Hello friends, I am a new player and joined today. I am wondering can someone help me on this game? I want to make an easy character. I do not even understand how to find my quests in the game. Is there a guide for noobs like myself? I’d greatly appreciate it..

Welcome to GW2.

Classes are a matter of preference. Can you give an example from another MMO? When you say “easy”, if you mean straight-forward game play and good survivability, I would suggest warrior, revanent, necro or ranger.

Regarding quests, the game was made to avoid the traditional quests that other MMO’s have. The only classic quests are the story quests (e.g. Personal story, HoT story, Living world story). Other quests are heart quests… marked by a hollow yellow heart. You don’t need to talk to an NPC to get the quest, they automatically activate when you enter it quest area. Heart quests weren’t even supposed to be in the game… Anet use them as a way to attract players to areas where dynamic events happen.

I would recommend you start with a guardian (main hand scepter for range) or go ranger. Once you get to elite specs at max level, your guardian can wield a bow and your ranger becomes a druid with a staff. Both are easier classes with good survivablilty.

To explain the “quests” more, your Personal Story now come in chapter lumps at ten-level intervals so you won’t actually go to the step right after your starter instance until you reach level 10. While it’s active you’ll have a green star on your map to show you where to go — be cautious when it tell you to go through portals, it’s likely taking you the long way around. If you look in the eventual destination map you’ll see the actual location you want and can plan your own route there.

Otherwise just wander the world, explore, do any orange-circle events you see (instructions to complete them will be in your UI upper right), gather all the plants, wood, and metal you can, and stick your nose in any cave, climb any cliff you can, you might find hidden things.

Don’t worry about exact stats on your gear, or even about getting the highest gear you can. When I’m leveling an alt I generally toss on new gear from the Trading Post every ten levels or so and that’s overkill. Stat builds and focused gear choices are more a concern at 80 than at any point getting there.

Also don’t worry about rushing to 80, you’ll miss a lot on the way. Take your time to get to know the maps.

Well another aspect of GW2 is the loss of the hard MMO trinity. All professions have melee and range abilities. All can heal to some degree, at least themselves. Tanking is non-existent, from the PoV of face tanking with a healer or two. The “caster” classes in this game are Elementalist, Mesmer and Necromancer. While there is an elite specialization to Range that’s called a Druid, I don’t know WoW at all to make a comparison.

I assume you and your friend poked around our game’s wiki.

Two major differences between other MMOs and here, first every zone has viable activities for max level characters, so no zone is simply level through and never return. If you rush to the end you miss out on a lot of viable, rewarding content.

And second is learning to dodge attacks. This game has a semi-active combat system (no blocks and counters like BnS) as most skills don’t root you and your armor and HP aren’t enough simply to hold your ground and face tank. You survive by avoiding the damage.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

The ‘Game’ link above gives a very broad overview of the game; you may find it helpful.

There’s a popular, albeit somewhat outdated, Sticky over in the Players Helping Players sub-forum you might consider perusing.

And, of course, as mentioned above the Wiki (link above) may provide answers to many of your questions/concerns.

Welcome to Tyria, and good luck!

Almost everyone feel lost when first enter this game.
Follow the above link and just give yourself some time and you will find it awesome.
Another thing you can do to test yourself in classes , is to just create a character, end the first instance(about 5 mins max) and then just hit the 2ble swrd icon on your screen(upper left).
You will go to pvp area where all characters are insta 80 and have some golems to hit and try classes or better play some pvp games to check them out.
I think the class you re looking for is the elementalist and is a very strong class atm.

Good luck

Is it luck or skill keeping you alive?

I want to make an easy character.

I am sorry to report that;

  1. There are no easy characters in GW2
  2. If you do any PvP or WvWroaming, you have to learn every class

@onevstheworld.2439 I currently play World of Warcraft and subscribed to it. My main is a resto druid and mostly I play caster classes. I’m terrible at mele classes..

I would say that with your preferences maybe try staff elementalist.

As an aside, I would suggest that even though you are new, you might like WvW (press B and join (probably) Eternal Battlegrounds map). Join your server’s community teamspeak by asking in /team or /map for details. Play on Friday at 7pm GMT and you should have lots of friendly, helpful people to talk with.

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

Ho, traveler and welcome to Tyria!

Think this reddit post covers about everything you must know. Most important thing: Don’t rush, enjoy the game, getting to max level is pretty easy and should not be your only goal. Make sopme friends, take a lot of screenshots and feel free to PM here or in game for help https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3iygvj/guide_to_new_players_free_to_play/

There is a players helping players forum here so you probably want to explore that. You can also join a guild and ask questions there (map chat is hit or miss). As to the initial question though, I also would suggest ranger (you get a pet to watch your back) and sticking to PVE in core Tyria until you are used to the game. If you are on the north american servers feel free to friend me (Valtava Soturi among other names) and ask questions.

Necromancer is a good starter caster. Get yourself a staff, axe and warhorn. The rest should come pretty easy.

Tanking is non-existent, from the PoV of face tanking with a healer or two.

This is not true anymore after the release of raids.

Raids are designed to be done with 1 tank, 1 healer and 8 DPSers. Healers are potional but recommended. Tanks are mandatory, you can’t beat the raids without one.

Tanking is usually done by necromancers but in theory any class can do it, you just need to make sure you as a tank have 400 more toughness than the rest of your party to reliably keep aggro.

Healing is usually done by druids (rangers) but tempest (elementalist) is also a popular healer choice.

The weapons you equip determine whether you are melee or ranged, and all classes have both options.

In other games I tend to prefer ranged classes but Guardian is a good starting class. My first was Ranger and that was a lot of fun too, especially trying to find combat pets in the different zones.

Elementalist is a great ranged class too with lots of AoE attacks. Pretty versatile in that you can quickly switch from attack to healing attunements.

Good luck and welcome to GW2.

Some classes do melee and/or ranged better than others since they all have different weapon skills. Both warrior and ranger have greatsword and longbow (my fave weapon combo) so that is another reason why they are both great starter options. I lean towards ranger though because you also get a pet to watch your back. Starting out you will only have one weapon at a time but eventually you will be able to quickly swap between two.

But raid tank isn’t a traditional HP sponge but someone who can hold the aggro and can drag the boss to various spots according to the mechanic.

The good news is that, unlike WoW, the weapon you choose actually matters beyond the stats it provides! In GW2, each weapon presents the player with a set of unique skills. For example, a thief with a staff is all melee, but that same thief can swap to pistols or shortbow mid-combat to access ranged attacks! All classes can do this in GW2.

You also don’t see the “holy trinity” of tank/heals/dps here. All classes have self-healing capability as well as at least some group healing abilities. All classes can be more offensive or defensive depending upon trait and gear choices. Having said that, some classes are better at one function or another.

If you were interested in a good class for a new player (read: forgiving), ranger is generally recommended. Pets are good for distracting enemies, giving players new to action combat a little more time and room to breathe. Additionally, since you liked resto druid in WoW, the closest thing to a dedicated healer in GW2 is the ranger elite specialization, druid.
