Hi!

So I played GW2 when it first came out for awhile but then quit. I’m looking to come back and I am wondering… should I pick up HoT? If I don’t, will I miss out on a lot? I see there’s the Revenant profession and some profession specializations…

I’m guessing they’re both only included when you purchase HoT but are they only available after max level in the original GW2? Or does Revenant start at lvl 1 like the other professions?

I’m mainly interested in solo queueing PVP and WPVP.

I just don’t want to pick up HoT and end up not playing very much so I’d like to see how committed I am first. But from what I remember for solo PVP or queueing you are bumped to max level and are able to spec at max level… will the class specializations provided in HoT be available as well even if I don’t have HoT? If not, will I be at a huge disadvantage then?

Until you hit level 80, the only thing you’re missing in PvE and WvW is access to Revenant. The rest of it is level 80+ stuff.

Now in PvP, you get the elite specs unlocked if you own HoT, and only if you own it. And yes, some will say that not having the elite specs IS a downside, and that they’re still stronger in PvP than the base classes. If winning in PvP matters a lot to you, you’ll want HoT.

Otherwise, I’d say to take your time, and find it on sale somewhere. Don’t pay full price for it before you need it. Rev alone isn’t worth it.

What Palador said is correct.

If your focus is heavily on PvP and winning, then buying HoT is basically mandatory. All Elite specs are much more viable than the normal core classes. In my experience, buying HoT was the best decision I made for PvP.

Like Palador said though, for PvE and WvW you might as well try and hit 80 first and then decide if you want to buy it.

As a veteran player, I bought HoT and am semi-pleased. What I am not pleased about is all the in-game content that was going to be released and still has not come out. Every company is doing this approach and very frustrating.
Therefore, as a new player, I will tell you not to purchase HoT until all of the promised content comes out with it. You’ll be missing a part of the game yes, but as of right now I would not recommend.

Heart of Thorns is a rip for some of us. I paid $60 for the game back when it was buy-to-play, now new players can come in w/o paying, buy Heart of Thorns, and get stuff I can’t even though I’ve already paid. Why on earth would ArenaNet do that to people who’ve already bought the game? Shouldn’t we get HoT (at least the $50 version)? I feel like I’ve been cheated. Again.

You say that you played GW2 when it first came out and then quit, but you don’t say why. Without knowing what made you unhappy enough to quit in the first place, it’s hard to say whether or not purchasing HoT would be worth it.

Do the features of HoT in any way address the issues that made you quit in the first place? If so, then maybe it is a worthy purchase for you.

If not, then…probably not worth the purchase.

For me, it is not worth it.

It’s an expensive expansion with little actual content, and what content there is is mostly raids, pvp, and content geared toward hard-core players that asked for more difficult content.

It also includes a new profession, but does not include a character slot, so in addition to already spending at least fifty bucks, you will then have to turn around and spend another ten bucks on a character slot if you do not have an unused one available (or delete an existing character). No thank you.

That’s the single biggest reason for my decision not to purchase HoT. I am not going to encourage this kind of “Let’s squeeze our players for every last dollar” approach to game development. I feel that if they are not willing to provide a suitable amount of content I am interested in at a fair price — without extra “hidden” fees like the need to purchase a character slot to access content you have ALREADY PAID FOR! — then they are simply not interested in my money; and I am not interested in in giving it to them.

Add this to their dismal record of communication with their players and I am in an indefinite holding pattern. If I see improvement in their attitudes towards their customers, then I would love to be an ANet supporter again. Until I see that happening, however, my wallet remains closed.

Obviously, it depends on what you are looking for and why you stopped playing.

As for PvE, you need max level for most of the content.
As for PvP, the elite specializations are a huge factor.

As for whether or not you want to support Anet, it’s a personal choice. I feel like I got my money’s worth, but others feel like they did not.

One thing HoT gets you is the vertical dimension. I don’t believe any other MMO has done it as well. All MMOs give you the 2D experience — running a basically flat map. But in HoT you have to deal with massive differences in height — which is why gliding is required. There are many places you can’t get to until you travel to a high point and then glide across the map to the point you need to reach. I personally think this is a MMO breakthrough.

I can tell you why I stopped playing originally: The camera system. I hate the camera system. I came back when I heard that they had finally integrated the old Combat Mode mod into the game as “Action Camera” and I have been loving it. I have already nearly doubled the level I left of on my old elementalist with my new thief. I found Thief unplayable before due to the moves that displace you and in the process kitten up the camera positioning, which without Action Camera was enough of a pain in the butt to fix that it got me killed all the time.

I must say I don’t feel ripped off because the core went free to play, because I got a 4 1/2 year head start when I bought and I original got the middle package (I think it was $79.99) because I wanted the extra items but didn’t need the artwork version.

HoT in its current state is somewhat disappointing because of the issues with lost connection during Metas and having to use Looking for Group instead of getting a popup asking if you wanted to participate in the Meta and being added to the server that was filling.

I bought the $100.00 version because it was the same as buying the game for base price and buying 800 gems. The jury is still out as far as it being worth the cost, I want to see what the April updates offer.

So in my opinion for $50.00 I will say yes it is a average deal, not great and not bad. After the release it may turn out to be awesome or it may be another disaster. Sorry for the flip flop style answer but to be honest there are so many unanswered questions regarding the path its hard to be 100% sure for or against.

The f2p game is not the same as the one that you paid $60 for. New players that start f2p also buy HOT to get a lot of the conveniences that you already enjoy as a paid player; more bag/character slots; no messaging/mail restrictions; full access to the trading post and quite a few other restrictions lifted that probably have more of an impact on the feel of the game then the new things in HOT.

All of that not even considering all the time that you spent playing before the f2p was even an option. Did you feel the same way when the core game went on sale for $10 after the game was out for 2 years? Break it down, type /age, divide your investment by hours played and tell me how else can you entertain yourself for that little investment?

As to the OP, you still have the core game, so hop in and play it. If you find you’re having a tough time against elite specs in pvp and want to become one of them then jump on HOT.

I would have to say yes just because the Elite specs are WAY better than normal specs (probably to get people to buy HoT like they nerfed dungeon rewards and pushed people to fractals and raids and even fractal rewards are low until you get the Fractal Mastery which is HoT content)

But as a value standpoint, I don’t think it’s worth it. (My personal opinion feels like its just DLC and I still don’t know what comes with HoT and what they are going to wait on til the next xpac)

CoH had Super Jumping, full-on Flight, and mid-air combat. HoT does well enough for non-combat gliding, but… yeah. Hardly a breakthrough.

Still, I’d have to say that gliding IS one of the best parts of HoT, especially out in the main world. It’s just a pity that you have to gain and level it in the HoT zones.

Not only would I not buy it, if I could, I would give it back. It’s not that it was a waste of money. If that were the case, I would simply chalk it off to a bad use of dollars. No, they damaged the base game severely once one installed HoT.

I should temper that a bit. Some of the damage they did was not part of HoT. It was preparatory to HoT. So, you’re stuck with those damaged parts of the game regardless of whether you buy HoT or not.

So those 60$ you spent over 3 years ago were a bad investment I guess. Make sure to check your time spent ingame and do an exact cost analysis of how much dollers per hour you wasted. Then once you are done with that, go feel ashamed.

The outrage that came with HoT was justified. Arenanet caved and offered vets some benefits. This was over 1/2 a year ago. Get over it and move on. If you did not get your moneys worth, fine. My guess is you are just to stubborn out of principal at this point since the actual economic drain of HoT is minimal. Unless you are not interested in the expansion, but then don’t pretend and come up with bs arguments.

Wow, such venom has been directed at me. I don’t like something you do, so you get mad at me and talk to me like I’m an unruly 6-year-old and you’re my parent. Well, I am not a child, and you’re not my parent. I can see right now posting things on the forums and expecting intelligent disagreement is expecting too much. Instead, every spoiled brat has something infantile to say.

Look, I don’t like how ArenaNet handled this, and I never will. Grow up and accept that.

To those of you who replied to this (pro or con) and did so with decency and respect: THANK YOU. I never expected everyone to agree with my statement. But wow I didn’t know I was going to get cyberbullied.

Oh, well. I guess I won’t be on the forums again. It was a mistake to express an honest opinion here, apparently.

Look, whether you like the way Anet handled this or not, doesn’t make your response to what Anet did a reasonable one.

Almost every game goes down in price over the years. People who played SWToR and Wildstar and ESO for example, paid a sub for a long time before the game went free to play. All those people spent over $100 over the price of the game, to play a game that everyone else was now going to get for free. Worst still many games offer “optional” subs that aren’t really optional anyway, while claiming to be free to play.

Both WoW and EQ don’t actually make you buy every expansion. It’s bad for business. Like it or not, Anet has to compete with other MMOs.

Over time, every MMO suffers natural attrition. People stop playing. They run out of things to do, or their friends stop playing or they play games less altogether, but eventually the playerbase is going to go down. Unless you replace players lost by natural attrition, you end up with a shrinking player base. This is terrible for people who bought the game at launch.

And I don’t know many games that stay the same price over three years anyway. The core game has already been on sale for $10 three times. So what we’re really arguing about here is $10.

Anet doesn’t have a pay to win cash shop, and it doesn’t charge a monthly fee. So it sells an expansion at a higher price than most people think is worth it. That’s fine.

But making it so people don’t have to buy two products, which means making sure more people enter the game? That’s good for everyone, even veteran players.

If no other company were doing something like this, you’d have a point. But the thing is, the two most popular MMOs next to Guild Wars 2 both charge monthly subs and the others have optional subs that are only theoretically optional. Or they have pay to win options that are not acceptable.

Charging $50 for an expansion makes up for the fact that so many people don’t use the gem store. Including the original game which was sold for $10 anyway, and is now free with restrictions? That’s just simple business logic.

I don’t love every decision Anet makes, but I do understand they’re a business, and they need money to move forward.

Honestly, I’d get it. The quicker you can manage to get through the story of HoT, the more ready you’ll be when LS3 is released.

In what way would OP be more ready? The ‘story’ to date in GW2 is delivered in a very thin vignette sort of fashion that’s more driven by creating space for xbox achievements style gameplay over lore.

Most MMOs struggle with being able to deliver good story and GW2 is no different. It’s not for lack of trying, but that their primary goal is making a persistent game; a game that above all else exists to keep you logging on. Even if the game could deliver something on par or better than your favorite story in any medium, thats not enough to keep you logging in to play it over and over for months while you wait for the next chapter/installment. A story that is so thin it could be scripted on a napkin, roadblocked by grind and offers xbox achievements on the other hand will keep you coming back for weeks.

That’s just narrative design business in the world of MMOs.

Well good for you. But why talk to me like I’m subhuman? Do you think I’m the first person ever to not like something like this? You have a point—I’ll get used to it; I’ll either buy the expansion or I won’t. I just can’t figure out why some people think it’s necessary to “correct” me. As I said, you’re not my parent.

Why did I come back here? Every time I do someone has something snarky to say. Goodbye forums, I get enough of this garbage in real life, I really don’t need it online from people who obviously look on the forums just to be annoying.

Translation: don’t bother “correcting” me again, “Mom”. I’ll never see it.

Even though you’ll never see this, I’m going to post anyway. My advice to you is don’t post on a public forum and not expect a response from people who disagree with you. Because you’re bound to be disappointed.

On topic: I think everything said above makes sense from a practical point of view, but for a person who never bought the original game, it doesn’t apply anyway. If you don’t already own the core game, HoT is a steal.

If you want your character to be more powerful, or in the case of PvP be remotely competitive at all, you need to by the expansion. GW2 has done a lot of thing right, but the pay to win of the expansion wasn’t one of them.

In case you haven’t lost patience by this point, OP, here’s my take:

  • You won’t like sPvP right now, without HoT; you can play it, but you’ll be at a big disadvantage compared to other competitors.
  • You can play WvW just fine without HoT. I’m 99% certain you’d like it more with the new specializations, especially if you prefer roaming, as opposed to zerging.

will I miss out on a lot? I see there’s the Revenant profession and some profession specializations…

Yes, I think you’ll miss out on a lot.

Some veterans really don’t like the expansion, but I haven’t met many new players who feel the same (of course, how would I meet new players who hate it?) And I know a lot of vets who do enjoy it.

The stuff that is good is…really good. My favorites are:

  • Gliding — that’s game changing, especially for the original maps. Going back to non-gliding games is like going back to non-jumping games was when I got GW2 — I can’t do it.
  • Autolooting — another “mastery” eventually allows the game to pick up all loot from foes (including ground chests) — no more spamming [f].
  • The HoT story — I like it a lot better than Season 2 (for the most part; it has its own issues). It mostly progresses better, the combat (with two notable exceptions) is less tedious at worst and interesting at best, and it feels (to me) more like a story than S2 did.
  • The scenery. As amazing as I thought GW2 was when I first started playing, HoT zones are even more amazing. Plus, with gliding, you see more of the old zones than ever.
  • The professions — the new specializations are IMO overpowered compared to the original specs, but they are also a lot more fun (OP’d or not). Now, some of that is that they are brand new and I haven’t burnt out on them, but also the skills and interactions are more fun for me.

I’m guessing they’re both only included when you purchase HoT but are they only available after max level in the original GW2? Or does Revenant start at lvl 1 like the other professions?

You can start a revenant as soon as you apply your serial number, either at L1 or using tomes to insta L80. The new specs require an L80 toon who then has to unlock 250 more hero points (which sounds like a lot until you find out that you get 10 HP/challenge in the new zone, so it’s only 25 challenges for a new toon and somewhat less for those who did some map completion already).

<.<
One thing to note, if you’re running the core game on minimum graphics/settings, don’t buy HoT. Your computer won’t be able to handle it >.>

Well, it depends why they are minimum. I run it on minimum because their mac “client” is actually the PC client in a bad 32 bit wrapper with a memory leak.

If you want your character to be more powerful, or in the case of PvP be remotely competitive at all, you need to by the expansion. GW2 has done a lot of thing right, but the pay to win of the expansion wasn’t one of them.

I wouldn’t mind so much paying for the expansion, if only I could get the real game back. Some of the expansion was good (revenants, some masteries), but the story content is too hard to complete, which makes it useless to me. And, the dumbing down that occurred in central Tyria really hurts.

I bought it before reaching 80s to support ArenaNet.
This should not even a question when you have a job or income.

THANK YOU to those who were responding to my inquiry!
Honestly I cannot remember why I stopped playing, I think it’s because I was more invested in WOW.
But I’m not anymore, except I’m going to try Legion when it comes out for sure, and feel like I’ll be able to give this game another chance since I do remember having a lot of fun.

I just wonder how sPVP is now. I logged on and wow I was so LOST but I’m sure some youtube videos will tell me how things work now. I just hear bad things about queue times and people giving up games quickly… doesn’t sound too great.

Also, how is roaming in WPVP? Are there a lot of players so you don’t feel like you’re running for 20min to just have 1 fight and have to run all over again?

Just want everyone who sees this to know that Vayne & I worked this out. Vayne is actually very cool and took the time to explain things & even apologize, which I also did on another thread. A moderator removed that thread, but it’s okay, we’ll all live. Anyone else I offended, I’m sorry I let my anger get the better of me last week.

Picture this: You buy a season pass to a theme park, and afterward find out that they’re adding new stuff. You’re excited because you have a season pass. When you go to see the new stuff, they tell you that you can’t enter the new area until you pay for the season pass again.

That’s kind of what happened when GW2 went FTP, or in my opinion it did. I bought in, then the entry fee was moved to the new area, and anyone else who enters free but pays for the new area gets everything, while I’m stuck outside. The amount of the entry fee doesn’t matter; if you’ve paid, you’ve paid.

GW2 has always been a free-to-play game (or more accurately, a buy-to-play game which was free to play after you bought it). My thought was anyone who’d paid the entry fee, whether at the beginning or at HoT should get all current content so no one has to pay twice. Any succeeding expansions would, of course, have to be bought as normal. It’s just an opinion, and I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.

But hey, maybe one day they’ll have a $10 sale on HoT. If so, I might consider that insignificant enough to give up on my position & just buy it.

Like someone suggested, get 80 first. Make sure you explored all of Tyria first. Get your personal story done.

AND THEN, get HoT. I found that to complete specialization collections, you have to have 9 characters, each a different specialization. It takes a long time, even with 9 lvl 80s, to get all the HPs needed, get an HoT map completion, and get enough currency to do collections.

The biggest win for HoT was HoT masteries. Gliding is superb and auto-loot will change yo life. If you really care about quality of life in your gameplay, HoT is a must after you hit lvl 80 and did map completion. If you’re buying HoT for the collections, get SEVERAL lvl 80s before you buy. If you’re buying HoT for “new maps” and “new material”, wait till it goes on sale.

^^^ My 2 cents.

Well you should get to 80 first and finish gw 2 core game, then do the living story season 1 recap, then buy and complete season 2 and then get HoT.

If you do not care about the story them go straight from core to buying gw 2 but HoT is a direct continuation of ls 3.
