It seems I am meant to choose a server when I first get into the game (just bought the game and it’s downloading as I type)

Which server in Europe should I join that is the best for new players at the moment? I’m not sure whether I would be more PvE or PvP at this moment but it would be nice to meet a lot of people who haven’t a clue like me. I also like servers with lots of people.

the server you pick only determines your team for world vs world now. with the release of megaserver technology, every map except world vs world is shared among all servers in EU. NA also has its own mega server.
So the only research you need to do to pick a server is regarding world vs world.

With the Megaserver technology the only thing your home world matters for is WvW. Some EU worlds have language designations and here’s the leaderboards for WvW that might help you make a decision.
