Before I get into this little rant about some of the community of GW2, let me first say i sympathize with you. Anet did say that there wasn’t going to be a gear grind, I understand this. But before you get incredibly angry, as many have, please consider the following.

1. The game was released, people go to 80 and complained “lack of things to do”. Despite there being an entire world with 10+ dynamic events in everyone, people claim it is unrewarding. Say they want better rewards or gear from doing them, but wouldn’t that consider it a gear grind?

2. This is a MMO, gear grind is just about the only way to do it. If you have a suggestion please tell them, I would be very interested to hear this also. But the “gear grind” is what keeps players attached. GW1, although fun, did not have a huge player base. That playerbase was not always active either. Many players bought the game, got to 80 and got bored. The new expansions would bring players back, but the playerbase would eventually dwindle back down. I have close to 100 players in my guild, about 3 weeks ago I would always have 10+ people on, now id be lucky to have close to 10 on at once. Why? Despite there being all this stuff to do, no one wants to do it because there are no gear rewards. They don’t want it to be a gear grind, yet they do. Putting in a gear grind would keep more players attached and more playing for longer periods of time.

3. sPvP is not a gear grind, yet a very small amount (compared to the full playerbase) players it a lot.

I have talked to a lot of players, many say that this is their first MMO and it is showing. This game brings a lot of new things to the table, but they also need to keep players attached to the game so they can release and make future content. When I played GW1 the small playerbase mostly did PvP and endgame dungeons and what not. They didn’t have to, but it was fun and it was how it kept players attached. But again there weren’t too many players compared to when the game was in its hay day.

Just keep that in mind, people say they don’t want a gear grind yet they never play the game. I often find the people in my guild who i still talked to that “have taken a break from the game” complain about things and then request other things that seem to contradict one another.

Just my observation, what do you guys think? What is your opinion on this whole drama flame war brought on about ascended gear and the way endgame handles gear progression?

Also this is not a flame war, keep it clean.

There has to be some type of grind I agree, there has to be something that keeps the game alive, without that, it’s exactly like you said, people leave. Also I think people are overreacted way to much over this. It really isn’t that big of a deal.

A bunch of gear grinders bought a game advertised as not having a gear grind and then left? How is this an argument for a gear grind?

This is not my first MMO, my 50e says hi. Making gear that you spent months obtaining subpar is not a benefit, it’s exploitive and an insult to the very concept of a reward for such an effort.

But here’s a thought, merge all of the threads started that are for a gear grind. We’ll see how big that topic gets and measure the overall tone of it.

This industry just needs to move on. We’ve seen a bunch of “WoW 2.0” attempts, and
who actually wants that? Do we really want to be playing those same game mechanics for
another 5 or 10 years? -Mike O’Brien

I think if the game didn’t have something really special going for it, then people wouldn’t have such a fierce reaction to this change.

Now I’ve played quite a few mmorpgs from newb to endgame, and there’s always growing pains and yes over reactions, but this is the biggest flip flop I’ve ever experienced in 15 years of gaming. (except for maybe when they ganked Lord British, but I digress)

What I feel when I sit down to play is that old sinking feeling that tells me the worm has turned.
What I mean to say is it’s the death by inches, and me and a few others see that first inch and would rather break up now rather than a year from now when we have a house and a kid together.

Their should be a skins and mats grind. And, more horizontal progression to support it.
