Q:
New Player..what class?
A:
I have played extremely complicated classes before this game in other MMOs (aka Warlock before Cata in WoW) So complication is not much of a handicapping factor for me…but I do like magic based classes
Then it seems like Mesmer is the class you might like.
You haven’t told us anythign about your playstyle, so I’m not sure what you’d like. I personally love my mesmer, I’m not sure I’d say that’s a great first profession. Leveling one is pretty tough, and a bit slow. You don’t kill as fast, certainly at lower levels.
I’d probably start with a guardian or a ranger, if just to get the feel of the game, even if you switch to mesmer as a main after you’ve gotten the game down. It really is different than a lot of MMOs out there.
You will get as many different opinions as there are Professions, lol. It is easy to try out each Profession and see which one suits your playstyle.
I prefer Ranger, but most hate it because it is considered unviable. It works for me, though. I have 9 characters, though, one of each Profession. Six of my characters are level 80, and one is used for farming keys.
Welcome to Tyria and good luck! =)
If you will play on EU server, chose Underworld and join Balthazar Order guild.
I will be on and we can discuss more about this but all depends on your play style. You have ranged and non ranged. If you like a melee dps,you can start with a warrior,if you like a more tanky class, chose guardian. If you like to attack fast but die fast, assassin “style”,thief is for you,do you prefer a sorcerer, you have elementalist,if you like archers with a pet, take ranger etc.
“We are now! We are forever!”
Welcome to Tyria
What class is best for you depends what gameplay suits you the most.
If you like melee combat with strong offense, good defense and offensive support you can’t go wrong with a warrior.
If you like melee but like more defensive support kind of gameplay go with a guardian.
If you like more fragile but great dps classes you can try Elementalist or Thief
Mesmers are a nicee support class with few very nice group support abilites and unique gameplay.
Rangers, Necros and Engeneers are nice to play solo but are not hugely popular in dungeons.
One thing you should know though, GW2 stongly favors melee range combat and ranged damage is very small in comparison.
Leave engineer till later. That way, when you are bored of the game, you can start one and it will teach you a whole new way to play the game.
Yeah, engineers are awesome.

Complication? Magic? Don’t mind being one shot by ambient creatures until you reach high exp?
Elementalist.
Mail me in game and i ll help around explaining classes a bit more in depth and whatever questions ya get
Ranger. Got 4 of them – what an amazing, however bugged, class.
The most interesting and complicated class (for me) is elementalist.
It’s the only class that you don’t need to spam #1 and you actually have to rotate through 20 skills.
Plus it has the most interesting combos (fire fields+might stacking), etc.
But you will have a hard time to master it, but i will tell you that you will enjoy playing an elementalist, cause its challenging.
I love ranger. Despite the bugs, one runs SB LB the other S/A and either bow. Both are great.
