Q:

I am really excited about the long overdue precursor collections and crafting. I know that Linsey said that the icons in the collections tab were placeholders so that led me to wonder if that means there will be new content to go play in the base game.

This system has been in demand and talked about by players and dev. staff for 2 years or maybe more. If it was added like 6 months to a year into the game’s life cycle a simple collection of items + completion of existing content would have been fine. The fact that it’s coming after years of delays and frustration and silence on the topic has me hoping that a lot of game play has been added to the core game. If it’s just a simple collection(albeit time consuming) then why the extended delays? Couldn’t this have been implemented when collections were added as a feature to the game if that were the case?

I will be sorely disappointed if this were held back for the x-pac to get more people to buy the x-pac because you have to own it to even have access to the collection. This was something that ArenaNet had been talking about when some employees were quoted as saying they had no intention of ever doing an x-pac.

So what do you guys think? Are we getting new content to do or is this just going to be doing the same stuff we’ve been doing for 2+ years?

It’s my understanding that collections were added to test-run this exact thing.

The blog post suggests that there will be new content involved in the process. It will probably not be as much as you want.

There may be new items to collect towards pre’s, but the main reason to use placeholders in a published image is to prevent early market price gouging on the items needed for the collection.

Also the real items needed may not be completely finalized yet.

I don’t think there will be that much, if any, new content added to Pact Tyria. One of the purposes of the Collections will be to spread the population out and about to all the zones that are somewhat neglected as end-game content.

Most new content will be found in the expansion areas, I’m guessing. Though, visiting a Pact Tyria area, and interacting differently with something might be more common.

I guess we will find out exactly what is involved once HoT releases. =)

I doubt anet will be adding new content to the base game alongside an expansion. The most you can hope for is a few balance changes/qol improvements like no condi cap.

ANet has already outlined the changes they will be making to the game and already discussed why precursor scavenger hunting took so long to implement.

  • We are getting new content, but not that many new zones to start off.
  • There was mention of instanced and group challenges, but the words ‘dungeon,’ ‘raid,’ and ‘fractal’ were avoided.
  • There was mention that some new content will be tied to the expac and some won’t.
  • The reason a new route to legendaries took so long to implement is that it has huge implications to the economy and existing owners of ‘prestige’ items. They were deliberative in rolling out a new system that would support scavenger hunts more easily, to test that with simple collections, and then later tiered collections. Some of the simple collections bugged out the gate (brewmeister, wine), while the more recent additions work well (lumi armor) — all in all, I think it’s great that we didn’t get it all at once.

That said, I think some people will be very disappointed by the expac — not because it lacks in features, but because it lacks in changes to the game those folks have been hoping or agitating for. (Pretty much the way I view version upgrades to iTunes or MS Word: always lots of new, robust, powerful features, but never the ones I wanted and always in a way that makes it harder to do what I enjoyed in the past.)

I’m looking forward to the expac; I think it will be a lot of fun.
