New Player - Seeking advice
Hi and welcome to the game. There is no trinity in GW2 so there are not really any full time healing or tanking roles.
That aside, while you are downloading you might find this thread on tips for new players helpful:

melee & support prolly guard. Yes, dedicated healers are not desired, and then dps is pretty much king in pve anyway. Second choice (or first for some) for melee & support is maybe banner warrior. Warrior is easiest to level for the most part. I think water ele is probably the most versatile healer/dps class, but only desired in certain circumstances and not really a melee class.

Thanks Trogdor! I will definitely read up!

Guardian looks pretty cool maybe I’ll go mace/longsword guardian it looks like an AoE type of damage

imo best aoe for guard, at least at cap, is staff. At least every guard farmer has one on tap. It also provides shared movement speed, so good to have one around in any case. I primarily GS my guard, greatsword looks cool and is effective, then various weapons for swap. Quite a few really good builds for guard, experiment once you hit cap, which wont take long.
Race is personal pref, but imo charr are the coolest looking guards and have warband and charzooka racial skills. https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/List_of_charr_racial_skills
Guards lack a good range atm (though they get longbow at HoT release) but the charzooka skill helps out quite a bit at certain times (e.g. that spider boss room in the AC dungeon).

Worst downside of charr: hard-mode for doing jump puzzles. But no requirement to do them, and you do get use to the bulky odd character well enough to do them after time.
