I am pretty new to GW2, but I have been playing MMOs for years. I think one more race and an accompanying profession would do the game a lot of good.

The race, mainly because I think there are too many humanoid races. Human(duh), Norn, and Sylvari are very human in the profile. All Asura have going for them are being short with big heads (as far as being drastically different in profile). Charr do a good job of offering something really different to play.

My vote would be for Tengu: they look different enough, and have a lot of mystery surrounding their current status in the world. I love the Kodan, and would love to role one, but again, they are too humanoid.

To go with Tengu and their seeming Japanese cultural inspirations, I would propose a class with heavy samurai influence. It could wear heavy armor, making the armor balance 3/3/3 like the developers seem to want.

+ New, permanent explorable zone(s)
+ Plenty of new traits/skills; new weapons
+ New dungeons

And I think this game could get a second life. Well, I’d definitely be satisfied.

Three 80-lvl Rangers. Why? ‘Cos they’re that cool.

Some people refuse to play humans/norn/sylvari, you know. I was drawn to this game because they actually tried to be different by creating the asura and charr, and the sylvari (even though humanoid) are still pretty cool too. And I still haven’t gotten far in GW1 because I have to play another stinky human. Also, this game should have a new race before a new class, simply because balance issues. I vote for Tengu because they are the most creative concept of the unplayable races and are already set up to potentially be playable. From the concept art I’ve seen they look very colorful, they might even put sylvari colors to shame. And a samurai class to go with would be neat, but it’s probably best to save a new class for later.

I’m only here because sometimes I just like to watch things burn.

Tengu are too much of a ‘beige’ race, a bit like Quaggans, only not quite so annoying.
Skritt, on the other hand, already show a reasonable integration with the current races, their own city which, unlike the Tengu, is mostly accessible and some degree of pre-established class system; thieves, bottle lobbers (engies) etc.
Skritt please – at the end of the day it’s all about the ‘shinies’.

Tengu are so ripe for the picking, though. They’re just at the border of consciousness for the players, their “zone” is under guard but in an obvious hole in the map, and they’re actually intelligent.

(As much as I would love to see a racial Signet of the Skritt that gives stats based on how many players are around…)

Problem is the Tengu culture is likely to be some faux-Asia rip. Exotic, but it’s been done to death in other places.

Kodan have an interesting belief system, but I have to wonder if it’s best left at arm’s length and not have us mucking around personal story into it.

I would love a new race, I really would. but consider why we have no voice-overs for our character in the living world: Because each line needs voiced for each language, gender, and race. currently, that’s something like 6 × 2 × 5 = 60. (English, German, French, Korean, Chinese, Spanish(?)).

One line requires 60 voice acting clips, meaning up to 60 voice actors. Another race would add 12 more tracks for a total of 72.

Now consider how much effort goes into the personal story; the instances, the dialogue, the writing, etc.
Consider the amount of other content they could make to add to their existing world in place of that new branching personal story for the new race.

Finally, I’m sure you are all familiar with how we can’t get new chest/leg skins unless they are in the cash shop; this is because 6 skins are needed for each (technically 10, but norn/human/sylvari are very minor reworks of the same skin, and require little work). Because of this, it is too expensive for them to add new chest/leg armor outside the cash shop 95% of the time. Adding a new non-human-like race would not only mean converting all the existing skins (well over 100 sets. If that’s just 1 new set they could have made per 10 converted sets, we are loosing out on over 10 full new sets of armor for everyone else). It would also mean we would get even fewer new armor sets.

Basically, unless adding a new race is going to (by itself) increase their playerbase/cash shop usage by at least 20%, A new race will hurt the game as a whole.

Not saying I wouldn’t love a new race; I VERY much would! I have been pining over playing a Tengu since the game’s first week, watching, hoping, praying they will one day be released. But I do not want a race yet, and if there is one, I want it to be cash shop unlocked. Because otherwise, it will steal already scarce resources from 90% of players.

I want a new race as part of a paid mini-expansion. Not because I don’t like money or because I don’t want them free, nor because I have lots of money (because I don’t). I want them as a paid add-on so Anet can hire the extra staff needed to build and sustain a new race without stealing from their existing game’s development.

Tengu share pretty much the same body type as Charr. And it will end like Charr. Players want to play a Tengu, they’ll see how terrible their armor doesn’t fit it (even the culturals) and players will be back to their old races.

For people who played the first Guild Wars, Hylek and Tengu are pretty awesome. However, tengu in this game, share a model with charr, they’re just not nearly as bulky, so I don’t think the armor is that much of an issue. I think the biggest issue is languages and voices.
and lightyears, humans are always the most popular race in any video game, it’s boring and vanilla, but it’s always the case, and that infographic doesn’t really show much of anything as there are no numbers involved.

EDIT: also, that shows rangers as the second most popular profession, yeah, that’s a great picture you have there.

Eeew Hylek… xD We should export them to France to give them a reason.

I’d be in for Largos if there was a new race.

I don’t like playing a boring human, nor a norn. Asura ar all right but to small for my taste. I hate not being able to see other’s names or more than the knees of a norn. Nyeh… Charr… Well… Whoever likes them shall do so. Some Charr NPCs are quite cool but still… To me, human/animal mixtures, creatures or whatever are VERY STRANGE. I’m very strict if it comes to furries or anything that comes near to that term, and Charr are. I’d never condider playing something like that, and I’d never do so with Kodan or some eagleheads.

Yes, Largos are humanoid too, but they seem very intresting too. They could even have a whole realm unterwater, a whole starting area that’s mostly underwater, some reagions that finally gives the abillity to fight underwater some sense. I mean… there is ONE fractal that is under water, ONE dungeon path that is partially under water. A few hearts that are, and off course the underwater killer daily… Pretty much too less for such a great feature imho.

Adding all of this together, I only play Sylvari. Sylvari were the reason I actually considered playing GW2, and I got totally tied to it during the beta. (In fact I’ve been greatly dissappointed that I HAD to play a human in the first beta) They are unique, and I LOVE plant themed creatures. <3 (No I’m not from GREENPEACE xD) I even wish there was more racial clothings (for all races)

To sum it up: I still think Tengu are the most likely race to ever make it into the game. There’s a gate in Caledon Forest, and another one in Lion’s Arch. They clearly lead to the realms of the wind (or however it is called) and there’s a huuuge place on the map, where the starting area could go, and right south of it there’d be enough space for a city too. Plus, the Tengu are often mentioned, you see them ingame, you can intract with some, and there’s still the statement that they’ll show up and interact with the rest of Tyria if they see the time is right for them to do so…

I’ve been waiting for Tengu to join us for so long. Such an awesome race with loads of creative potential. I’d love to see all the different creation options we’d be able to do for them (beak/tusk style, feathering on head/body, etc.).

I’d also enjoy centaurs as well, as there are so few games that actually have them as playable races. Centaur character creation would be a lot of fun, I’d bet. Yeah, I know their chances are nil, but I can still dream.

Anyways, here’s hoping for Tengu!

Forget anything that is a studyable race in the LS. Thats Ogres, Skritt, Hylek, Grawl, Quaggans.
Forget any of the antagonist races/factions. That would be Centaurs (plus, how would they swim?), Nightmare Court, Flame Legion, Inquest, Svanir.
Largos are out as, according to the personal story, they are incredibly rare and avoid contact with all other races if at all possible. It would be as stupid as the Miqo’te in FF14 ARR – they’re supposedly rare and solitary creatures yet the designers make them in such a way that EVERYONE who faps to nekomimi will roll one.
What does this leave us? Kodan, Tengu, Ettin and a handful of others which have groups who are non-antagonistic. Kodan is out right away, they are Norn-based. Tengu are possible but require a very specific armour redesign and we can see what a mess Anet made of Charr armour. Ettin would be fun, but they don’t wear clothes so we can forget them.
Personally, I want to see playable Ooze, but I know it’ll never happen.

I think the races we do have are fine and I’d rather instead customisation pack for the races we do have (New hair, faces, colours, beards and body types) all in one go. Frankly what I’d want most is a new class to play, it’d take a lot less personal story integration and more game-play options.

The game status is fairly ok without new race/profession.
However, I think it is more essentiasl for Anet to work on armor skin system of non-human like races such as Charr and Asura.
Charr has unfairly ugly armor across all professions/armor types, Asura is adorable of course, yet only present several pieces of the armor.
It’s gonna be less and less balance within more and more armor skin on sale, this would only make players create more and more Human-like characters because they look good on most armors.

Grind, grind and more grind.

I vote for kodan, you can’t beat the power of polar bear

Kodan! Sure they’re a little more humanoid than Charr or Tengu but who cares.

Make it happen, ANet.

As for topics on Tengu and a mention of Mursaat:

Tengu’s the most likely new playable race, although I’m not a fan of them. Their culture and everything is cool but I’m just not a fan of bird people.

Mursaat, I pray, will never be a playable race. There is absolutely no reason to kittenize the lore like that. I’m already slightly disappointed about Charr’s semi-180 in regards to their place in GW1 and their place in GW2. As a race that fanatically tried to invade Ascalon, Kryta and Orr the masses sure don’t seem to have any issue with people living in other places (Ebonhawke, for instance). Obviously there’s the Gold Legion and everything but that’s a different story. Anyway, yeah, I hope Mursaat are never true.

I’ve also fancied the idea of The Ancient being a playable race – but I am more inclined to believe that Palawa Joko, even when threatened by Kralkatorrik, is more likely to be an enemy than an ally. So there’s not much chance in The Ancient being a playable race at any point.

The one race I wish they’d find a way to reintroduce though would be dwarves. I don’t know how they’d do it, since they’re all made of stone and stuff, but dwarves are a classic. (inb4 “we don’t want no WoW clone”)

I’m for the Tengu or the Kodan, but the Kodan have no home city.

To be honest, I’m mostly hoping to play a race I’ve never seen before in GW2…. Maybe opening up the desert area, or maguma wastes, introducing a new race or two in there?

Yeah this is a topic that comes up a lot in the forums

Im also on board for Tengu to be playable
heck I’ve wanted to play as one since Guildwars 1

I’ve heard multiple times that in the original builds of Gw2 Tengu were originally planned as a race but eventually they were replaced with the Sylvari

they have a home instance located in the Sea of Sorrows called the Dominion of Winds which is connected to Lions arch and Caledon Forest (which would act as thier lvl 1 zone most probably)

the problem is from a Lore perspective the Tengu are fiercely Nationalistic and they do not trust the other races of Tyria at all
but they do trade with us while at the same time study us
it is known that they also have ancient information about the Elder Dragons but this Information is not known to the rest of the world so it is very likely that the Living story will focus on the Tengu at some point

this all falls into place that if they are to become a playable race it will be tied in with the Living story in the future
it is possible that the Dominion of Winds will become a playable area eventually and the Tengu will become involved with the battle against the Elder Dragons at some point
the whole point of the Gw2 Story is the coming together of all the Races to fight a common enemy (The Elder Dragons)
this includes all the advanced Races of Tyria along with the minor Races like Quaggen, Skrit, Hylek etc
The Tengu are a advanced race as are the Kodan who will also possibly have a part to play in the future of Gw2 (Jormag chaptor most likely) and maybe the Stone Dwarfs too when the Primordus chaptor comes along

Granted this is all entirely speculation on my part and this does not promise any more playable races

although I am all for Adding Tengu, Kodan and even Stone Dwarf as playable races when their respective Story arcs become the focus of the current storyline if they do it that way

but honestly though nobody knows what Anet are doing so all we can do is speculate and come up with our own theories etc about what is possibly going to happen in the future of this game
then again that’s part of the fun huh ^^
and we were right about Mordemoth to some degree hehe
