Figured I might as well make a post on my way out in the vain hope I’ll be heard.

I am a new player. Or at least I WAS a new player. Having bought GW2 on sale and on a whim, I was honestly surprised to find myself so engaged in a way that I haven’t been in a long, long time with an MMO. The lack of traditional quest hubs, the fluid combat, the colorful environment, the seeming focus on “doing it your way” and finding your own fun without feeling railroaded… it was love at first sight.

Stumbling into Bandithaunt Caverns several levels too early and getting my butt kicked, confusedly completing my first skill challenge, teaming up with a bunch of random people to complete an event before I even knew what an event was, running around Caledon Forest with a spikefruit simply because I could, all these are fond memories from my first week playing GW2. I was ready to buckle in for the long haul. I’d even spent about 20 bucks on gems, and was ready to spend more.

Sadly, these new features designed to draw in and retain new players have driven this new player away. Before this update, GW2 gave me something few other MMOs on the market could: a sense of freedom.

Players new to an MMO, any MMO, are often wide-eyed and confused and make frequent mistakes, yes, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s called learning! And it opens the door to wonder, excitement and (the most important part of any MMO) fun.

Having my hand held as I’m lead around by the nose isn’t fun. Having content gated by level isn’t fun. The GW2 starting experience simply isn’t as fun as it was when I first started playing, and it’s killed my desire to level at all.

GW2 isn’t fun for me anymore. And if a game isn’t fun, why go on playing it?

Same here. I’ve been playing GW2 for two years, but I’ve been playing very “on and off” over the last year, in part because of the direction Arenanet has been taking the game.
