and wine).

commissar event isn’t actually bugged, you just need to back track from east-west a few times.. it involves slightly more coordination than clearing upper hirathi.. it’s sad that these collections had their potential blown by poor decision making.. they’re just a gold sink sham trying to promote older content (which is fine by the way, but you don’t do it by waving a carrot in front of the face of your seasoned players).. and sorry, but i’m not going to subjugate myself on flat out horrible content like arah.. there’s a reason it is a stale (path selling) portion of lfg.. and sorry to say but the price on this item isn’t going to stabalize until after the market players get their investment worth or arena net intervenes
